Richmond vs St Kilda - Game Day Thread

Not worried about that. Not saying they will but if they want to leave then we get overs compensation. Trade hard. No more nice guy at trade week stuff. Melbourne was a basket case so it took them longer than it should have but look at them now with all of those top end draft picks. If players want to leave fine but let’s get great compensator them.
You can add Carlton and Brisbane to that as well , looked hopeless at the bottom of the ladder , now strong lists

Yeah but we need to start selecting bona fide midfielders. We have been absolutely destroyed in the midfield 2 out of 3 games.

With what?

Picks 12-18 in a single draft?

The guns are gone by then.

Our dynasty was built on Dusty, Cotch, Prestia, Riewoldt, Rance, Vlaustin and Edwards.

But it took 3-4 years to get that group together, and a few more to develop as well as astute trading.

Theres no quick fix, hard yards need to be done. And that means pain for all of us.

Another thing we have lost in spades is toughness and roughness. We no longer tackle with intent. We no longer tackle to hurt.
Yeah I can't believe how bad we've become in that area, and it's acceptable to know that we get obvious frees against us in the way we do it.

Aside from Sonsie who looks like quality, we have no other midfield options. Stack maybe, but will he ever get to that level of fitness.

RCD is likely a bust (too slow/no running tank), Ross isn’t even being tried in the middle, and what else do we have except ageing or missing warriors?

When the VFL team get flogged by 10 goals, there’s little to get excited about.

Agree. But we need to start seriously focusing on the midfield. We did not do that last draft. Needs to start this year.

Seems to me Graham has dodged a lot of criticism today. Is a 23 year old running around like a 40 year old making terrible decision after terrible decision

How did Stack go today?

It won't take a lot for us to rebound, if we have to take a step back for a year or 2, I think that might be the option we need to take.

Trade Norths 2nd for Tanner Bruhn, then get into Hoppers ear as a FA in 2023. Our midfield can be replenished over the next 2 years, with Sonsie coming in, Dow has certainly shown he can plat the game. We can rebuild on the run, with bookends locked in for the next 10 years in Balta and Gibcus, we can focus on other areas, and that has to be the midfield over the next 2 years at least.

Club seemed to know we had to draft for the future. Gibcus is a futures pick.

The rebuild has already begun.

Give Cotch, Titch and Jack their victory lap.

Free up cap space. Go hard into the draft.

Develop Ryan and Mate. We’re on the way.

Should have traded him to Carltoon. We could be sitting back now eating that bag of chips.

You take Bont & McRae or Petracca & Oliver out of the best midfields in the AFL and they will struyggle too. Dusty/Prestia are our 2 best mids, no team can win consisitently without their 2 best mids.

The issue is we are unlikely to get enough games from our best 22 to contend

I think we all know anyway, or should know, that this will be Cotch's, Shane's and Jack's last year.

I'm not calling for it and I dont want to - they are legends. Fairly obvious from their own words anyway, they know they are done. Even last year Cotch knew - he's taking the cash this year, and fair enough.

Jack is on the record pretty much and Cotch handing over the captaincy, he's def retiring of his own accord. So we shouldnt call it out, the boys know.
Shane has surprised me a bit, he was pretty good in the pre season games. I'd play him 70% forward, he only needs 10-15 possies and he'd be creative. But we cant b/c we dont have enough mid rotations.

1. Dylan should not have played. Another bad MC decision. Same MC who got an F for playing Graham in R1. Same MC who got numerous F's last year.
2. Balta is still a more natural backman than forward.
3. The forward line coach is an F - and Lynch needs to be talked to as well.
4. The mid coach is an F.
5. As bad as this now is, may as well play RCD - could he be any worse than Ross? I dont rate RCD at all, but gee we need to see over 4-5 games - Ross has had a lot of chances too.
6. If we must play aarts, keep him deep forward and I'd play Cumberland in the FL to add some energy , mongrel and power - we have no energy in the FL at all, none.

I'm no coach. What do I know.
But I will calmly state based on what is coming to be 18 months of data that our current coaches collectively are in la la land.

The other thing here is tactics.

Stand and 666 have killed us. We can’t stop momentum anymore.

We can’t win on turnover alone. We need other avenues to goal and they may not come until the list rebuild has gathered pace.

1. Yes.
2. I though this, but no. Been great up forward despite our largely threadbare midfield and poor delivery.
3. Yes.
4. Yes.
5. RCD will probably get a game soon, but I doubt he's the panacea.
6. Aarts should be playing park football.

What a mess.

Obvious move was Balta down back. Instead we crucified a third gamer on opposition key forward. Disgraceful coaching.

Then we play Balta in the ruck when we already have two ruckman. No creativity to change midfield mix, ball pinging out of our forward 50 time & again, backline wilted, game over.

Real issue is midfield. Edwards is done, Cotchin can only play 2-3 quarters and rest either too slow or not good enough. Can’t solely be pinned on Martin & Prestia not playing.
Moving Balta would have made little difference. The rot had already set in around the ground. The pressure had flipped. I personally prefer we admit we now need to rebuild and play Balta where we plan on playing him longer-term.
