Richmond Vs GWS - Game Day Thread

It wasn't a fancy win, but it wasn't cheap either. It was won by our players running hard both ways, all day.

Yep he played well and he would want to have.

We had all the momentum in the game and he turned it their way with a combination of careless stupidity and ill-discipline.

After the same stuff cost us the game last week, for a leader to produce that again today is absolutely unacceptable.
The 50 cotch gave away was for a late tackle. Last week all the 50s were for back chat, Manning the mark incorrectly. Cotch was good today. In the contest getting kicks to targets inside our 50. The whole combo in there worked well. Even Dow who I aren't a fan of. Edwards still under performing. Good to see Lynch throw his weight around again

Have to say our fwd line looks much better without Jack now. Really should have pulled the oin last year.
Cotch wound back the clock. Legs still slow but was immense in the contest.
Finally gave Bolton centre bounce duties and we improved massively in that area. Could quick become our best player especially in Dustys absence.
Soldo needs to be at centre bounces as much as possible. We look a different unit with him taking the ruck. He either taps to our advantage or doesnt allow the opposition to swoop it out. Was massive in that area and much better than Nank. Nank excels around the ground so this is a good combo.
Gibcus going to be an absolute star. Still happy for him to play some vfl this year but he will be another freak. We are talking about a serious player here.
Dow needs to keep playing every week. His hands are elite and will only get better. Exactly what we need in the team atm.

Ross just doesnt have it. Sorry. Time to put a line through him.
George needs to be upgraded. Dont care what pressure he supposedly applies. His ball handling at critical times is just not good enough for the way the game is played now. Parker can fill that role now and seems cleaner with ball in hands.
Aarts has no place in the senior team. Not as a sub not as an emergency.

Miller did his job didn't look out of place I like in the backline.

Dow, Ralph, Gibbo and Miller games all a big highlight of today. Gibbo is Hollywood, has star written all over him. Ralph took a step forward, Dow gave us something in the guts, and Miller did his job, looked strong and had a few good moments. Pretty rapt.

Sensational win lads. Second tier backline was magnificent.

Leadership shown by Cotch and Broady was first class.
That's a cop out. When he whacks a player in the arm he takes the risk that a 50 will be paid. Eliminate the action, eliminate the 50.

If he had given away the first 50 and headed to the mark without doing anything else then there is no second 50. Instead he let his ego get in the way and engaged with the opposition.

Control what you can control. Don't do it, no 50.
TBR, did you think the interpretation of umpire abuse had changed between Round 1 and Round 2?

Both teams were spent at the last quarter.
Might explain why we died last week.
Carltoon were just more fit

I've only seen a couple of games this round but regardless I think that's a hard question to answer without being privvy to what is actually being said on the ground.

What I think does happen and is happening is myths become reality with umpiring. Good example was last week when people kept posting in other games that players were moving on the mark, with the inference that we were held to another standard. The reality was I don't think we had one single 50 metre paid against us for moving on the mark either.

In this instance someone sees random player talk to umpire and says they are letting that go when they penalised us. Yet Dustin gave the arms a wave around and spoke to the umpire very early in our game last week and no 50, so it's not true to say there hasn't been some wiggle room all along. As I say, we don't know what was said.

The one thing I am certain about is there has been a noticeable decline in the animation of players spraying umpires over the first two rounds which can only be a good thing.
Yeah mate, excellent points.

Its just frustrating for fans (and must be for umpires too) to see some rules implemented one week and not the next.

It looked at stages that we had taken the Bulldogs approach today of standing off the mark and continuing to move.

Regardless, actions by players in this round were NOT paid 50, that were last week. It's not good enough

Agree. Check the running stats and sprint stats. Works his guts out and rarely turned over today aside from this shocker that was frustrating
C’mon Craig he has been pretty good other than a few errors. Definitely playing better there than forward the past 2 years.

That was a good solid win. We looked to be putting a lot more pressure in in the middle. Even when GWS got clearances they were more often under pressure. You saw the importance of that when GWS kicked a couple of quick goals from centre clearances, must have been second or third quarter.

A few good signs from young players. I spent half the day trying to work out who was in the middle, bit hard to see from behind the goals. Sounds like Ross was a bust, can't say I noticed him much. Noticed a fair bit of Ralphsmith, he seemed to provide a fair bit of run out of the backline. If Dow was in the middle then keep him there, we were much better in clearances today. Gibcus continues to impress, clearly needs to get a bit bigger and may well need a break at times, but gee he does look good.

The defence was very good. I looked at the scoring percentage from inside 50 entries at quarter time and we were scoring (admittedly behinds) over 50% of the times we went inside 50, GWS were on 15% which is truly terrible. Some good spoiling by the defenders which was quite effective.

That Cotchin 50 I think is an issue. I reckon Cotchin was going to spoil the ball, so there was no malice. But, he was late and clearly hit the GWS player in the face. So, a penalty, yes, but I still reckon 50 metres is too much for a non-deliberate incident. As for the second 50, no way, Cotchin was running to the mark after the 50 was given, the GWS player clearly and deliberately impeded his progress. You do the right thing and run to the spot where the mark is going to be after the 50m penalty and an opposition player deliberately gets in your path, that simply should not be another 50. I will add that a quarter later a Richmond player got a late whack after taking a mark, but no 50 - was a little less late but still not seeing consistency.

I will actually compliment the umps on a few free kicks given to forwards who were getting held when setting up for a marking contest. Not sure, as I haven't looked at other games, but more of this please. I don't care who they play for, holding forwards as the ball comes in has been rife for years. If they actually enforce the rules on this it will be much better for the game.

As for the free kick count, always a bit of a mystery with GWS as they get reamed by the umps regularly too, never so worried when we play them.

Liked Miller's game. He was composed.
Dow, Gibcus, Hugo and Balta.
Great bunch.
Our outs were a blessing in disguise.
Balta is a freak.
Could be anything.
Hate to say it but fwd line functioned better without Jack.
When back hope he plays a high half fwd flank. A Stevie J type role.
Cotch was imperious.
Rioli will be a gun by end of year of half back. Rarely wastes it.
Pickett would be leading JDM at this stage.
Another great game.
