Rich V Melb - Saturday, March 4, 4.10pm AEDT, Casey Fields

But

We were made to look second rate today. It had a feel of 2022.

Happy to wait till Round 7 before making solid assessments but today made me uneasy.
our pressure was down. No doubt it will dial up for the real stuff. But we are a very different mix to our great pressure teams - Jack Graham helps in this area as does Marlion

It happens all the time.
Kelly goes to WC they go backwards.
Franklin goes to Sydney they lose 2 GFs with him.
Getting new players is beautiful like in 17 With Prestia Nakas and Caddy but they were added on top of brand new in there prime Cotchin Grimes Martin BigV etc it worked. But this year we have added to great players but we haven't got a group of that same level coming through at the same time.
It dosent help when your 1st rounders have been disasters since 17.
Please get out of pops wine rack.

Sorry if you’ve already addressed this as I haven’t read the whole thread. Just wondering, in your experience in club land, how these pre season games are handled? Are players told to take it easy and make sure they come out unscathed? Is it a chance to muck around with things? Or is it treated more like a dress rehearsal for the real thing?

No-one is ever told explicitly to take it easy but the focus is completely different to a premiership game so it's essentially implied.

For example a key focus of the preseason game will be how many minutes you are playing. In a real game you will run rotations around the game, so if the ball is stuck and you can't get off you would keep going, in a preseason game you would just head to the bench regardless.

Sides will also hold back on structural things, basically run a cut down version of aspects like kick-ins, stoppages etc....They have already run these things at training and in club scratches so the work is done there.

The build-up is nothing like a real game either, there's essentially no opposition focus compared to usual, it's all about what the team needs to achieve in terms of preparation, normally it would be at least 70/30 the other way.

The intensity before and during is way down from everyone, often the assistants are coaching, there's more intervention from the conditioning team and there's an unquestionably different attitude from the players in terms of preservation vs intensity. The exception is young guys trying to break the side which is why you often see someone stand out like that (Hello Samson Ryan).

In summary, it's nothing like a premiership game in nearly every way.

Interestingly we won the clearance stats 33 32. Taranto and Hopper were good for 14. Last time we played them we lost it 37 28. Considering their big man domination and inside "brutes" mentioned above it's something positive that we can work to exploit to see more pigskin through the big sticks. We'll need to get used to some new setups and game plan tweaks to fully cash in on this potential new strength. It won't happen over night but it will happen!

Yeah we were much better in the clearances but absolutely slaughtered in transition. The ease in which they took the ball from D50 to F50 was the biggest concern out of today. That was a problem last year too and todays showing didn’t exactly fill me with confidence.

Not watching the game just saw the scores and stats.

Tigers look like they hardly had the footy and only 2 missed shots at goal out of 3 behinds.

Casey Field is a horrid place to play footy always blowing a gale, is that the case today or are the Dees simply beating us up.
I was there Craigo…no wind at all. Dees absolutely dominated us today. We did miss a lot off easy goals but the Dees are the real deal. There drafting has been second to none.

Yeah, about 75% of our guys were going at about 75% intensity. A really good hit out nonetheless.

The Dees are definitely my pick for the flag. They have the best list by a mile.

I was there too, I coulda sworn there was a wind blowing to the Frankston Cranbourne rd end left hand pocket. Many kicks blew left at that end.

I thought Gorn was huge today, what a player.
They have had a good recent run with injuries to key players like Petracca, Gawn, Oliver, Brayshaw and now even May and Lever. In a sweet spot and they fluffed it last year, like us in 2018

What was the reaction like on here March 2020?
How'd the season shape up by September 2020, asking for a friend?

View attachment 18293

Also the next week we lost to the Giants, so 2020 pre-season we went 0-2 for pre-season:unsure:

In 2017, pre-season anyone remember we we were down 45 to the Pies in the 3rd quarter in March of that year and I remember Pies fans messaging me how bad we were going to be that season, our season was done and dusted in March :bash We came back in the second half and lost by 7, but the reviews were not great none the less.

That's 2017 & 2020 pre-season for you

Not too sure how to get the stats for pressure acts and if anybody has them would be a good indication of how much they were down compared to our usual numbers but just didnt look like a " Richmond Game" as Dimma calls it

One thing about these practice games is i believe very little work goes into restricting the opposition and more about what we are trying to do and refine what has been worked on in the pre season and no value is given to winning or losing but more the amount of minutes each player gets and positions they play and ball movement (which was not great)

What i hated was how easily our foward line was to get the ball out of and how easy it was for melbourne players to spot their fowards on a lead or in space.

We need to tighten up our defensive game for round 1 as well as our transitioning and select better options

I said a couple of times the last week that we’d possibly get a touch up - and we did. I’ve watched Melbourne training a couple of times the last 5 weeks and they are running on top of the ground right now. But I also said I wouldn’t worry too much about it. And I won’t.

However, you’re kidding yourself if you didn’t see a few areas of issue. One is that we can’t play Chimp, Dusty, Lynch, Cumbo and Riewoldt in the forward line together. It’s way too slow and the defensive pressure is way too low as well. If we didn’t mark it, the ball just walked out of our forward line with absurd ease today.

5 tackles in our forward 50 is downright pathetic. This happened a few times last year and it’s gotta change.

We need to re think the forward line structure and roles of a few guys.
