Rich V Melb - Saturday, March 4, 4.10pm AEDT, Casey Fields

Bit of a reality check playing a very good side….Not the worst (nor best) result heading into round 1 IMO.
I think both teams agreed to play each other. Just hope we learn from this coz I still see our deficiencies against them.

It was only a practice match, but Melbourne were several classes above us today. Their transitional run and pressure were way above our level.

It is too early to pass judgement but we looked a mile off the pace. There have been a lot of players with interrupted pre seasons. Melbourne made us look really slow today and just outrun us time and again.

We have a very tough first six rounds and we need to be able to stay in the hunt.

I hope we don't stick with Cotch up forward. We need to use him as a change mid like the Cats did with Selwood last year.

Samson Ryan great last qtr kicking may be off but he’s been getting plenty of possessions
Definitely put his hand up as extra tall in forward line
Samson apparently dominated in the ruck in the VFL warm up game which is also a good sign :

Richmond came back firing in the third term however, kick-started by a Mansell major before Samson Ryan got in on the action with one himself.

Twenty-two-year-old Ryan was dominant in the ruck throughout the game and followed up well at ground level.

Who also might eventually want to go to Geelong :mhihi
They rolled us.
We gave up our 1st rounder for them to get Holmes who was BOG against us in the 1st half Last year and we tried to stooge them by picking up Brown. He looks like he isn't even a top 18 in our VFL side.
We are missing those years from 17-21 1st rounders.
If we just had 2 coming into there 50th game now, we would be well on the way to challenging again.
Brisbane get Ashcroft for free. Throw in Sydney's Academy kids like Gulden & Mills.
Collingwood sign up Dacios
Footscary finish top 4 and get Ugle Hangen for free.
It's bullshitt

I loved sampsons warm up for the last qtr:

Clanger belting his ears at high speed.

I reckon weve got a player here

Funny. Looked like a boxer preparing to get in the ring. Why was it needed?

What was the reaction like on here March 2020?
How'd the season shape up by September 2020, asking for a friend?

Only watch the first three quarters but some cold showers are needed (and I'm not talking about the usual rubbish about umpires).

These games are about conditioning and rehearsal. They have almost no relevance to the season. Big time players don't get much of a scent in the nostrils from a practice match at Casey.

Yes our forward entries and efficiency was deplorable today but Lynch is playing on almost zero preparation and Riewoldt is a pensioner. If you expected them to be moving around dynamically today you were always going to be disappointed.

Our preparation has been average at best and we are going to have a lot of plugging up to do when the real stuff starts, but wait until you see that before making any sort of assessment about where we are at.
Sorry if you’ve already addressed this as I haven’t read the whole thread. Just wondering, in your experience in club land, how these pre season games are handled? Are players told to take it easy and make sure they come out unscathed? Is it a chance to muck around with things? Or is it treated more like a dress rehearsal for the real thing?

Get the aggression up I think.

Enjoyed him clunking marks and covering ground.

Thompson Dow was a nice surprise too.

We looked pretty crap though. Let’s hope form rather than sentiment governs our selections this year.

Our general foot skills and kicking for goal is deplorable.
Melbourne made us look third rate. Practice match or no practice match

Lotta chicken littles in this thread.

After we belt Carlton, we'll end up with 10 wins by the bye, setting us up for a comfortable top four finish.

Another premiership coming up.

Hi
@Dont Argue , this was my reply to your question as who my Smokie's were for this season:

"I've been on Tylar Young all pre season and he has only started to get press now.
Yes Juddy a smokey even for round 1".

(both it now seems are better than a smokie's chance for round 1 :) ).

Let's hope both have decent games against the Dee's.

Agree with you as to the possibility these two offer.
Hope they both still play against Carlton, but it is not so clear.

Despite the posh man view, the ability or other that Tarrant now offers is a different question altogether. Maybe it might have been a different story for him some years back, but don’t see him now being a part of a finals winning defence.

Ryan played well. If he comes in and Miller has to go back, that forward line with both Jack and Ryan looks far too slow.

How the *** was that a block ????

Geezuz they hate us.
That was crap. And then Petracca did exactly the same thing in the last qtr. No free. And end up a goal to Melb.

Jack Reiwoldt man-handled, no free. Ball goes straight down other end, Ben Brown free. Commentators praise the 4 umpire system picking up frees to forwards. No mention of the identical situation at the other end not a minute prior.

We do some dumb things but jeez we get the raw end of the stick.

Comparison between Jack's free (commentators hinted a dive) and Brown's free (clear dive but they said nothing) was hilarious.

I actually think Ryan could be the perfect replacement for Lynch. Not sure we can play both at the same time though
With what i seen today and 4 umpires and they way you couldnt touch the fowards then they can both play together
i would go even further and play Miller and Ryan in the same side along with 1 of nankervis or Soldo but not both

Miller & Ryan offer foward options where as nank/Soldo dont and with the extra bench spot then that allows the 3 giant foward option at times during the game.

Lynch / Ryan / Jack / Miller provides good foward and Ruck options and miller also the extra insurance in defence

‘It’s only a practice game’ is a sage observation, with history proving the concept time and again.

But

We were made to look second rate today. It had a feel of 2022.

Happy to wait till Round 7 before making solid assessments but today made me uneasy.

Melbourne’s structure is based around dominant talls and inside brutes. Key backs, key forwards, dominant rucks working up and down the ground.

We couldn’t handle any of them to be honest. Balta and Grimes look shaky as *smile*. Lynch underdone, Jack just done. I think Nankervis has been cooked for a couple of years now. Soldo bereft of confidence.

A well drilled side with good marking talls could be our kryptonite.
