Rich V Melb - Saturday, March 4, 4.10pm AEDT, Casey Fields

Yeah we were much better in the clearances but absolutely slaughtered in transition. The ease in which they took the ball from D50 to F50 was the biggest concern out of today. That was a problem last year too and todays showing didn’t exactly fill me with confidence.
Absolutely. Last week I was asking if Truck was involved with team defensive structures too. North was slingshotting like champs. Needs heaps of work hopefully better intensity will help.

Speaking to an ex AFL player tonight. He basically said those who are walk up starts treat practice games as a chance to get some run in the legs. Care factor is little. More emphasis is made by the fringe players trying to break into the team.

One is that we can’t play Chimp, Dusty, Lynch, Cumbo and Riewoldt in the forward line together. It’s way too slow and the defensive pressure is way too low as well. If we didn’t mark it, the ball just walked out of our forward line with absurd ease today.

5 tackles in our forward 50 is downright pathetic. This happened a few times last year and it’s gotta change.

We need to re think the forward line structure and roles of a few guys

The forward line was my biggest concern.

Seeing Jack, Cotch, Dusty and Cotch walking to their positions together looks scary for the oppo. But in reality its too.many old blokes.

I think we will see Trent and Dusty play more on the ball and less forward for the reason you identify

Damn that was an ordinary game yesterday, thank *smile* it's only early March n not September.

Not sure what to make of it as yet because it's only practice matching but Smelbourne looked very tidy on the run n spread with some seriously polished ball use under minimal pressure to team mates constantly in space.
Looking like we are going to play most of our footy tight short n scrambling under pressure again this year, got a lot of tidying up to do if that's still gunna be our main game.

At least all the *smile* pretend stuff is done now. Bring on Carlscum n season 2023.

I said a couple of times the last week that we’d possibly get a touch up - and we did. I’ve watched Melbourne training a couple of times the last 5 weeks and they are running on top of the ground right now. But I also said I wouldn’t worry too much about it. And I won’t.
Strange Melbourne would chose to peak early again. After round 10 last year they were 10-0 before dropping 6 of their last 12 games and limping into September. I know May’s antics played a part but they clearly peaked too early and ran out of puff by seasons end. For reference, Carlton were 8-2 and Geelong were 6-4!

It’s an extremely long and taxing season and timing your run is so important. For all our issues (and there are plenty of them) we have a lot of scope for improvement. Where is Melbourne’s improvement going to come from?

This. On the money. Dees want to be in top form for the start of the season, we don’t, we have stated we want a slow build. Differing philosophies.

Incidentally maybe we should remove all the team’s appendixes after Bakes came back firing with a BOG performance a fortnight after having his removed?

Practice matches aren't much of a gauge but we were no doubt outplayed. The Dees sharper in most respects.

I'd have liked to see Cotch have more of the footy with the forward experiment.
He's slimmed down quite a bit for the role so his impact in the middle will be reduced if it doesn't work..

Ryan looks more of a threat than JR too at this stage. Has really taken a step forward.

Young was ok but I am worried about how we'll manage the tall timber this year.
Balta is very inconsistent. Grimesy another year older. Tarrant injured.

Our midfield looked a bit slow yesterday & got carved up.
Very hot day. Let's see how we're trekking in June.

Yeah as good as TT and JH are - they aren’t quick. Yesterday showed we probably need Bolton in the midfield more often than not. Need his speed and evasiveness around the ball.

Notwithstanding the result, lowlight for me was the shithouse Foxtel/Kayo commentary.
Nick Del Santo & Gerard Healy, christ almighty, they're dullards.

folks have mentioned our forward line and I think we'll nut that puzzle out.

what worried me about yesterday was the continued flakiness of the back six / seven. they just haven't looked great since 2020.

I thought Gorn was huge today, what a player.
They have had a good recent run with injuries to key players like Petracca, Gawn, Oliver, Brayshaw and now even May and Lever. In a sweet spot and they fluffed it last year, like us in 2018
Yeah they’re going hard way too early
Just like last year

Juddy Clarke gave me a big smile with a couple of super classy moments.

can't wait to watch him develop this year. probably my favorite young player at this point.

Bolton ended up having 20 centre bounce attendances, which was equal second for us. He was pretty quiet yesterday, only way is up for Shai!

Cotchin = Super-sub. Think Townsend lining up a tackle...
Jack gone? Cumberland and Ryan would need to learn to kick straight first. One kick and goal still beats a full Castagna.
Dees talls have our measure which means we have to be better on the ground and in the centre. Can't see it happening all things being even. They will be a very hard side to match up on. Honestly don't know how they are fitting inside their salary cap.

The only thing I look out for in practice matches is injuries, so I am pretty happy, however we looked very slow.

I will wait till after round 6 to make a judgment on how the season will pan out.

Must admit that after the 1st quarter which was a disaster, we did compete OK for the remaining sessions.
There was not a big difference in the scoring after those 3 quarters.
What I would like to know is what was our game plan?
It seemed to me that we were on the defensive all the time.
If there was a game plan what was it?
BTW, I notice that Samson Ryan played in the VFl as well as our game. All in the one day, so maybe he can be excused for his lack of scoring.
Had to be a bit tired. He is an excellent mark I must say.
