Rich V Carl - Match Day Thread

when the team was announced it looked like Dimmas old boys club.
it happened last year as well and the selectors didn't take the opportunity to blood the younger guys when it was clear we were off it in 2021.
so it becomes a bit concerning for this year ..

Geez, we dont half turn on our team do we. The amount of knicker wetting on here has surpassed previous levels I thought we wouldn't see again. Time for a break from this site.

Can anyone who saw the VFL practice game last night give a bit of a report please?

I know we got smashed, and Sonsie has been mentioned as playing well.

How did, RCD, Dow, Martyn, Mansell, Miller, Ryan, Stack and others go?

Thanks in advance.
But we did have a few niggles in recent weeks.

anyway i dunno, i'm just trying to find a justifiable excuse for the fadeout last night. The Richmond of 2017-2020 would not have stopped to a walk in the last quarter like we did last night.
True, but the competition is getting stronger and faster, particularly last night. Voss said after the game it is all about the contest around the ball for him, he is big on a midfield ‘squad’ running machine. And that is what they have now got. Add Walsh to that is scary depth through there now.

I love Nank, but he was shocking last night, shouldnt have played, Soldo has barely played any footy. Dont people think this has a major issue with losing the clearances last night?

Well, we were outworked in the second half lastnight.
On this very limited exposure, it looks like our mids are too small.
Reminded me a bit of the 2021 GF, Carlton got big on us around the contest and we just couldn't react.
IMO Prestia is probably the most vital of our midfield cogs. No surprise to me that what happened after he went off.
Meh, the umps and the rules are quite bewildering and just plain sad. Have been for a long time. What is a throw, what is holding the ball, what is below the knees, what is stand the mark!

OK. Leysy's takes:

The good:

- Our ball movement was very good at times. To kick a reasonable score off limited entries was promising.
- Pickett
- Bolton
- Defence held up pretty well

The Bad:

- Team structure. Too many talls. Was worried about Soldo coming straight in off a knee. First one dropped for leysy (well second after Aarts). For his own benefit should be in the VFL until starts to dominate and get confident about his game again. It was a big unjury and hasnt played a proper game for 18 months. Will also enhance what has become a weakness - lack of run.
- Balta forward - Why was Dimma spooked to play him at the opening bounce of round 1 after an entire pre-season training (and at times dominating) forward. Voss would have breathed a big sigh of relief when we saw that.
- Talking of Dimma spooked - Graham playing after ZERO pre-season footy. Does he rate him that highly or he really does not rate our young mids Dow, RCD, Martyn etc at all.
- Midfield: Too much left to too few (and they are getting older). Been said ad nauseum on here but big concern with Meatball going down again.
- Aarts: Simply not up to it. Too easily moved off the ball.

Wouldn't go throwing the baby our of the bathwater with a heap of positional moves as yet. Get Baker back in the forward line where he has trained. Keep Rioli back. Improve our structure by bringing in more run. McIntosh replace Ross on a wing. Vlastuin will also help our rebound/intercept game we rely on so much.

Then see how we go. Only one game folks.

Blew some cobwebs off last night so our 2022 year of reckoning will be next game against Giants on Sunday 27th. Tarrant & Gibcus twos all year only play when injuries hit. Get the old guard back in the backline. Need another couple of hit men besides Dusty so Parker & Stack in.

Our list looks good on paper. Lot's of flag winners. On last night's effort I'd have Edwards first out. If fit and contracted, you have to retain players. Prestia can't stay on the park, Dusty looked half done, as did Graham. Getting Tarrant was interesting. Aarts and Ross have their problems too.
I'm furious at the 50s. I'd drop everyone who gave away goal as a result of one.
JR still okay.
I just got reminded that caddy got dropped after giving away a 50. Also, JR is injured. Broken hand.
Wonder what quarter.

The old guard? Who? Astbury and Houli? Rance? Vlastuin is injured. Tarrant and Gibcus kept McKay and Silvagni to one goal a piece. I Thought they did their job. In my opinion the backline wasn’t the issue.

Tarrant and gibcus in the 2s? I thought Rioli was the worst of the backline. Mansell any day of the week. (Apart from Grimes 50)
JR is injured and soldo didn't look great on the field. Balta might have to stay fwd now. I think he was a win up fwd. Caddy for some height in the fwd line? Bring in RCD for starters.

Whatttt? They keep Carltons 2 tall forwards to 1 goal between them and you want to drop them???

A defeat certainly seems to bring the crazies out.

What old guard would that be Tigaman?

Looked like the first qtr to me
Ouch. Gutsy for playing on. Jabbed I suppose.
Fair enough for all the players on our list go round again. Or as long as their contract lasts.
But the performance was more like the 2nd half of last season.

Presser out now

Dimma said everything being said here pretty much. Backline fine. Midfield smashed. Carlton better. Discipline an issue. Prestia out huge.

Had a significant beer blanket by games end however believe it was pretty early in the game. My son spotted him carrying his hand.

Thinking back. WTF were we doing with Baker in the midfield when Prestia went down? I love Bakes and think he could do ok I'm that role. But he hasn't been in there all pre season. One of our blokes goes down and we revert to something we haven't tried all pre Season? Where was the contingency planning?
Midgets vs giants was never going to work at that point
