Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

I find this obsession by some to compare players boring to be honest. We also have a thread comparing Martin with JettA and Rohan.
What's the point? I am interested in how good a Richmond player Reece Conca can be and Dustin Martin can be. I have no interest in Heppell, Jetta or Rohan unless we are trying to recruit them.
Well said
if they deliver for us great

Conca in my opinion has more scope for improvement. Where as heppell's game at the moment is pretty sound in all areas.
In 3-4 years conca's best footy will be better than heppell's.

+ 1

The point is we passed on heppel (and Darling!) and took conca, which was a surprise at the time
yes I am well aware of that but what is the point of debating it now? Conca is a Richmond player, end of story.

There are plenty of other sites which endlessly debate historical draft picks, do polls about which player is better and rank drafts 5 years after the event. To me it's a totally useless exercise.

I was just making the observation that the important thing for Richmond now is that Reece Conca become the best Richmond player he can be, not whether he is better than Heppell.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Yes and I don't think he has been anywhere near a pick 6 and I certainly hope he improves a lot.
I s not only that heppel came after him but rather that he was a total surprise to most pundits as top ten pick.

He could start by not gving away stupid free kicks every week

henri - 11 posts so far and all of them essentially negative - critical of Conca, Batchelor, Vickery & Maric.

Can you give us some players/areas you think are doing well?

I couldn't care less if it was a surprise to the pundits. At pick 6 he is no more or less a Richmond player than O'Hanlon or Deledio.

Honestly if you keep on comparing players to their draft picks and those picks around them you will do your head in. Do you think the Richmond heirachy are redoing the 2010 draft in their heads and wishing they had Heppell? I hope not , they should be spending their time helping Reece Conca become the best Richmond player he can be. In my opinion that will be a pretty good one.

What, because he wasn't in a BigFooty phantom draft top 10, he's suddenly a total surprise in the top 10?

Sorry-I didn't know I was being monitored and there was requirement to tell you who is doing well.

I was under the impression we are allowed to express our opinion on here-I haven't been abusive or nasty.

Cotchin is doing well.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

It is fascinating that so many people think a player should immediately be the finished product.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

I thought i would post a few basic stats from 2012 so far and let people make up their own mind about Conca and Heppell.

UP% CP% Tackle ave Clearance ave Disposal efficancy %
Conca----- 65.97 34.03 2.73 1.36 78.18 From 11 games
Heppell---- 74.37 25.63 2.67 0.89 72.89 From 9 games

From those stats so far i know i would rather have the player who goes in a bit harder and uses it better.

As for Heppell, for a player who gets a lot of ball out in the open you would hope he uses the ball a little better than what his DE% indicates.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

I originally thought we would have been better off picking Heppell. There were two reasons, one is he already was well built for his size and I believed we were short of that quality 190cm half back flanker who could also pinch hit in the middle. However, now that we're a year and a half down the track, I firmly believe that Batchelor will probably end up a better player than Heppell. Heppell has ended up being a lot more outside than I thought he would be. Batchelor is amazingly strong in the air, is hard at it, and has very solid disposal. On that basis, picking up Conca ahead of Heppell may turn out to be a master move. Still not totally convinced on Conca but the signs are there and he is still very young.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Do you have a stat for giving away crucial free kicks at critical times-repeatedly?

Or getting suspended?

Can you bring up 2011 stats?

There is no doubt this is a current weakness of Conca. He does have the one too many brain implosions but that's not hard to iron out. Seems caused more by desire than anythign else.

Heppell wouldn't have any stats in these categories. The seagull doesn't get close enough to a contest or opponent to register.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Or perhaps the 2011 ones not suiting his?

I don't know what they are, it was a genuine question . If he is comparing them, why only this year? Heppel did win the rising star which suggest some people thought he was ok.

Conca's very costly indiscretions are not minor issues, imo.
