Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

He's copped a couple of terrible decisions though too. At least 2 holding the balls I can remember him having no prior opportunity at all before beign wrapped up.

I think his kicking looks good because his decision making and composure are very good, along with actually being a nice kick.

Conca's had frees against in possession 9 times. 6th on the list. Martin (15), Cotchin (15), Nahas (14), Jackson (12), Foley (10) are above him but obviously generally speaking they are playing a lot more midfield and are getting much more possession. Personally though I prefer a young guy to take the game on like he does and learn from it than not take the chance. In time he will make those judgements better.

Maybe Leysy. I'm still looking forward to watching him when he's got some meat on the bones. His technique looks like one that'll develop into a beautiful thing in time to me.

Dont reckon Conca's 185 either FWIW. Not from leysy standing next to him anyway. Not that it really matters much for the role he'll play.

While we are talking comparisons. Well this isn't a comparison so much but the guy Reece should look up to, to try & emulate (on the track & in games at least ;D ) as he will end up playing a very similar style & role is a fellow Perth boy in our own Ben Cousins.

That level of fitness to continually give an option, provide overlap, run & provide linkup by hand is where he needs to get.

He has the hardest part down already - the innate ability to read the play & know where & when to get to to provide that option. Getting really elite aerobically will be the single biggest thing to determine how far he goes. Moreso than most other players.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Not to question you Leysy, but they measured him at 185 at the draft camp and the RFC also lists him as that.

Agreed on the rest of the post and reckon there's a good chance he'll get there.

Actually you might be right. Leysy had heels on.

:hihi

Honestly though, how can they not get the measurements right at draft camp? Did the dude writing it down have bad handwriting?

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Leysy may be wrong. It might just be deceiving because he hunches a bit.

Or they keyed a 5 into the keypad instead of a 2 when they entered the data.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

His technique is good, I'm expecting him to gain penetration with increased leg strength.

Settle on the Hodge kicking comparisons Disco.

Dont think he'll be able to drill the ball at speed like Hodge can nor have the depth in his boot that Hodge has.

Thats no knock on Conca who's been more than serviceable. That gather & quick kick at goal that was just touched on the weekend was class.
Hope for his sake he nails a goal soon. He was so disappointed when he thought that he had finally got one, only to have it touched on the line

Agree, Definitely not. Looks 181-182cm at most. I thought this when he was drafted. People will shrug it off but it does make a little bit of a difference overall to a players worth.

Is he smaller than Gary Jnr or Boomer Harvey? Hasn't hurt them too much.

Care to postulate as to how multiple sets of professional football people managed to measure (or report) his height incorrectly Jimmy?

FWIW, I had a look at a game from earlier in the year and he and Cotchin look very similar in size when standing near each other.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Showed some good signs against the Cats again. Love the way he moves in traffic and generally makes good decisions.
Spent a fair bit of time on the ball too I noticed in the 2nd half.
I've actually been very impressed with his first season.
A big positive out of 2011.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Curious to see how far he comes in the next 2-3 years. Been a solid first season but, while, I see alot of potential, not sure if he is a set A grader in future.... We will see

His attack on the ball is very good. Not afraid to go into traffic even though his frame is still slight.

I am not sure his kicking is elite. I would call it neat and above average but not elite. It's not a issue at all but he is not in the Martin or Deledio class of kicking. But will be a vital cog of our midfield moving forward.

Martin is far from elite catergory kick at this stage! Yes he is a long kick but in the last 4or5 weeks he has given some howling turn overs or taken soft sideways options rather than pin pointing a target 50 or 55 down the ground as an elite kick does. Like Delidio or Newman or Houli.

As far as I'm concerned Dustin Martin is very much in the potential column not the arrived super star that is touted on PRE or some section of the media

Kudos to you Tooheys.

Kicking is not elite, but over short and medium distances it is very very good. He is not a long or a very penetrating kick however. Overall very happy with Concs. His willingness to run, create, follow up etc reminds me of Cousins who as others have said would be an excellent player for Reece to base himself on
