Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

will be playing on the ball from round 1 2012.
Nice pick, but heppel is better for mine.

So do you want a midfielder or a back flanker?

They will both be on the ball as they get more experience, but i think heppell will become a better player.
Of course I hope im proven wrong.
I want a ruckmen, a monster CHB and a tough back pocket plumber!

Heppel was very average last night, will be a great player for sure but Conca and Heppel's introduction to AFL footy are very very different propositions.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

more pre seasons he will only get better. Needs to get more strength in his core and in the legs.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Have said it before on here.

Heppell is as good as he will be. Conca still have a lot of improvment in him.

Conca has the sort of composure and play reading ability you cannot easily teach.

If Heppell goes into the middle, he will become a different sort of player. He will certainly not get the freedom he has enjoyed playing off HBF. Can he handle it? I don't know the answer for sure, but I am not sure he will week in week out. I think he will actually become a Hodge type rebounding defender. Still a fantastic sort of player to have.

Conca I do see as being a true midfielder. He is learning the game defensively and it will stand him in good stead.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

I think a lot of people are forgetting that Conca had a very short pre-season with the Ankle Surgery he had when coming to the club, from memory he only had about 2-4 weeks of pre-season before being eased into it in the NAB cup and NAB challenge games.

We are all thinking it so its ok to say it.......not picking Heppell is another drafting mistake and by the looks of it a Rising Star / Brownlow level mistake

I agree Mr Magic, an absolute drafting tragedy. This could come back to haunt us the same way Hawthorn have suffered by taking Hodge before Judd!

Not sure his kicking is as good as the wraps.

Also continues to refuse to kick on his left. I thought he was dual sided, maybe a confidence thing.

How can you be so sure Heppell won't improve. And really, Heppell could continue to play at his current level and be a fine player.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Agree. Very silly post from Streak.

He ignores the fact that Conca has spent a lot of his first year off a HBF and when Heppell has pushed into the midfield here and there he's still looked quality and showed his ball winning ability, composure, etc. Will be a similar type to Pendlebury for mine. Also ignores the fact Heppell played a lot of his juniors in the midfield and dominated.

I like Conca. Pretty happy with him so far as a first year player and don't think he will be a bust but still prefer Heppell.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Reece will be a prime mover one day and Heppell will be a great utility. Batch may also be a very good utility so I think we drafted wisely and essendon also did well. At this point Heppell looks far superior.

Dude are you serious?? Your saying there is absolutely no upside to Heppell? An 18 year old kid playing in his first year, likely rising star is as "good as he will be"? One of the most ridiculous things I have read on PRE. I'm a huge fan of Heppell and at the moment is miles ahead of Conca. He has the ability you can't teach, great decision making. At the moment he doesn't have the tank, so gets exhausted running out games, so I'm predicting this kid will be an absolute star (if he isn't already) in a couple of years time, once he builds his tank.

Conca may get there in a few years time too, and sure may have more upside, but to say Heppell won't get any better is just non-nonsensical.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Are Gold Coast, Brisbane and West Coast all crying into their weeties over missing Heppell? Do their recruiters suck? Because it can't just be Richmond.

There is still a lottery element to the draft. But with high choices you need to make sure you get a good player. I'd only worry about missing Heppell if Conca ended up being a total bust (like Fiora, Tambling, Thorp etc.)

Conca shows all the attributes of being a good player - has a touch of class about him and has impressed early on. Incredible that he hardly had a pre-season too.

Couple of kids called Lance Witnall and Tom Hawkins never improved much after being drafted. Daniel Rich would be another that is about as good as he was when he started.
Haven't seen much of Heppell so I'm not gunna bag him to hard for a bomber snot, but I have noticed that he spends most of his game roaming around on his own. For a defender he seems to play very loose, makes him an ideal easy release player and he certainly creates well.
Might be a bit of Tiger bias but Reecey seems to me to be getting a much harder footy education playing in our overwhelmed backline with bits n pieces of mid work. Reckon he just might shade Heppell in a couple of years time.

Rich is definitely better than when he started.

heppell certainly got an education in a few one-on-ones with murphy on the weekend, including once when murphy just waltzed around him on the mark. putting my anti-bummer hat on he is a bit soft and unaccountable, putting my footy supporter hat he is doing well for a first year player and wouldnt mind seeing him a tiger jumper.

too early to tell if we made the right call or not. but certainly dont mind what conca has shown so far.

Did you see Gaff last week against the Saints? Id say the Eagles would be fairly happy. Polec aswell had a great start to the year but is out for the season.

Im not going to judge Conca until he has a good pre season behind him but would be nice if he has a breakout game soon like the others have had.
