Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Am beginning to think we may have made a huge mistake in taking Conca when we could've and taken Heppell. Hindsight is a wonderful thing

We made the right choice for us I think. Young Heppell looks to be an outstanding talent, but I think what you get now is as good as it gets.

I reckon Reece has a fair bit of development left in him, and shows outstanding composure and leadership traits. Just wait til he has been with us for a couple of good preseasons.

I have heard criticism of him being caught with the ball too much, but it strikes me that he prizes it and will not dispose of it unless he sees a clear opportunity to do so. He has a bit to learn, but his teammates also need to be running harder to creat those opportunities.

People also say he hits the ground to much. That may be the case, but gee, if that is the biggest knock on him, I'll take it any day. Easy to teach a player to stay on their feet. You can't teach the kicking skills, and ability to create time for himself that Reece has.

Conca reminds me of a young Michael Tuck with the way he just goes about the game.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Like Conca, but gee that Heppell is something special. The kid is an elite kick and decision maker, something we have lacked for years. While im not totally dissapointed in grabbing Conca, if the club had the chance again i definitely would go for Heppell. He has Pendelbury written all over him.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Heppell is the classic cooee footballer. Great when no one is within cooee. Conca is much better at the contest. Will be important for us going forward.

I would agree with that.

Conca is being asked to play a very defensive style of game, being held to account. This will stand him in good stead for the future. Yep, he has copped a couple of baths from experienced players in the process, but that is all part of it.

Heppell maybe be being asked to do similar, but I don't see it. He is allowed a more free wheeling run at it and with his use of the ball, he looks great.

But loose man in defence is the easiest game in town. Even guys like Jason Cloke and Patrick Bowden looked like champs when playing that role.

Heppell is a very talented footy player, and I am not trying to deny that.

I just do think that in the long run, Conca was a better choice for us.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Heppell is playing a very similar role to what Deledio played in his first year. Conca is getting a decent apprenticeship learning there are two ways you have to play at this level.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

We are all thinking it so its ok to say it.......not picking Heppell is another drafting mistake and by the looks of it a Rising Star / Brownlow level mistake

Think that might be true - a few here trying to talk themselves into the fact that we did the right thing.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

It's classic PRE. Talk down any other player to justify a Richmond player.

Conca is going ok and I think will be a very good footballer but Heppell is the best player from that crop. Both Conca & Heppell fill areas that we lack in but I just thought at the time that Dyson Heppell could be one out of the box and that is why he was the guy I wanted all the way back in July last year.

But at the same time Reece Conca will play 150 games of AFL football and you cannot be unhappy with that.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Unbelieveable.

Who is talking down Heppell.

Oh dear, Heppell might be a better player than Conca, another drafting mistake, when will we get it right :'(

You guys think you can judge these kids on 15 games of league footy FFS.

Heppell looks great, but to Conca looks like being an excellent player regardless.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Conca's composure and ball use is better than most first year players. Great decision making. That'll really come to the fore as he involves himself more and more in the midfield. Should furnish into a good size too.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Heppell has had a fantastic year and is favorite for the Rising Star.
Conca is showing a lot for us too.

Just remember the debut seasons of players like Rioli and Palmer, Hill and Rich and Watts and Natinui.

I'm very confident on Conca as much as I admire Heppell.
Conca is a good driver in heavy traffic already and has a lot of improvement left in him along with most of our young mids.
Hopefully he won't get a tag until he's 25 or so.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Great game today Reece! Liked his courage when he slammed into Matty Stokes.
