Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Certainly gone off the boil a bit since his Rising Star nomination.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

I am sure the fitness guys are monitoring his fatigue levels and a spell will happen soon.

However, each and every game he plays this year is an investment in 2012 and beyond. If he can 20+ games under his belt then the benefits will show next season.

While he was a bit quiet last night he still did some really good things. I am sure Dimma wouldn't be disappointed with his recent weeks.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Some of his work in traffic was superb, however agree that a rest wouldn't hurt him.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Certainly played more AFL footy in his first year than I expected.

Though, I am concerned that the demands of this hard running may have negative Long Term impacts upon his under-developed legs.

Note that he is a WA boy, and therefore hasn't had the depth of development that the TAC brings, such as with a Deledio, Cotchin or Dustin Martin.

Wouldn't want OP issues at End of Season.

Would certainly rotate to ease the stress on those 'junior' legs.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

The only thing I haven't liked is the number of times he dives on the ball and just tries to wrap it up and get a bounce. Gets done for holding quite a bit this way. I'm being picky though, he's been excellent for a first year player.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

I said to play him this week because of the timing of our byes. If we rest him now, it's 4 games until the bye, after only playing 2 games since our last bye. If we rest him against Carlton, it's a 3-3 split.

I would rest him this week, without a worry. Would probably even give him the weekend off footy so his body has a chance to recover and re-energize.
Rest him?! He just had a week off a fortnight ago.

Thought he was better in the second half. No way that I would drop or rest Conca. Brisbane game just further demonstrated how desperate we are for class/clean ball handlers and devliers. Nup, he stays in all year unless injured. Given the 'free pass' of Edwards and others with poor form then Conca's got a few weeks left in him yet.

Shouldn't be dropped - Won't be dropped....

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

It wouldn't be dropped - as per form or anything.

It would purely be to rest him, to prolong his season.

IMO each player needs to be managed individually. And a rest may just freshen him up, for more impact later in the season.

Well said mate!

Even the Pies do this, they were discussing on AW how they like to give each of their midfielders a break during the season to freshen them up. I have t-shirts older than this kid, and he has been hard at it since day one.

Its interesting that all the major Rising star candidates have tailed off a bit . Smith and Swallow were rested for the Suns , Darling has dropped off and was subbed this week , Heppell's output has dropped a lot . Reece had a short preseason as well and you can see he is struggling a bit .
Far too valuable to run into the ground . Even Dusty had a rest last year if I remember correctly .

The sub idea has some merit but keep playing him still as is still doing some excellent things in games. The byes are rest enough.

We have another month before our next bye, if he's struggling now we may risk running him into the ground by then

I don't see him being run into the ground but if the powers that be decide he needs a rest well and good.
However otherwise get the experience into him.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Martin was not rested last year, although he clearly faded towards the end. On the bye, i don't think that 1 week is enough for the 1st year players. At least 2, maybe more I rekon.

No argument there. Good thing is now the medical teams monitor conditioning very closely, so if Conca is beginning to show signs of fatigue, they will respond before he starts getting fatigue related injuries.

Pretty sure Martin was rested last year for our game against Geelong.
