We had the first pick in the very first draft and selected Anthony Banik and the trend has continued. Only recently does it look like we may have realized how to utilize the draft successfully.

umm no, Martin Leslie was pick 1 in 86 IIRC, we picked Richard Anderson

Lounder was 87 & Banik 89

None of these were drafts the way we know them now anyway. Clubs still had metro and country zones and could sign anyone they wanted in those zones.

Re: Reece "Not Heppell" Conca

Banik suffered from chronic fatigue in his 3rd season and back then it was not understood. (from memory)

Ive been following VFL/AFL a VERY long time & are well aware of that, I was correcting the OP who said "We had the first pick in the very first draft " = factually incorrect

I know, mate. I was adding to your point, not correcting it.

Re: Reece "Blue Velvet" Conca

Conca been itching for seven years about time he scratched the right numbers week in week out.

Re: Reece "Blue Velvet" Conca

How easy was he pushed out of the contest in that last quarter on the boundary line that resulted in a Collingwood goal? Other than a couple of other brain fades he was overall quite good.

Re: Reece "Blue Velvet" Conca

Really good tonight. Did Hunt's role and did it a hundred times better.

Re: Reece "Blue Velvet" Conca

cementing a long overdue place. rapt for him.

Re: Reece "Blue Velvet" Conca

He really does have an uncanny way of weaving through heavy traffic, doesn't he?

Two very good games in a row, and visibly improving as his confidence is growing.

If he can stay on the park and play like that every week, he'll have a huge say in whether we make finals.

You mean the one he was pushed square in the back?
Conca is better than Hunt. Still not completely convinced but going ok apart from a few errors.

Re: Reece "Blue Velvet" Conca

I'm just blind to the good in this guy. He is a good ordinary player to me. Some say he's quick, I've never seen him burn an opponent. Better than Hunt? Faint praise if ever there was. CEllis, Menadue, Markov, K_Mac need to be pushing him out of the side.

yep you are.

He was pretty good last night. His 3rd quarter was better than that and was very important.

Re: Reece "Blue Velvet" Conca

2 solid games.

But still manages to burn the ball a couple times a match so badly you have no idea how it was even possible. Kicks that go at right angles off his boot.

We saw with the Short inclusion how important foot skills in the back half are. Let's hope Markov can gain some form.
