Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Re: Reece "Not Heppell" Conca

Conca isn't as bad as fiora
But picking Conca over Lynch is very close as fiora over pavlova
And Considering we just has Richo retire what were the dumb knobs thinking.
Lennon is just *smile*.
Ellis and Ellis very average

Just too misses with quality picks

Re: Reece "Not Heppell" Conca

Blah blah, bloody blah. Personally I reckon picks become exponentially more difficult after 3, then after 5, then after 10, and so it goes. One word to redress the balance: $HAI!

nice snake.

I recon he could redefine redress.

not that Reecey C hasnt got something left to give.

Re: Reece "Not Heppell" Conca

He's gunna redress the *smile* out of it. Jack already has as well, but that is never spoken of. Butler is a bolter as a potential redresser as well!

i know this is splitting hairs.
Who was the better pick?
Fiona or Richard Flounder?
Geez this club has made some blunders over the years.
WE will continue to be a comedy until we raise the bar in the recruiting dept.

Richard Lounder #1 draft pick, played 4 games. Fiora had some skill just too bloody skinny. Pretty obvious who was the worse pick (can't get myself to say 'better' pick) to me.

Re: Reece "Not Heppell" Conca

Memo to Baloo, I think I prefer Reece 'Lynch Mob' Conca.

Since Fiora played 78 games for us and Lounder only 4 then Fiora was a better pick! He was drafted as a speedy, skilled wingman but he never bulked up from his 79kg draft weight and was just too easily brushed aside and too easily outmarked. Never saw him take a contested mark and was an outside runner, bit timid in the contest. How he ever played 140 AFL games I'll never know. Delisted by the saints with one year left on his contract.

Love to have a chat with Lounder to find out why he gave up...did he have on-going injuries? Drafted in 1987 didn't play a senior game for whole of 1988. Perhaps he just didn't want to be a professional footballer or moving interstate from SA was just too hard? who knows. He had the physical attributes but no desire which shows how poor our interviewing of draftees was back then. Nowadays you would hope his lack of desire would have shown up at the interview stage.

Recently we have been raising the bar to some extent since those bad old days with Butler and Castagna now coming through along with Rioli, Nankervis, Prestia, Caddy, etc. Every club has a few misses in their drafting if you look back through the players that never made it. At least with Conca we picked someone who had a very strong desire to be the best he could be and he was one of our key on-ballers in 2013 before that massive hammy tear in the EF. Hope he can have an injury-free year to show why he deserves his place.

Lounder was a very serious drinker, prob even an alcoholic during his time at the Tiges. The story goes that the guy helping KB with fitness offered to go around and see Richard one Sunday morning and take him for a run as he was going backwards fast. When fitness guy arrived there was Richard in bed with an esky full of VB's on ice, with about 4 crushed cans already on the floor and it was barely 10am. He left Melbourne for good about a week later.

Got to live the dream, VFL footballer and drinker extraordinaire. Lot to admire in that story, a real country hic

Heppel or Lynch?

Well I'd take Lynch if I could go back in time. I reckon Lynch has more value and we'll soon appreciate that when we throw the kitchen sink at Schache.

Why they have comprehensive pre draft interviews & psych testing these days.

Re: Reece "Not Heppell" Conca

We had the first pick in the very first draft and selected Anthony Banik and the trend has continued. Only recently does it look like we may have realized how to utilize the draft successfully.

Banik was a decent player but too much was expected too soon. Probably not worthy of a top pick but had he been managed correctly I suspect his career would have been lengthened significantly. For the record he suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome which pretty much destroyed his AFL career.

The draft was a bit of crap shoot back then. Only 15 players out of the 116 selected played more games than Banik.

Agree with that. Banik was actually a pretty good player. From memory they were effectively playing in a key back role from day one despite his lack of height.
