Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Not sure about others but I actually get quite excited on the rare occasions he gets a run on the ball.
You can see the impact he'll have down the line.

Spot on.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

There was one piece of play where he was corralled up against the boundary by his opponent and I think another hawk nearby. I don't know how he did it (and neither did his opponent), but with the slightest of body movements he got his opponent to move one way while he sprinted past on the boundary.

It was a bit of confidence and class that you don't often see in a 3gamer.

The Squirrel will be cracking opposition nuts before long.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Reece is going very well for a 1st year player, will benefit from 50+ games.

Yeah, starting to feel a bit nervous. Heppell looks like a future superstar.
Haha.........Can you please name one notable player who Heppell has shut down in the backline in his 3 games so far?

Remember that clearly Baloo. I was sitting right behind him when that happened. He looked like he was gone for all money but like you said he ended up moving past his opponent and kicked it down the boundary line to Grahams advantage.

Yeah, you can't call it after 3 games but you also can't deny Heppell looks like an absolute gun. Let's just hope Conca is better, I'd like to see him moved to the midfield to get him more into the game.

There is no doubt Heppell is going to be a gun. He already has the physique and has height. That's why I really wanted us to get him. Some were saying that he was a backline player. Well he's already had stints in the midfield and that is going to be his future position, I have no doubt about it. Saying that I think Conca has shown alot in his 3 games. He is picking up plenty of contested ball and is overall very calm and collected. Statistically though Heppell is ahead in all statistics including tackles except for contested possession.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

I don't think making early calls on Conca vs. Heppell does anyone any credit.

I reckon the jury is still very much out on the top 10 of the 2008 draft, so I don't think any serious footy watcher should get worked up about comparisons between guys so early in their career.

It will be an interesting debate in a few years, now it's just blowin' in the wind.

Exactly Col

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Heppel was a more talented junior but Essendon made a rumor that he had injury issue so he slid down the draft and Essendon's bluff pulled off. Its really quite funny how the Bomber's bluff pulled off

With the greatest of respect Collo I'm sure the club makes it's won medical assessment on prospects and doesn't rely on a bigfooty rumor

Exactly, we simply rated Conca more than Heppell. That's it.

yep. i vividly remember that play. conca has shown us plays like that in all 3 games he's played so far. let's be honest, at this stage, all we need to see from first year players (esp those who's had interrupted preseasons like conca) are glimpses of brilliance. sure we'd love to see them take the game by storm like dusty did last year but martin is the exception not the norm.

i'd much rather see our young players getting experience by playing on good players than racking up cheap possessions in the backline playing loose man.

lol 3 games in rubbish call.

Whilst Heppell continues to get cheap kicks in a Bomber team that is winning, this will look bad.

If Heppell was at Richmond you would be leading the calls that he is soft, outside, one paced and has no right foot.

We are damned if we do and damned if we don't with most.

Conca will be the better all round player when you can judge their careers. Right now, relax, have a coffee and don't get wound up on Bigfooty type worries.

Wow 3 games in and we have to put up with this crap.

good post...some jump at shadows in here...

3 games in 1st year interupted preseason, the kid is silk.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Agreed it is ridiculous to be comparing players 3 games into a 10 year career. Someone like Lance Whitnall probably peaked as a 19 year old as they were already physically mature. Heppell was more mature than Conca at 18 but it may be a very different story when they are 22. The Tigers identified Conca as their choice and have never seemed anything less than thrilled with their choice.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

will be a player. as for heppell, we have a back flanker that will be just as good in Batchelor.

That was against Guerra. It was a nice bit of work and agree he does things that give you hope and confidence he will be an important player in the future. He looks the type of player that wants to make things happen.

Disappointing game. He can play but Reece has a lot of work to do on his wet weather skills.
'

Geez something we agree on :hihi :hihi

He was like a fish out of water in the wet conditions last night but I don't reckon he would have seen too much of that in Perth.

I think he'll be a good player though. He moves well and has a nice level of skill. Get him out of the backline now though. He's a natural midfielder so get him on a wing or a HFF at least.
