Re: Adam Goodes

Great career, dual Brownlow medalist, dual grand final winner.

Biggest compliment I can give is I wish he was a Richmond player

Wow, has there ever been a player so polarising as Adam Goodes.

In some camps he’s a sook and a whimp (booooo ...harden up princess), a stager, an elbow man and a kicker - a dirty player (boooo yer dirty bastard), a bully of little girls (booooo ..pick on someone yer own size ... booo), a (and I love this…) crowd intimidator (hahaha….so many helpless carlton supporters and home viewers terrorized when he did indigenous war dance.. hahahaha..too scary …boooo), a mixer of sport and politics (boooo – unaustralian bastard! boooo) , a polarising speech maker (boooo – how dare he have a considered opinion … booo) and as Drexel of True Romance would say ‘a diddled eyed joe to damned if I know’.

In other camps he’s a champion footballer (what?), an eloquent speaker(whaat?), an activist for indigenous rights (wrong place wrong time), a good man and an outstanding contributor to modern Australia (whaaaat?).

Wish he had’ve played all those games for the Tiges....

Or he might be an outstanding footballer, who has had a brilliant career. A CV up there with the best of all time. Respected across the board for his contribution.

And still be a flog.

real dignified contribution there Midsy 'ol son.

IMHO an outstanding footballer, possibly the best swingman the game has ever seen having played everywhere from wing to ruck. I didn't always like the way he played but geez he could play.

Also an outstanding advocate for indigenous Australians. His work with Michael O'Loughlin in their foundation ( go-foundation ) and also with white ribbon , specifically related to violence against women in the indigenous population, is hopefully his lasting legacy.

He didn't always do it perfectly but at least he did it and still does.

I have him up there with my other love/hate champion Carey. Carey could be a filthy sniper when he wanted to be, but that doesn't diminish his ability to change the course of a game, to have an almost gravitational affect on the football. Goodes is the modern player I have seen who has that ability.

Spot on. And that's why I am glad he has retired as a football player. I wish him every success for the future.

Yeah, got to admit, I’m also glad he retired. Watching Sydney this year has been a real bummer - now I’ll be able to watch a swan’s game without feeling so ashamed. But ofcourse it will never be the same - that booing can not be magically undone.

Its an excellent comparison. Carey was a very dirty player, (lets face it every side needs one) but a massive whinger and stager for frees as well. He would absolutely cream someone, lose balance in the act, then scream at the ump for not paying him a free for being interfered with. Over and over again, he was incredible. Goodes staging or frequency of dirty acts wasn't in the same league. Carey got a few boos from opposition supporters during a game when he'd taken someone out, not many though, and every game was a new day.

Like before it depends on why people are booing

That's not quite what some people on here and in the media were trying to assert, that anyone booing was supporting the racists and therefore racist themselves. The real reason behind the booing was evidently irrelevant to some.

I agree with you Baloo. I really couldn't care less about Goodes and the whole booing saga. But if I go to the football and boo a player or an umpire, I resent being told why I did it by people who haven't got a clue.

My question was more directed towards those who have continually pushed their opinion that anyone who boos is being racist or is supporting racism.

That's me then, what was the question?

If Goodes hadn’t offended some with his AOTY speech, hadn’t reacted (the way he did) to being called an ape, hadn’t performed his terrirfying indigenous jig – all of which relate to his indigeneity and all of which were deemed inappropriate by some – then the booing could only be interpreted as booing a dirty mongrel champ. Right?

But Goodes is political and did offend mainly non indigenous people. So if someone is a booer of Goodes for other reasons how do you propose that anyone in the stadium distinguish the non racist more discernible boos from those of the racists?

Ever heard that saying, you are the company you keep……
