Someone capable of the most vile abuse apparently has a change of heart and apologises to Dempsey, and the comment (aka evidence) is deleted...

Now I'm not saying something is definitely rotten here, but it's possible that all may not be as it seems.

Just speculating, conspiracy theories aren't my thing at all.

i dont know what was written or by who, but im not sure what part you are cynical about.
fool writes something stupid on social media, gets called out for it, realises their stupidity, takes it down and apologizes. do you expect them to try to defend whatever they wrote?

I saw the abuse, it was completely brain-dead. No mention of the tackle or Deledio, just a string of insults seemingly calculated to be as offensive as possible and accompanied by the poster's Richmond logo/avatar. I dunno... I've read a lot of things and there was something that didn't sit quite right with it. Kinda like a well-crafted scam email.

Maybe the person will be identified like the spitter. No objection if he is. Dempsey has clear air in which to press charges now.

I think Lee is suggesting Essendon did it and then deleted it as part of mounting a defence for leniency. I.e. not a bona fide tweet and attack on Dempsey at all.

Yes. Not making allegations or even suggesting it's likely, just mentioning it as a possibility.

Did they ever identify "Sarah"? This would be easier to pull off.

Having had dealings with the Computer Crime Squad I reckon there's a bit of bluffing. I'd be very surprised if there was a positive legal outcome in regards to this unless the culprit confesses.

Pretty run of the mill occurrence at the christmas drinks of the factories I used to work in the 80s and 90s.

What an absolute load of crap. How does social media abuse after being charged, mitigate his actions?
No wonder people are cynical.
Why would people be cynical? That defence wasn't accepted by the tribunal.

The AFL's counsel suggested it shouldn't be considered. Whether it had any mitigating effect on the penalty wasn't reported.
He got 4 weeks which was consistent with the penalty for " severe" that Vickery got last year so that would suggest it wasn't.

The guy defending Dempsey was just doing his job imo.

Pretty weak to go down the path of citing something that happened after the event in order to lessen the penalty, "He's already suffered" etc. And that's being kind.

It's also called playing the race card.

Considering comments about booing being racist I wonder what people would think if Dempsey fronted up against Richmond again in the finals...oh wait his team aren't playing finals are they...and was booed as any player who did such an ordinary thing could be subject to.

I wouldnt have any issues if the RFC Faithful gave it to Dempsey every time he got the ball.

He was remorseful, at some point you've got to let it go.

In the absence of any public apology that is customary after nasty incidents, he did seem remorseful in the few minutes of the game that remained. However citing an online heckler in his defence suggests a desire to avoid taking full responsibility, something not exactly unknown at Essendon.

Anyway justice has been served and he had a clean record for ten years. I don't think I'd bother booing him if he plays against Richmond next year.

I call it George W. Bush "diplomacy". Or as the Catholic's would have it...It is easier to ask forgivness than to ask permission. I agree that Dempsey appeared remorseful after the incident. But to get this out of the game we need players to think about the consequences "before" not "after" they act.
