Re: Adam Goodes

Re: Does the AFL discriminate?

Goodesy actually used a blunt, purely ceremonial imaginary spear for his dance so there's no need to be intimidated.

Re: Does the AFL discriminate?

I think as Waleed Aly said, Goodes is a proud unapologetic black man. It seems that freaks some whiteys out.

BTW I am a whitey.

Let's stick to what Adam said about what he directed at the crowd. "It's a war cry, it's a battle. It's supposed to intimidate you, it's supposed to say, 'This is who we are. Come at us.' "

I have been sticking to what he said: "There was nothing untoward to the Carlton supporters. "

But that's still not meant to be the focus of this thread. Do you have any opinions to share on the actual topic?

His intent goes to the question at hand.

How was the culture celebrated by something that's meant to intimidate? Why wasn't it aimed at the Swans team or cheer squad if it was such a celebration? Why the reference to indigenous round. It's happened again since and it's been called for all indigenous players to do it in non-indigenous round. What "culture" does a newly formed dance celebrate?

I have seen a reference to it being based on an older aboriginal dance.

The real "PC gone mad" is a bunch of conservative commentators getting butt-hurt when an aboriginal man did a cultural dance on the field.
Nah I don't reckon. I think its everyone bowing to what they feel they should be doing and saying.
Being that we are all "equal" he should have copped a fine for getting in the fans faces. I wouldn't have agreed but there is a precedent set.

For a real rather than manufactured discussion on Discrimination maybe this will assist.

Re: Does the AFL discriminate?

I would have thought the bird and the jail salute are offensive but the War Cry / Dance is actually entertaining and of cultural significance. Oh heck with it ...won't somebody please think of the white people? :'(

It's anti-political correctness gone mad

Maybe so. I don't think the AFL should operate on political correctness whether pro or anti.

Re: Does the AFL discriminate?

This Adam Goodes saga was nothing but a ploy to raise the issue of discrimination and feed it into this week's multicultural round.

How much did Goodes get paid for this?

I can only assume you're being deliberately obtuse to push an agenda. It was a cultural celebration. Why the reference to the indigenous round? Seriously? It was in the indigenous round.

It was encouraged because it's a celebration of culture, and one man was persecuted for it. It was a celebration, and the encouragement of it, which seems to have offended you so much, was an attempt to show the public that it was in fact a celebration of culture. Indigenous players were happy to dance for their history, and encouraged to do so, as they damn well should be. The AFL encouraged players to show the public that their heritage is not something to be confined to a societal safe zone, where people don't have to think too much about our country's indigenous culture. The AFL told them to be proud of who they are, and celebrate their people.

For you to somehow think that's the same as Ben Cousins flipping the bird, and should be treated as such, or otherwise be labelled 'discrimination' is absurd.

But you had already decided it was discrimination... discrimination against... something.

Lucky he didn't throw an imaginary hand-grenade, the imaginary casualties would have been even worse

Re: Does the AFL discriminate?

At least the imaginary spear valued at $20,000 on eBay. :hihi
