Re: Adam Goodes

Sam Newman, Jason Akermanis, Andrew Bolt, Alan Jones.

That's your squad. Good luck with them.

instead of dwelling on how people were treated centuries ago in America. I don't think Sam was being racist.

the 1960s wasn't centuries ago. As I posted earlier in this thread, Aboriginal people didn't get equal pay in Queenland until 1986. Official racism (laws) didn't end until the 1960s-1980s. Unofficial racism (people's attitudes, who picked for jobs, house rentals) continues. Its not ancient history. People want it to be, but its not.

Newman was being racist.

What happened in the 1960s in relation to someone painting their face pretending to be aboriginal? My comment of centuries may not be accurate but the info I got from the link you gave was around in the 1930s in America. Newman, and Ian who raised him, wasn't passing comment on pay and house rental. Nicky was proud of his skin colour and rightly so.

Using the definition of racist as "Discrimination or prejudice based on race" was Goodes racist in saying he wouldn't aim his intimidating spear throwing at opposition Aboriginal players? If it was a genuine war dance the opposition enemy, regardless of race would be the target, not the fans in the outer.

What happened centuries ago in the US? I didn't provide a link, just gave a suggestion for a google search.

Please forgive my poor teminology. Of course search is different to link. The links came from your search suggestion. I'm sure you knew what I meant still. You could Google 'why is blackface offensive? and read the results I read.

I know why blackface is offensive. It was a comedy theatre with the central premise of portraying black people as stupid for laughs. Sam Newman donned blackface, deliberately badly, still had the shoepolish, and prentended to be Nicky Winmar, and raved on about how he had gone walkabout. It amazes me how anyone would think that wasn't racist.

(I didn't actually know what you meant BTW, I thought I might have somehow accidently entered something that changed into a hyperlink)

Finally we agree. The issue here is ignorance. Plain and simple.

I don't think anyone is ignorant IMHO.
I think it is a good debate. I think some people look deeper in things and try and find reasons and meanings that may not be there.
Some people have agendas and like to think they will help save humanity from itself.
I also think I'd rather have people boo at the footy than swear and yell vile abuse. Or like in other parts of the world where they throw bananas.
I think it was in Russia where some fans of a club set fire to a players car because he was black. They were part of the same club!
Imagine Sydney fans setting fire to Adam Goodes car out the front of the SCG because he was black?
Now that's racism.
So things have come a long way but I think there has to be an outlet for the fans who like to show disapproval towards opposition players.
I think Adam is getting off quite light when you look at some of the other examples people face.
Booing during a match?
That's not racism.

Hi Tigersnake.
Can I ask, if a white person is playing dress up and pretending to be a black person, how can he make himself closer to the real thing without making his face black?
Nicky Winmar is black and Sam Newman is white. Sam Newman wanted to pretend to be Nicky Winmar.
How does he go about it to make himself look like Nicky Winmar then?

Um, just don't do it?

Yes, Newman was being racist when he donned blackface and pretended to be a black person, he would also be sexist if he pretended to be a female politician, and considering that one of the ladies mentioned passed away fairly recently it would also be in extremely poor taste. I believe he was accused of sexism, quite rightly, when he made fun of Caroline Wilson using a cardboard cutout of her. Newman is a racist, sexist boor whose use by date as an 'entertainer' was passed some years ago.

Wasn't it a blow-up doll? Yeah he's a piece of work. But as PT Barnum said 'nobody ever went broke underestimating the public's taste'.

So I can never go to a costume party as Michael Jackson because its racist to the whole black race if I paint my face black just to simply get closer to looking like the real thing?
That's a strange answer. What is wrong with people if they cannot understand the context of certain things as impersonating a specific person with the intent of having fun at a party. ???
Are you Indigenous yourself? If so, why do indigenous people take themselves so seriously.
I would have no issue with you painting your face white to look like me.
I think maybe that is a big part of the issue with this Goodes topic.
People need to lighten up. Not everything is about racism and people being derogatory to others.

You don't need to paint your face black to look like Michael Jackson.

You're right, this is a big part of the problem re the Goodes topic. Some believe the intent should overrule how it's received, the other side is saying how it's received is more pertinent.
