As do anglo-Australians. Unlike some others I don't think racism is acceptable no matter who it is directed from or to. I find the double standards quite disappointing. I wish everyone could treat others with respect regardless of their skin colour or heritage.

i agree.

do you think white Australians cop the same level of racism as Indigenous Australians or some ethnic minorities?

So Eddie now has to go to counselling over this. With Jason Mifsud!

Mifsud, who falsely called Neeld a racist!

I'd love to be a fly on the wall. I can't imagine Eddie enjoying being lectured.

i doubt Eddie had racist intention when he said what he said. he was stupid to say it, but he would have been even more stupid if he thought about then still said it.

It was the casual 'slip of the tongue' that everybody's got, but the problem with Eddie is that he's on air publicly and he's done this before. Dementia sometimes plays a part when you get old. Racism happens everywhere around the world, but admittedly, black people (Africans, Indians, Aborigines) cop it worst.

The Eddie and Harry show on AFL360 was a bit hilarious where all they did was just reiterating their points over and over again, with Harry backing up Eddie along the way (probably to save his spot in the team ;D) as Gerard asked Eddie if he should stand down as President....geez.

I am not qualified to measure levels. Hard to work out when there are far more anglos than indigenous people here anyway. No doubt it happens both ways though. I've heard unbelievable abuse come from Aboriginals at the local footy. Those it was directed towards thankfully didn't react. There have been other instances this week. In my ideal world there would be no racial abuse and no preferential treatment. That needs a lot of work from all groups if it's ever to become a reality.

Absolutely, I live in a small city with a large indigenous population & I have copped the white c*** more than once as have my family & friends, most times it happens in full view of numerous people, ie shopping centre, pub, park, beach, local footy etc

I am also an employer with 4 indigenous employees & on a board of a NFP that employs about 60 indigenous trainees, so I am reasonably qualified to give an opinion

Two examples from this week.

Gollywog made some smart response in to my anecdote about Aboriginal kids making a point to eat black jelly beans in front of us and trampling white ones into the ground while making very derogatory comments. That wouldn't be tolerated if the situation was reversed. Fact is the kids were a similar age to the girl who made the ape comment that has plenty up in arms about. In my opinion neither behaviours were acceptable.

On 7 news this week Nathan Lovett Murray's family (I think his Dad but not 100%) said to reporters you white fellas need to learn respect. I can imagine the furore if the person who said it was told told you black fellas need to learn respect. Not a ripple of response in this example but it would have gone through the roof if the situation was reversed. How can things like that be condoned from one group but not another?

I'm actually quite surprised to find out today that some think Aboriginals need special treatment in regard to racism. I don't see how it's acceptable from anyone. As long as it's there is always going to be a problem.

Exactly. I am gob smacked anyone could think otherwise yet I'm the one being accused of being racist. The mind boggles.

Yep Leysy. Just read up until your post and cannot believe the ignorance of many of the posters. Long way to go and I am not sure how their children will learn if this is the opinions of their parents!

Must say I have racially vilified people before but I grew up. Something many on this thread could!

I'd appreciate people reporting posts that contain racial vilification. It is not acceptable and won't be tolerated on this forum.

My point was I racially vilified people when I was young and naive. I grew up, got an education and now understand what racism truely is. Unfortunately based on their posts many on this thread don't!

Why is the term 'black fella' ok to be used? And by those declaring that racism is rampant? Surely double standards, hypocrisy at work there, isn't it?
I can understand why some people get offended when they get referred to by their race, ethnicity, or whatever. I copped it at school, still do to a tiny extent these days. It doesn't bother me, but that's me. If someone is offended by it, that's their perogotive, but to find racism in every little thing that's said or done is just stupid. Yes, there are racists around, of all races. Yes, sometimes people make stupid, off the cuff remarks. That doesn't make them racists.
This is getting like the McCarthyism era of the 50's. It's ridiculous. Sure, name and shame the hard core idiots, but don't try and dissect everything that people say to try and find something there that isn't.
An example. One of my best friends is. like me, from a Mediterranean background. We worked at the same place for a decade. Whenever he didn't get a promotion, he'd cry racism. Whenever he didn't get his way, he'd say it was because of his ethnicity. This despite the fact that most of the bosses were from a similar background to us. The fact was, he is an 'in your type of guy', a lot of people didn't appreciate it. He couldn't see it, even after I pointed it out repeatedly.
I guess people want to see what they want to see .
Personally, I don't care what race, religion, sexual persuasion or whatever, people are. I treat them as I want to be treated. If they treat me like *smile*, I'll return the attitude. Until they do, I treat anyone as an equal (carlscum supporters excepted)

From Cassell's dictionary of Slang - ape (19th century origin) a derogatory term for black person.

Just for those who are not sure what all the fuss is about.

Harry O Brien is the Tom Warehouse of the AFL !! Thinks he is Gandhi! Please disappear cheese knob

yep, I lived in Alice Springs for many years. I have also lived and worked in Indigenous communities and have been sworn at, racially abused and threatened.
I havent however ever been refused service based on my colour, had my opinion been ignored my medical staff based on my colour, been questioned by police or harassed by security based on my colour, had constant negative assumptions thought about me based on my colour, been ignored by people in positions of power based on my colour, assumed to be a 'drunk' based on my colour. i could go on but i think you get the point.

and yes rosy racial abuse is wrong no matter which way it goes.

Sorry havent answered Streak. Am not going to go back & quote & get involved, but posters telling Adam Goodes to grow up, labelling him a bully amongst others says a fair bit to leysy.

Have just sat down after a long hard day to have dinner and watched AFL360 that the wife records for me and have almost had enough of the circus this week. I haven't been over the previous posts in this thread so if I repeat anything that has already been posted, I also apologise in advance if I offend anyone but this is my view for what its worth.

The girl that called Goode's an ape was in the wrong, but certainly didn't deserve what she copped, hopefully she learns from it though and doesn't do it again, if she does than she deserves what she cops. If it was an adult then throw the book at them but a 13 probably doesn't comprehend what the ramifications are of using such language. The most disappointing thing about her is she was at the footy with adults (presuming family members) and they let her get carted out of the G by herself, if that was my child / family member / friend Id be walking out hand in hand, might tell us something about the upbringing. Now to Goode's, if he gets that upset by being called a name by a 13yr old girl to carry on the way he did, he might have some issues himself. I don't blame him for being annoyed or upset by the comment but to say he couldn't stay on the ground and to carry on the way he did , to me its a bit rich.

Eddie today, my oh my, what a goose. No other way to put it but this guys needs a rest, he thinks he is bullet proof and can get away with anything, to me today proved that his ego far outweighs his common courtesy. I have seen / been involved in 2 incidents with this bloke that would tell you the person you see in real life is nothing like the person you see in the public eye, deserves what he cops in my book. As for Harry Obrien, if he thinks that this country is a "National Disgrace" or the way this country handles racism is a "National Disgrace", then maybe you are part of the problem, maybe you are a disgrace on this matter, maybe if this county was a disgrace on racism then your family and others would not have been welcomed here in the first place.

Bottom line for me guys, I don't have a racist bone in my body. My family goes back to the convicts, I married into a European family, I have mates from all around the world, most of my clients are from all around the world, I have employed people from all around the world, my brother in law employs indigenous people and I have spent heaps of time with them and I'm sure plenty on here are in a similar boat. I just don't understand how someone like Anthony Mundine can call white Australians thieves and bag white Australians and not a single word from anyone that is currently jumping up and down, is that not racism?? Why do indigenous people need their own flag??Aren't we all Australians?? I personally think that this country is one of the most tolerant in the world and I'm sick of hearing people taking pot shots when it suits. It doesn't matter where your from, what color you are, what religion you are, what sex you are etc etc, good people are good people and bad ones are bad.

I dare anyone that wants to challenge this country on racism, human rights or any other matter along those lines to pack up and go to another country and try the same crap on and see how far they get, that's not to say we are perfect but sometimes we all to need to take a deep breath before we speak. To all Australians that are racist (no matter what skin color you are) GROW UP!! To all Indigenous people that blame the white man for what happened 200 years ago?? GET OVER IT!! You are the people that are supposed to lead the way for the next generation to be proud of your heritage as all people are but to understand that that was a long time ago, its time to work together and move on no matter what field.

I hope that doesn't offend anyone and makes a some sense....

Peculiar wasn't it. The Collingwood PR machine in full swing. O'Brien seems like a nice bloke with his heart in the right place, but he's downright painful to listen to for more than a couple of minutes. Get to the point, Harry!

I would've forgiven McGuire easily enough without this TV appearance. I don't think it did very much to help his cause. He was extremely awkward (again) in explaining himself, and I don't think his pride allowed him to show an appropriate level of contrition. A little bit cringeworthy.
