Re: Adam Goodes

So the new face of racism is no longer a 13 year old.

For that I am glad of, she did the wrong thing on the weekend, but her punishment of being all over the news didn't fit the crime for what a child needs to experience. there was some good and bad handling of the situation of how it did stand, but Eddie Geez, what has he done.

Eddies comments are far far worse considering his involvement in the situation already.

I hope the girl is left alone now.

Will Eddie get sent on the outback tour? Or is that reserved for hardcore racists like Dipper?

Oh yeah Dipper's one.....geez....I wonder when 'Aussie' or 'Aus' will become a racist comment.

Feel sorry for Eddie. He is a good man, who has been a leader in improving race relations.

We all have "foot in mouth" moments. I bet even Adam Goodes has regretted some things that he has said. The brain is a funny thing and sometimes the words that come out are exactly the ones that you wished to avoid. I have called my daughters' boyfriends by former boyfriend names, even when I have tried to drill myself to get it right.

Probably a poor example, and one which drew little sympathy, but I honestly believe that Tony Abbott did not deliberately use those NO-NO words, "died with shame" shortly after the furore with Allan Jones. TA is not that stupid and not that cruel (and I am not a fan of his).

We need to be a bit more forgiving and accept apologies or else race relations will just deteriorate. Some empathy wouldn't hurt.

So if referring to him as ape wasn't racist why do you think she yelled it out to the Aboriginal guy?

Because he is 6 feet 4, 100 kilograms and has a thick beard. Here is a question for you? Before this media circus if you were sitting in a crowd near a 13 year old girl and you turned your head and heard her yell, 'kick the ball you ape', whom would you have assumed that she was referring to? An Aboriginal, or a big hairy and most likely physically unattractive footballer? I can tell you that 90 percent plus of reasonable people would have assumed the latter. And guess what that's what Adam Goodes is (although he probably thinks he is an oil painting).

Ok here is another one for you. On the same level when Denis Pagan said you need a gorilla to play on a gorilla, would you and the majority of the football public have assumed when you heard it he meant you need a big tall thickset heavy guy to play on a big tall thickset heavy guy, or that he meant that you need an aboriginal to play on an aboriginal?

Again if it wasn't for the effect this has no doubt been having on that poor child it would all be laughable.

Agree totally, but a bit of humility is long overdue for Eddie.

You know listening to it I could almost imagine the delivery being something like Mick Molloy would say because Mick tends to push the envelope.

I think the disappointing thing for someone like Ed in his position was that he even thought of it in the first place let along spoke it out loud.

I don't think Ed is racist just as I didn't think Rex was when he said his gaff while calling the footy about Leon Davis, but for some reason I just knew he would come out being defensive about it in the press conference. He's just made a bad situation worse with that press conference.

I share these sentiments. I can't help but feel people (journos, commentators, Sydney football club presidents, public) have taken the opportunity to participate in Whack-an-Eddie day. Whilst his comments are undeniably inappropriate, unacceptable and unhelpful, I'll take him for his word that they were misspoken ramblings. He has a pretty good track record.

This is just a personal observation, but if Adam Goodes can't accept Eddie for his word in this instance then he lacks the true understanding of judging everything and everyone on their merits.

Why don't you think Eddie is racist? So it's okay for Eddie (and his radio gang) to push the line that the 13 year old girl was racist despite the fact that she denied there was any racist intent (and half this stupid nation reading more into it than then there probably is) but Eddie the idiot can say what he wants and people continue to make excuses for him.

You can all go and get stuffed. Eddie is a moron and I hope he reads this.

As for Adam Goodes, this is for you. When you get run down by a car in the street and butchered to death, then you can complain. Called an 'ape'. Get over it.

Where are the free white pointy hats ? ::)

Please explain? On face value that shapes up as the most racist comment on this thread.

Since the AFL has established its reconciliation based stance on racism its been documented many times that whether a remark is racist or not is largely in the eyes of the person the remark is directed at because it comes down to how it effects them.

Post of the thread for mine.
I'm not sure why someone takes such offence to someone being racially offended but unless you have walked in their shoes, your opinion matters little.

IanG and TOO,

I disagree.

The intent of the person making then remark has to be taken into consideration. If that person says the remark was honestly not racially motivated and that the recipients took the remark the wrong way, then that has to be accepted.

But that wouldn't make for a newsworthy article, would it?

I find it quite bizarre. Adam said he's copped similar taunts by players on the ground but he obviously hasn't reacted in the same way or chosen to take a stance so by that definition it's probably not racist. A 13 year old girl, possibly in ignorance, makes the same statement and he takes a very public stand showing how upset he is so by definition it's racist. Got me beat.

Exactly Rosy.

I've only ever been to one local footy game for about 20 mins and in that time I saw (and close enough to smell) spectators smoking dope and making comments to players that were highly personal and if I was a player, I would have jumped the fence and punched someone. This put me off footy (as well as the injuries that my co-workers endured at the time). Adam Goodes got off lightly compared to most of the crap I heard in 20 minutes. He gets paid enough to stop acting like a little boy.

Particularly in this case. I question if his reaction would have been the same if an aboriginal had said the same thing from the stands? But of course, non whites can't ever be racist, can they?

Surely Triple M will dismiss Maguire. I have said my piece on the issue between Goodes and the 13 year old girl so I won't repeat it all again but I will give Goodes the concession that he at least admitted she was naive. Maguire does not get that same leeway hell I bet that the 13 year old girl also knows now enough to have made the connection between Goodes and King Kong just stupid and in this instance I do not blame Goodes if he doesn't accept Eddies apology.

i have no idea whether the girl meant to racially abuse Goodes, but i can understand why he would be upset.
i doubt Eddie had racist intention when he said what he said. he was stupid to say it, but he would have been even more stupid if he thought about then still said it.

but, i hope all the discussion about it doesnt hide the fact that racism is alive and well in this country, and Indigenous Australians and certain other ethic groups cop it regularly/
