Rance

I dont think Rance will make it, his awareness around the ball is extremely poor.Something you cant really teach

Yeah - reminds me a bit of Raines when he's got the ball. Panicks, has no awareness, and low agility.

Needs to slow down a bit and stop trying to do everything at 100mph. Doesnt give himself a chance to think his way through things.

For those who saw him as a junior, did he always run like he could fall face first at any minute?

Stand up straight.

Composure and skill isn't easily taught. Tayte Pears looks like a certified gun compared to Rance at the moment. Not hopeful.

Thie thing I find with Rance that doesn't feel me with confidence is I don't know what his strength is.
What I mean by this is, take Post - great hands, Vickery - footy smarts, good skills, Cotchin - good mover, reads play well. With Rance I just don't see his positive. He's courageous I acknowledge that, but as far as footy skills/smarts go I struggle to see this in him.
He's young & developing so I'm nothing saying he's a complete dud, I just am unsure what he is going to develop into. What's his base? What is the thing that he needs to develop to become a complete player? I would say right now his base is very raw & he needs to really work on every single aspect of his game as much as any other aspect. He doesn't have a stand out part of his game.
Fingers crossed, he has the physique, lets hope he can develop the rest (all) of his game.

in rance defence it is his second year and what 12th game.
when we have gotten rid of all the other duds who have been there at least 4 years and prooved nothing then you can say lets now also get rid of rance.
plenty way ahead of him in the delist line. and thats a fact like it or not!! so to say delist/trade now is really ludicrous....

jesus help us, can we stop picking up the same type of players we de-list, isnt raines rance's brother or even looks like torney. can this guy go and see a doctor and get his back straighten up. the hunchback of notre dame. stand up straight!!! then you wont fall over so many times. he is always in the half bent over position, which makes his opponent in the prime position to win the ball.

Pears Hurley and Post are all younger than Rance. I think Pears is still only 18.

Rance has had a full year of VFL before debut.

Pears and Post went later in the draft than Rance. Hurley is a gun.

In retrospect Pears and Ward at 18 and 19 was the way to go.
pears went at 23 post at 26.

ive said this before rance at junior level was a lovely mover across the ground.playing at swans he was a standout among some very good juniors. in the main used the ball by foot okay an pretty good in the air.. hes always been more of a running type but to me his development has to be in the area of taking on and stopping kpps.

pears to me was always made for fb. nice big frame and quick. reminded me of nathan brown.

personally i think it amazing that such young talls are getting so many regular games.

so far what ive seen of rance at richmond i have concerns.especially decision making and footskills. no ecuses for him the bells are ringing but it makes me wonder how much being surrounded by duds affects these things.
atm to me his development would be better spent at coburg playing at chb on kpps.

to me based on what i saw of them as juniors and our list structure that draft should have been rance at 18 and pears at 19. said as much at the time. imay hve to concede i got rance wrong in time but sheesh hes in just his 2nd yr and played a dozen odd games. surely we need to be just a little more patient than what we have shown on this thread.

finally rance aside we have the shortest smallest least skilled backline in the entire comp.and people consider it one of our strengths.

Play him forward.
He is under size and has poor skills for a defender.

If a side wanted him for a 1st round pick or a very young victorian player i would take it.

rance has some good qualities, attack on the footy, finds it well, fairly clean hands , however he has some rough edges that need some work if he is to progress...his first instinct is a woirry, often playing on into trouble...poor decision in many cases and his contested work in the air is poor...Both of these areas can be developed with some expereince...hopefully he is a willing worker and shows some signs of progress in the off season...this is a step that juniors that have been able to get away on playing on instinct take a mlittle time to adapt...Rodan to now edwards are a couple that come to mind, that earlier on were ALWAYS nabbed as they didnt know when to hold and when to fold...hopefully Rance pushes thry as he his attack on the footy and agility is a real asset and sets the tone/standard for those around him :clap

So would I.
I really fear that he just doesn't have the real footy smarts - and that if you've never got them - you'll never get them. You can have all the braveness and enthusiasm in the world - but it's not enough.

To me this is the relevant point. Rance as some real work to do on his decision making however it is being highlighted as he is playing either as a defensive mid of on the HBF. Both decisions require quick instinctive decisions and clean skills.

I have said it before but he needs to be played as a key back. Whether it is at Coburg or for the Tiges does not matter at this point. I think if he is going to be a solid AFL player it will be as a key defender and it should be his defensive skills that are focussed on.

For mine he needs to get to at least 95 kegs and develop some speed off the mark.

He started on Cloke yesterday which was good to see but got shifted as it went pear shaped.

What would have happened if he had of been left on Cloke?

Cloke might have snagged a couple more goals, but perhaps Rance might have been able to fight back.

There is one thing for sure though, chasing Dane Swan around the middle did nothing for his development as a key back.
