PRE Phantom Draft 2012

The Bummers were tossing up between a couple here but decided to go with the sexier pick: Marvin Warrell. BOG in WAFL colts grand final with 23 touches and 3 goals. Quick, skillful, hard tackler and hard to tackle. Bit of Jimmy Krakouer about him and another to help us shame the Tigs on Dreamtime night. What the hell are those squiggles on your sash, cuz?

Like him a lot Spook. Wouldn't shock me if we took the punt on him.

righto....

Pick 36. Carlton – Michael Close (196cm 84kg) North Ballarat Rebels

Michael Close is a strong and competitive key forward with a good kick and great endurance (personal-best 15.6 beep test).

Mick – the new coach that is - said he likes a forward who can also ruck, (it doesn't matter if we've already got three ruckmen who can go forward, he said) and while early days he may be used to plug our defence we hope in Michael Close we’ve found him.

I will take Jesse Lonergan as a big body mid who may be able to play some football next year in a must win now team. He is also a hyper good athlete who had a lot of injuries last year so has room for improvement. The fact he is a Tasmanian is just a bonus.

Btw I know none else cares, but this is what Jessie said about which player he resembles most:

Dustin Martin – he is a powerful inside midfielder who loves a contested possession and is a massive competitor.

Its OK, Kurtzy, I care.

I wouldn't mind Lonergan either. It looks like this draft is going to be pretty even from about 15-35. We should end up with some likely lads with our three second rounders.

With Pick 37 Fremantle Selects Dean Towers from North Ballarat

Medium midfielder who can break the lines with his speed and agility in traffic and is strong overhead . Mature aged player who had a great year for the Roosters in 2012.

Collingwood use their pick 39 on Tim Sumner, a 187 cm forward cum midfielder from SA. We've approached this draft as an opportunity to retool our forward line in particular and Sumner will be able to give us another speedy option across half forward. He will push into midfield in time. He also allows us to move Alex Fasolo further up the field where we expect a Dayne Beams style improvement.

Thanks mate.

The more I think about Longeran the more I like him. He hasn’t got a lot of the ball at a junior level, but he’s hard at it, a tackling machine and can kick a goal. I could see him complementing nicely our other young mids as we lack a true coal face type player. Little bit too much silk and not enough grunt when Tucky retires.

But he’ll be gone before our pick most likely.

Anytime you can get the next Stevie Johnson you take him.
