Possible fine for Dusty

The definition of a "tradition" is for the action to be repeated over a significant period of time. That's what makes it a tradition.

That's not necessarily correct. A tradition doesn't need to stand the test of time to be a tradition. New or manufactured traditions can happen all the time.

Dictionary definition..................

Noun.
the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way

just sayin'

That's the traditional definition, the non-traditional allows for manufactured traditions to be created.

Am I the only one who thinks its weird having a philosophical discussion on the concept of tradition on the thread about Dusty giving the up yours to some feral Collingwood supporters?

No

This discussion has gone on so long theres a serious danger of it becoming a PRE tradition

Outrage at the PC Brigade and the PC Police has been a long standing PRE tradition thank you very much.

I though the offseason conspiracy theory thread was a pre tradition

Manufactured tradition. Yep I'm comfortable with that term in regards to what Goodes and Jetta did. Still don't think it makes one iota of difference in regards to it being appropriate mid-game on the footy field just the same.

Booing players who get in others' faces is traditional too. I guess being sooky lala and taking your footy to go home when people react to negative actions is traditional too. As is the AFL's discrimination when it comes to player behaviour towards supporters. Everything can be traditional if we want it to be. Doesn't mean too much just the same.

can i clarify, did security become involved cos Goodes performed a traditional dance, or because people yelled racist abuse at him?
my memory, which may be incorrect, tells me security intervened and ejected a west coast fan who yelled racial abuse.

i know this post was probably missed in the riveting toing and froing, but can anyone answer this query?

A tradition is a belief or behavior passed down within a group or society with symbolic meaning or special significance with origins in the past.[1][2] Common examples include holidays or impractical but socially meaningful clothes (like lawyer wigs or military officer spurs), but the idea has also been applied to social norms such as greetings. Traditions can persist and evolve for thousands of years—the word "tradition" itself derives from the Latin tradere or traderer literally meaning to transmit, to hand over, to give for safekeeping. While it is commonly assumed that traditions have ancient history, many traditions have been invented on purpose, whether that be political or cultural, over short periods of time. Certain scholarly fields, such as anthropology and biology, have adapted the term "tradition," defining it more precisely than its conventional use in order to facilitate scholarly discourse.

I don't know about racist abuse. Maybe they called out non-racist insults. Maybe they booed him. Whatever the unrest was it followed Adam's gesticulating towards the area so it's fair (imo) to assume it was a result of his actions.

Colllingwood v Essendon on ANZAC Day seems a recent fabricated tradition.

yep. someone was ejected for yelling "get back to the zoo". of course he claims it was an innocent comment.

so security didnt intervene cos of what Goodes did. They intervened because the same people who were innocently booing Goodes were also making innocent racist remarks.

actually ill correct myself. these comments were made at the eagles game, which preceded Jetta's actions.

some fans were ejected at the Blooze game but i cant find why.
