Pick 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Wines, Wines and more Wines.

My second son was born 5 weeks ago. We named him Oliver so would be very happy if we got Wines considering the wife wouldn't go for Trent or Jack!

Nick Graham - There's a lot going for Graham, he's a Morrish medal winner, a tackling machine, a super consistent performer and perhaps more importantly, a big game player...

From a Richmond perspective, I think he would be a very handy addition to the club. Not with our first pick, but certainly with a second round selection. I still think he's a chance to slide, and I think he's the type of player who would slot into Hardwick's gameplan with relative ease.

You make a compelling case wooly bully - plus, it's time we got someone from the Graham clan down to the club ...

We've had one, his name was Mark :-\

if we take grundy, what do we do about maric and TV? we cant play all 3 in the one side. i think maric has to be first ruck, so assuming this we would be leaving a first round draft pick (TV or grundy) to play ressies, or rotating them etc etc.
i think it would be much wiser to pick a gun mid who can fit in and play every game, rather than get grundy who unless injury or form will be swapping in and out of the side....

Ditto. Most clubs these days choose to field only one true ruck, many on here are suggesting we find a way to fit 3 into the team. So do we seriously use a top 10 pick on a kid that will spend the next 5 years at Coburg? A huge waste of resources to me. And with several clubs below us desperate for a quality ruck, if he is really that good what would he be doing still around at our pick.

And in terms of his true ability, we have heard about how weak this draft is for rucks, who has he beaten to prove his real worth? Can he take the next step? I'm not convinced. At least Vickery went head to head with Nic Nat in his year so we knew he could ruck.

I am going out on a limb here and saying we won't take Grundy if he is still there. I've seen the Roos, Carlton and Freo recently have 3 fit AFL quality ruckmen, I have yet to see a team find a way to use them all in the same team to great effect.

Really like Nick Graham, don't think he'll be available at our 2nd rounders though. Shame. Reckon he'll go to Sydney at 23(?) or the Saints at 25/26

hey Stylo I listed some players earlier in the thread -

Any you think might make it into our grasp ?

Dayle Garlett -Injury concerns aside, if there's one player in the draft pool who represents a classical boom/bust scenario it's Dayle Garlett. His misdemeanors off the field have consumed an awful lot of media space and for the most part, have distracted from his rather impressive deeds on the football field. Even as far back as last year, Garlett was being talked about as a likely candidate for the mini-draft, and one suspects that had he had a clean sheet on the behaviour front, then he would have been mentioned in the same breath as Brad Crouch. Now, without spending too much time on the personal issues, some of Garlett's faux pas' include being turfed out of the AIS, being late to training, not playing to team rules and being caught out on the town boozing. All in all, one might say a recipe for disaster and reason enough to bypass him with a first round pick.

The sad part of the Garlett saga is that he's an immensely talented footballer and his record speaks for itself. In the carnival this year, he averaged 19 possessions a game, was selected in the AA team and played some electrifying football in the process. His skill set is a tantalising prospect for recruiters because not only is he your classic line breaker, but his inside game is developed enough for him to become a genuine top tier mid if he chooses to apply himself. Then there's the the freakish goal scoring ability which you simply can't teach, it's the x-factor rolled into something approaching a complete package.

So the million dollar question is how far will Garlett slide and is he cut out for the demands of professional football? The answer to the first question is he will probably find himself somewhere in the 15-25 bracket, and will probably end up at a club that has the luxury of numerous picks in the first round. Given that GWS look like rolling the dice with Menzel, I highly doubt they'll take another risk with Garlett. That leaves Collingwood in a strong position to pounce, if not then he could himself at Adelaide or possibly Sydney.

Given that Garlett represents something that is in short supply at Tigerland, it would seem a bit of a tragedy that he's pretty much failed the character test in contrast to players like Conca and Ellis. Whilst I can fully understand the philosophy behind it, I can also see Garlett thriving at a club with a strong culture. I'd like to think that we also have that culture, but history suggests otherwise and the recent developments with Martin only add to that reputation. Good luck to whoever lands Dayle Garlett because there's every chance he will turn out to be the steal of the draft.

If Garlett is as talented as all the pundits say and the Bulldogs, Port and Brisbane overlook him, I say 'pick him' !

So i'm guessing with pick 9 we'd like one of these blokes:

Lachie Whitfield, Jimmy Toumpas, Brodie Grundy, Jonathon O’Rourke, Lachie Plowman, Ollie Wines, Jackson Macrae, Sam Mayes, Troy Menzel.

and then we'd be hoping to get at least one of these blokes:

Tom Clurey, Kristian Jaksch, Tim Membrey, Josh Simpson, Jake Stringer, Nick Vlastuin, Rory Atkins, Sam Colquhoun, Dayle Garlett, Taylor Garner,
Nick Graham, Nathan Hrovat, Ben Kennedy, Jesse Lonergan, Kamdyn McIntosh, Mason Shaw, Tanner Smith, Dean Towers, Nathan Wright,

Otherwise we'll take a couple of these fellas:

Cameron Banfield, Andrew Boston, Tim Broomhead, Adam Carter, Michael Close, Aidan Corr, Darcy Fort, Jarrod Lienert, Sean Lynch,
Liam McBean, Tim O’Brien, Marco Paparone, Jason Pongracic, Nick Rodda, Josh Scott, Laine Wilkins, Patrick Wilson.

How does that sound ?

Of the 2nd batch of names there the ones possibly available at our 2nd pick IMO:

Atkins, McIntosh, Towers, Wright and Maybe Graham, though all of them could go earlier. Membrey is an outside chance too IMO, slim though.

Most of the 3rd batch should be available at our 2nd rounders, a few might make it to 43:

Fort, Lynch, Lienert, O'Brien, Paparone, Rodda, Scott, Wilson

I'd like to see us take Vlastuin at 9, Wright at 32, Atkins at 34 and someone like Boston at 43.

Towers tested well at the combine but there are questions over his decision making and in game pace from what I've heard, not sure he'll go that early

Yeah, I was told Isaac Smith wouldn't go in the first 2-3 rounds when I floated it a couple of years back. He went at 19.

Don't mean to frighten everyone, however, Vlastuin is the 2nd coming of Brock McLean. Probably has a little more penertration in his kicking, however, similar athletic capability. Guess who drafted Brock at a reasonable reach at No.5?

Get me Mayes, Macrae or Plowman please Francis

McLean is a proven match winner.
