Pick 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

Streak said:
That highligh of Grundy on the previous page was abysmal. OK, took a mark, though not real cleanly, then missed from 35m with what looked like a very average kicking action.

Streak on the AFL website the highlights package is good, 3 mins 18 secs...on YouTube that's all there was....

There are 4 players who I would be content with using pick 9 on.

Grundy
Menzel
Vlastuin
Macrae

Simply because all have the capability of being elite in the AFL. I don't want us picking up a reliable player who will be a B+ type. Grundy will be an absolute gun, he is a cross between Naitanui and Cox. Menzel in my opinion is the best talent of this years pool, (Other than O'Meara + Daniher) and I think he could be the best player from this pool. Vlastuin will thrive in our midfield and could be as good as Selwood or Swallow. With Macrae, the sky is his limit, just needs to develop an inside game.

I would add one other- Garner. The Sidebottom of this draft. (Or the Beams if he slips - how far could he slip, Watchers?)

What about Grundy? If he is available at 9, do people see him being worth selecting there or continue the trend of trading for a ruckman when required. Is he too good to pass up, ie; give our mids constant first use like cox/sandi/nicnat.

I see the way the WC mids get the ball delivered on a plate and am envious. Could Grundy provide this for our mids going forward?

I'd like to know if Grundy is a 2-3...5 year wait before he blossoms? If its gonna be 5 years pass.

Grundy would be just about ready to come in next year and play 2nd ruck, resting forward. He's already 100 kegs and has been playing against men in the SANFL this year so he's not completely raw. He would be an absolute steal at 9, between he and Vickery our ruck stocks would be sorted for the next decade. Vickery/Grundy is a damn good combination.

I'd be pleased whoever we get, the talent in this draft is amazing. I will be happy if we get Garner, Vlaustin, Macrae, Stringer, Menzel, Grundy, Wines, Kennedy, Garlett, Colquhoun, Plowman, Mayes, Jaksch. They are all that good

Emma Quayle was on SEN yesterday morning discussing the draft, she had some pretty interesting thoughts:

•GWS will select: (1) Whitfield, (2) Toumpas, (3) Menzel
•Grundy will slide as far as Richmond's selection (Pick #9).
•Wines a certainty to be picked up by Melbourne at Pick #4.
•Menzel is her pick to be the best player in the draft, has the ability to break games open and turn them on their head, and that will appeal to GWS, especially given their number of picks, they can afford to take a risk given his injuries

Someone asked her on twitter about 30 minutes ago whether he's any chance of sliding and she said it's only very slim, can't see him getting past Port.

FORMER Adelaide recruiter Matthew Rendell says young South Australian ruckman Brodie Grundy will be ready to step up to AFL level next year.

Grundy is shaping as a likely top-10 pick in this year's draft on the back of stellar performances for his state in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Speaking on Channel 9's TAC Cup Future Stars program, Rendell, who has been mentoring the young ruckman in his role with the state team, called Grundy a match-winner.

"He's a really competitive ruckman and as a bottom-ager last year I reckon he won two games for South Australia by himself," Rendell said.

"Someone's going to get a beauty there.

if we take grundy, what do we do about maric and TV? we cant play all 3 in the one side. i think maric has to be first ruck, so assuming this we would be leaving a first round draft pick (TV or grundy) to play ressies, or rotating them etc etc.
i think it would be much wiser to pick a gun mid who can fit in and play every game, rather than get grundy who unless injury or form will be swapping in and out of the side....

If Menzel or Mayes are still on the board when its Ports turn to pick then I can see them overlooking Grundy.

Didn't Frank say to somebody a few weeks ago while he was taking the bins out or something "Victorian, solid body".

If Melbourne loses pick 4, Wines could be on the board. Who would you pic, Watchers? Wines, Vlastuin, Macrae, Garner or Mayes?

1. Whitfield
2. Toumpas
3. Menzel
4. Stringer
5. O'Rourke
6. Grundy
7. Jaksch/Plowman
8. Wines/Vlastuin/Macrae/Garner/Mayes

Vlastuin to my limited exposure is like a young Kane Johnson, who played well in premierships in his first two years and was a good solid player without being a star. Menzel is the star of the ones we dare hope for, but it's unlikely. Ditto Stringer. I think Macrae is more Sidebottom than Pendlebury. Garner like a taller Porplyzia/Chapman with a Bartel possibilities. Is Mayes a Morton? (With no left foot?-that's only half a Morton!) Is that harsh? Wines-Bartel maybe?

Wines? Or Garner?

Grundy's a kid, like nearly all kids drafted and especailly tall ones, he's going to take a few years to develop. Maybe a handfull of cameos year one, some backup games year two. Year three onwards, depending on how well he matures and develops, he starts to take on a senior role.
Three years time the big Eevan will be thirty and probably fading, would be about the right time to have a shiny bright just run in behemoth waiting in the wings.

Nick Graham - There's a lot going for Graham, he's a Morrish medal winner, a tackling machine, a super consistent performer and perhaps more importantly, a big game player. Graham's performance in the TAC grand final was nearly enough to see Gippsland Power over the line and would have greatly impressed most of the recruiters who attended. In some ways, the finale to the TAC cup is one of the best barometers of a player's worth, and usually elevates players to top ten status. Names like Thomas, Sidebottom and Greene all rocketed up the charts off the back of some eye catching performances.

So where will he land and is he a chance to be available at our second pick? In my opinion, quite possibly. Firstly, he's an unfashionable type that tends to drift down the order as players with more bells and whistles get snapped up. He's your Luke Parker, Andrew Swallow or Tom Rockliff type, a player who's done just about everything right but somebody whose perceived shortcomings might see him slip down the order.

Given that Graham has averaged 25 possessions a game, 6 tackles and has been instrumental in getting his club into the grand final, one might ask why he's a second round candidate and not a top ten prospect like Vlastuin. The answer to that probably lies in the fact that he can be wastful with his kicking from time to time and this is reflected in his kicking efficiency statistics playing for the Power. It's not an issue that has plagued him all season, but if one was to examine his off-days, then you would find a kicking effciency somewhere in the 30-50% range. Understandably, this needs to be seen in the context of his role as an inside midfielder, but I still feel there's some room for improvement just the same.

Just how this effects his draft position will be interesting to see, I'm reminded of what I call the 'Dahlhaus Effect', and that is something along the lines of analysing each and every possession and determining the level of pressure being applied as the player disposes of the ball. Given that Luke had to submit his own match footage in order to dispel the myth of wastefulness, I just wonder how closely a guy like Graham will be scrutinised.

From a Richmond perspective, I think he would be a very handy addition to the club. Not with our first pick, but certainly with a second round selection. I still think he's a chance to slide, and I think he's the type of player who would slot into Hardwick's gameplan with relative ease.

So i'm guessing with pick 9 we'd like one of these blokes:

Lachie Whitfield, Jimmy Toumpas, Brodie Grundy, Jonathon O’Rourke, Lachie Plowman, Ollie Wines, Jackson Macrae, Sam Mayes, Troy Menzel.

and then we'd be hoping to get at least one of these blokes:

Tom Clurey, Kristian Jaksch, Tim Membrey, Josh Simpson, Jake Stringer, Nick Vlastuin, Rory Atkins, Sam Colquhoun, Dayle Garlett, Taylor Garner,
Nick Graham, Nathan Hrovat, Ben Kennedy, Jesse Lonergan, Kamdyn McIntosh, Mason Shaw, Tanner Smith, Dean Towers, Nathan Wright,

Otherwise we'll take a couple of these fellas:

Cameron Banfield, Andrew Boston, Tim Broomhead, Adam Carter, Michael Close, Aidan Corr, Darcy Fort, Jarrod Lienert, Sean Lynch,
Liam McBean, Tim O’Brien, Marco Paparone, Jason Pongracic, Nick Rodda, Josh Scott, Laine Wilkins, Patrick Wilson.

How does that sound ?
