Pick 9 ND 2012 – Who should we pick?

I haven't seen the combine results but maybe he tested poorly there?

Anyway I agree we need inside midfield depth but that can be found later in the draft (Pongracic, Hrovat, Lonergan etc.). If we have a chance to grab Mayes we should IMO. He reminds me of Ryan Griffin in the early stages of his career. He'll be a midfielder eventually but will start off on a HFF developing as a pinch hitting mid. The kid is all class.

He didn't test at the Combine. Had a family funeral.

I think it's a myth to be honest. He got an injury at the start of the season and as a result played a bit behind the ball and through the Champs.

Automatically people link that with not having a tank.

I've seen him play about ten times this season and not once has he struggled to run out a game. In fact, I've always got the impression he was one of the fittest blokes out there.

It seems Hrovat and Lonergan won't be at our second round picks.

The problem with Pongracic, from what I've seen, is his kicking. You can't compare it to Vlastuin's. If you want one of the best kicks in the draft, you have to pay.

I'm on the bandwagon to take to 3 midfielders with our first 3 picks. We need them desperately. The only one we have coming through Coburg is Matt Arnot.

This is all academic anyway, I don't think Mayes will be around at 9.

Is McRae reaaaalllly anything like Pendlebury ??? Is he pure silk ? If so me likes

A little. I still have doubts over the penetration of his kicking. Struggles over 40 or so meters. Shorter than that, he's fine. Handballing through traffic and space awareness is his major strength. Can get out of many sticky situations and find a target.

At this stage I think he's very much outside. He'll develop his inside game, but in that regard Pendlebury is much superior.

Yep spot on. He also has that Pendleburyesque ability to slow things down and handle pressure like it's nothing. Composure in spades.

What are people's thoughts on Viney re-entering the draft pool, should we look at him if he's there?

If Viney was back in the pool is there a chance that Wines may still be available at pick 8??

We need quality inside midfielders. As much as I like Mayes, he isn't a fit.

Vlastuin is. Stringer is. Grundy is, if he's available as he also fills a list need.

Take out Nathan Foley, Trent Cotchin and Shane Tuck we don't have much else.

In an ideal world, Reece Conca, Brandon Ellis, Brett Deledio, Shaun Grigg and Dustin Martin are our recievers.

We need quality clearance players. We have have a major gap in that area aged between 18-21. It showed through our lack of midfield depth at Coburg.

We have an awesome top 8 or so, but then it drops off. Matt White was in the centre late in the year FFS. We can't have that.

Agree with all that.
Think FJ and the brains trust do too, which is why we are so consistently linked with Vlastuin.
So given you have seen plenty of him, you'd be happy wiuth that outcome at pick 9?

Absolutely. Would be over the moon.

Agree. The comparison with Griffin is spot on.

I am also a fan of Stringer who has the potential of filling two needs; inside mid and third tall forward option. He is after all 191cm.
a forward line of Jack, Deledio, Martin, Vickers, Nahas and Stringer would be formidable.

im also a fan of picking up Stringer purely because of his ability to play all over the ground. actauall he has so many more strings to his bow as well

Is Vlas a HBF or a developing mid ? What are his pure strengths ?

Give me the midfielder any day.

Deledio, Cotchin and Martin can be that class.

If we landed Stringer you can throw him in there too.

I've also seen queries on Vlastuin's apparent lack of endurance. Where have they come from?

Vlastuin is not a midfielder. He has a similar tank to Martin. He will be able to play onball in bursts, however, the pure midfielders will blow him away after running him around for 5mins.

I may be totally wrong , but I don't like the sounds of a drafts quality when the touted number 3 pick is a lumbering ruck who has played the game for 3 years

For pick 9 I've been really interested in Sam Colquhoun, he is a 180cm running defender/mid who averaged about 28 touches for SA in the national champs and seems to me as this years Toby Greene. Last year Greene wasn't the most sought after mid, he was picked behind Coniglio, Tyson, Wingard, Hoskin-Elliot and more. And this year he is still behind Whitfield, Toumpas, Wines, Macrae, O'Rourke.

I wouldn't mind getting Macrae, but he would most like get snapped up by port or someone else

I think racking up possies in the champs and at junior levels does transpose to AFL ie big accumulators in juniors equal that later but it is a rarity for a under accumulator to suddenly get bigger numbers on the big stage. A classic I remember is Danny Meyer who averaged about 15 possies a game in jnrs and same and less in seniors.

Therefore draft one who get plenty of it and uses it well as they are used to ball in hand.

Can someone tell me why Vlas has no tank ? Has he only started playing footy or is he a smoker ?

Seen the guy play? Lumbering is not the right word. More like dominant, agile, smart, skilled. The top end of this draft is as good as any I can remember

No I haven't seen him I must say, just read a few articles on him so no doubt I'm been harsh, just not a fan of drafting rucks early unless they exceptional athletes as well as possessing excellent footy smarts.
