Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

I noticed after one goal kicked against him he looked down st his strapped wrist and appeared to be reading something (I presume something inspirational or notes that he’d written there). Wonder what it was.

I zoomed in using some software,

and it said,

'don't let this *smile* kick any goals'

Anyone else notice he covered the most distance @16.7k. Gotta be a world record for a tortise over a couple of hours ;D
I did, and I recall he did in his first game as well. But I suspect 6 6 6 artificially enhances the number for the guys who have to trudge back to the square every goal.

I love the way Garth goes about his game, a very clever player. He did well on Hogan and Taberner, which helped free up Astbury to play his best game since Rance got injured.

Most distance covered in a game this year for the tigers. How is this possible for a key defender?

Good theory and I'm not sure if you're fully serious with this or not (in explaining his 16.7k's)

Even if the fullback was out beyond the 50m line and had to go back to the goal line for the bounce - and there were 20 goals scored - that only accounts for 1km

:hihi

Love the guy no way he gets dropped.

Can pinch hit in the ruck. Maybe Balta changing with Garth?

Lucky it wasn't a Mother's Day Hawks game. When a goal (or behind) was kicked by the opposition he'd have to jump over the fence, down the hill, across the muddy puddles and retrieve the footy sitting by the housing estate's perimeter fence and return it back to the umpire. Would have added another 2 kilometres.

He rarely gets beaten 1 on 1.

Well thought of at Richmond, they’ve been singing Garth’s praises for the past 18 months.

Getting a good run at it was the problem,he gets his chance now, good luck to the lad,the sort of blue collar type that’s the back bone of a good side.

He was really thrown to the wolves against GWS. Missed all preseason and had played one game from memory. Looked slow.

Completely different player who played on Sunday. Hawks will be another good test.

People have forgotten that Ryan had injury restrictions early and expect him to be perfect first time out after 'ten minutes' of reserve footy

I remember his first VFL game, Rd 1 2017 played in the back pocket

We won by about 30 goals v Noth Ballarat & Garthy ran 15 kms that day

If we can keep him, he will be a rock in defence for years

I like him a lot. Seems a rock solid, no fuss defender. Allows other to do their jobs more expansively.

Kicks like Gaspar!

Nah, kicks more like the krakouer brothers. He doesn't guide / drop the ball down to his boot, he places it low to begin with and holds it there till it's kicked. In effect there is no or very minimal ball drop. It's a fairly safe kicking action
