Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

Ran 16.8km for the game. Next closest was Baker at 15.2km.

That is an amazing stat for a third year kpd
I suspect 6 6 6 distorts this because he is most often the back that goes back to the goal square at the bounces.

Think we've covered this previously. Even if he had to run 100metres to setup in the goal square after EVERY goal (unlikely) that would account for only 1.6km. The distance Garthwaite is running is unbelievable.

Even if 666 affected it (which it doesn't), he's still running it.

5 games, will be very lucky to get to 50.
2 weeks in a row now, the opposition are using him as a pathway to scoring.
Gunston dragged him to goal square and out marked him. Last night whoever he went on destroyed him, firstly Bagley then Langford

It was Ambrose out marked him clearly twice.
Not sure about him yet need more than endurance

Too slow, can’t jump, doesn’t man mark well, not tall enough for KPD. Not sold either, early days still.

He is doing infinitely better than Rance, Grimes or Astbury did at this stage in their careers.

Probably on the appearance true, they weren’t playing with seasoned premiership players though

Rubbish. Once Rance started playing key back you could see he had huge upside. He had the athletic profile, speed, strength and courage in spades. And Grimes was good from the start, just couldn't stay on the park.

He’s only played 7 games... most of what everyone here is criticising him on come down to experience. Give the kid at least another dozen games before you start pulling him apart.

I think you’ve clearly forgotten what early Rance looked like.

Compare Rance first season of playing to Garthwaite this year:

https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?playerStatus1=A&tid1=15&playerStatus2=A&tid2=15&type=A&pid1=2318&pid2=6395&fid1=P&fopt1=2009&fid2=S

Rance looked very good in his first season playing AFL. I remember him being ridiculously fearless. It wasn't until he received that horrific head clash that put him out for quite a while that he looked to struggle with confidence (understandably for a young fella). Probably took a whole season for him to show the same confidence again. I wouldn't put Garthwaite anywhere near Rance's potential ability in his early days. But he does look like a solid defender more in the Astbury mould. He'll be a lock-down defender and if he can end up half as good as Rance it'll be a good career for Garthwaite.

No I haven't. I was on him from very early, he clearly had a heap of plusses. Fans & commentators just focused on the occasional brain fade. Read he early thread pages, many identified his potential real early.

Well when Garth turns in to a solid shut down defender, I look forward to saying that I was on him early.

Let’s not compare him to Rance or Grimes... he’s neither of those players. He’s Astburys replacement.

This. Garthwaites distances covered are not just elite for a defender, they are elite for any type of AFL player full stop. He’s covering Tom Scully like distances circa 2016-2017.

Love this guy - defencive efforts are very good.
Saigon reckons he will play 200+ games for tigers and multiple premiership player. Will be better than Astbury

It’s his height, athleticism, and agility which can’t be modified or taught

Its not mate. Check the boards when Rance was first playing, many were giving him grief. Those sticking it to Garth are a bit far off the mark here.

But yes, my use of the word infinitely was a bit far off the mark as well.

Lucky being a footballer comes down to more than that. He’s an old school defender, which there will always be a place for.

Covered 16.8Km for the game.
More then any other player

Second was Heppell, 15.6Km
