Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

Spent a little bit of time at the centre bounces once Nankervis went off.
Seemed to be Grigg first, then Garth for a bit, then Chol mostly for the rest of the game.

Did okay as a tap ruckman but that was more a result of the ordinary form of Luenburger and the Dons mids amid the dominance of our mids.
Did his job when in defence but didn't stand out.
Mostly seemed to be - clean up the poor Dons delivery and hand off to the rebounding runners of Richmond.

As said - tracking nicely.

Was outsized and beaten by mckernan. Not strong enough yet fot the monster forwards.

At this stage better suited to the 3rd tall forward.

Won’t get many senior games this year, unless grimes is injured a lot.

I like him and think he will be a player long term.

Looks to have done a fair bit of remedial work on his kicking as well. Banged a beautiful 45 to 50 metre pass onto Caddy's tit. Went alright for a youngster in his first senior run, subbing for *smile* n giving a chop out in the ruck.

Loved his post-game interview where his goal is "to keep improving, learning off the best defenders in the league and the best team in the league". Gee that sounds so good, still hard to believe he's talking about the Tigers.

Dimma said he looked like Astbury we he came to the club, so safe to say he is the Astbury cover now to find the Rance cover and we might have 10 years of Tiger Time!

The match was the first time I have been able to watch Ryan's game and he impressed me with his positioning and commitment. Still a little raw but a real prospect. More so than Choi in my opinion

I reckon he will get a seniors game or two this year.

Last year proved that the coaches were happy to make changes to the team regardless of whether they were winning or losing - can't see that approach changing this year.

This is an interesting player. I was very keen on him late in his draft, particularly given our needs.

First. We got our first look at the maturing Garthwaite above VFL level. And we saw how creative his hands are. And quick. Nowhere near enough of it yet but the kid is a smart user. His feet are fine but not quick.

He's a zoning back with a weakness one on one. Not much improvement there but a challenge on the day. We've played him in key defensive slots in the magoos to test and develop his one on one game but he's still a project. He can get touched up. And on Saturday he was slaughtered by McKernan.

First on McKernan. He's a very odd player. He's quick and smart at the air ball. He often looks a ready-made AFL player but then gets exposed and demoted. He outclassed Garthwaite, mostly.

McKernan beat Grimes twice. And Grimes beat him once. Rance took McKernan to school in about ten seconds. (Rance won't tolerate McKernans getting ahead of themselves.)

McKernan beats smaller KPPs. Real KPPs school him. He exposed Garth for size - and smarts at times. And did the same to Grimes a couple of times. McKernan doesn't survive because he eventually gets a tall who flogs him. But Garth and even Grimes at times are in his range.

Back to Garth. His zoning was not bad. He was standing in the hole. But doesn't have the size/athleticism/smarts yet to own it. He is fearless.

Eventually McKernan was dominating him to such an extent that the Bomber decided to take a hanger on him. He misjudged it as Garth took him under it. (Poor percentage from McKernan - the orthodox mark was probably there for the taking.) Garth was in a bit better position for that missed hanger. This was important. Despite getting a hiding Garthwaite not only persevered he improved, if only a little. In the preseason this can get you another gig.

With Garthwaite we're looking for improved ownership of the space in front of and above him. And improved ball winning. One very smart handball a game is nowhere near enough for a zoning back. But 10 touches, 3 marks, 1 contested and 6 1%ers was not bad in 69%TOG.

Defence aside it was good to see Garth get a run in the ruck. Gave him some development time around the ball.

I heard that the club rates him highly and his main feature being his ability to compete one-on-one. Obviously it was not so evident on saturday but he is still a pup.

Apparently was a factor in jake b. being released last year.

Depending on injury I can see Garth playing a role on mid to small forwards while he develops his body strength.

Not physically ready to battle with the beasts just yet.

Very impressive on Saturday. The 'taller version of Grimes' comparisons seem pretty on the mark to me.

I actually think they are both around the same height. Around the 192

Grimes actually 193cm 90kg. Garthwaite 192cm 90kg.
Rance 194cm 94kg. Astbury 195cm 96kg.
Question is whether Garthwaite will ever be big enough for a key post or is he too under sized? Not sure he's quick enough to play on smalls like Grimes does.
Hope Miller is the answer!! 195cm and 94kg already and lightning quick. Play him at F.B. I'd play Balta at 194cm at CHB in the magoos. Back line for the future sorted

that's my concern with him. when i saw him last year in the vfl he looked good playing as a key defender, but unless he has grown (and he may well have) he is going to be giving away considerable size to many key forwards.
likewise i dont think he is quick enough to play as a small. nor is he probably good enough with ball in hand.

he could be another Batchelor, a good defender without a position. or he could have grown that little bit he needs and be our next KPD.

Reckon McKernan's first goal should have been a free to Garf, Jack. Garf nicely in the hole n pretend Corey put one hand in his back, one under his wingpit n just shunted him out of the way for a cheapie. Lot to learn for the young fella, but I reckon he done well overall, considering he would probably have been penciled in for about 30% game time first up.
Both Nank n *smile* out early threw a decent load onto Garf n Cholly, think they both contributed better than expected.

No not ready yet.

I know you see a lot VFL and training, is it physically that he's not ready? We are really missing Broad who gives a good chop out to Rance, Astbury and Grimes.
