Question is whether Garthwaite will ever be big enough for a key post or is he too under sized? Not sure he's quick enough to play on smalls like Grimes does.
Reckon McKernan's first goal should have been a free to Garf, Jack. Garf nicely in the hole n pretend Corey put one hand in his back, one under his wingpit n just shunted him out of the way for a cheapie. Lot to learn for the young fella, but I reckon he done well overall, considering he would probably have been penciled in for about 30% game time first up.Dyer'ere said:This is an interesting player. I was very keen on him late in his draft, particularly given our needs.
First. We got our first look at the maturing Garthwaite above VFL level. And we saw how creative his hands are. And quick. Nowhere near enough of it yet but the kid is a smart user. His feet are fine but not quick.
He's a zoning back with a weakness one on one. Not much improvement there but a challenge on the day. We've played him in key defensive slots in the magoos to test and develop his one on one game but he's still a project. He can get touched up. And on Saturday he was slaughtered by McKernan.
First on McKernan. He's a very odd player. He's quick and smart at the air ball. He often looks a ready-made AFL player but then gets exposed and demoted. He outclassed Garthwaite, mostly.
McKernan beat Grimes twice. And Grimes beat him once. Rance took McKernan to school in about ten seconds. (Rance won't tolerate McKernans getting ahead of themselves.)
McKernan beats smaller KPPs. Real KPPs school him. He exposed Garth for size - and smarts at times. And did the same to Grimes a couple of times. McKernan doesn't survive because he eventually gets a tall who flogs him. But Garth and even Grimes at times are in his range.
Back to Garth. His zoning was not bad. He was standing in the hole. But doesn't have the size/athleticism/smarts yet to own it. He is fearless.
Eventually McKernan was dominating him to such an extent that the Bomber decided to take a hanger on him. He misjudged it as Garth took him under it. (Poor percentage from McKernan - the orthodox mark was probably there for the taking.) Garth was in a bit better position for that missed hanger. This was important. Despite getting a hiding Garthwaite not only persevered he improved, if only a little. In the preseason this can get you another gig.
With Garthwaite we're looking for improved ownership of the space in front of and above him. And improved ball winning. One very smart handball a game is nowhere near enough for a zoning back. But 10 touches, 3 marks, 1 contested and 6 1%ers was not bad in 69%TOG.
Defence aside it was good to see Garth get a run in the ruck. Gave him some development time around the ball.
