Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

I agree with Timmy and Tigerman. Was going to post it's Garthy time and bring him in for Towner but some wise minds already realised that before me.

Jack needs help as does Nank. Garthy is a competitor. He can play the defensive tall role PLUS he can take a grab PLUS he kicks straight PLUS he can relieve in the ruck PLUS he can play down back releasing say Astbury forward in case of emergency.

We have a lot of developing talls in the twos but Garthy is the most ready and most likely to be competitive even though others may have higher ceilings.

It's Garthy times. Save Mr September for finals.

PS Also bring in Milesy for Lloyd and give Dusty more forward time.

PPS Butler needs a buzz cut and an attitude re adjustment otherwise out for Stengle.

whats his speed like?

Broady motors.

We just cant get slower at selection. We must get faster.

Its time to give the reigning GF sprint champ a wing for a month

Agree with this. I like the idea of swinging astbury forward.

It could be Rance that needs to go forward. He changed our forward efficiency at Kardinia Park last year when he was shifted there late in the game.

Talk of Garp coming in to play forward is nonsense: he played some junior time and a few VFL games forward last year but hasn't been training/playing there and can't be expected to step up for his first game in a different and very tough position.

Rance, however, could be Dimma's ace in the pack if he ever has the courage to try something different during a game. We have enough tall cover (*smile*, Grimes, Broad, Vlastuin) down back if the game is up for grabs but our forwards aren't grabbing it.

Smart thinking - I like it!

Rance has to stay back. Is by far the best interceptor in the team, probably the league. Often gets double the intercepts of anyone in the team. Last game 12 intercepts, next best was 6. Previous game 11, before that 16. Critical in the backline.

He didn't last week..
If Broad is right he plays but no more selections where players are carrying injuries into a game.

agree. depth is pointless if you dont luxuriate in it.

I don’t like fixing what’s not broke, however if Garthwaite comes in and does well , do we think Astbury may be considered to go forward when he returns?

Not for me. Has been a terrific defender. Only Harry wants to make him a forward.

Play him forward you reckon ? Can't hurt

If the kid can hold his own down back I’ll be happy to move astbury to the forward line.

Be prepared for him to be monstered on the odd occasion in the seniors. His strength whilst good is not AFL first team ready. This talk about him stepping into Astbury's role and not missing a beat is misplaced.

Kicked 3 goals in his debut from memory.

So did Dean Polo. It doesn't mean he's a forward.

Last year Dimma threw Rance forward v Geelong and we got two late goals from the chaos that caused.

Vlastuin also impacted when sent forward a few weeks ago.

Astbury clearly rated last among the potential swingers. People need to let the legend of Dave's first game go.
