Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

From the VFL report:

Ryan Garthwaite

14 disposals, eight marks, one tackle.

Played a different role for us by going forward for the whole game. Started the game really well, and took the first mark of the game after we won the first clearance. Finished with three behinds, but I thought his leading pattern and his contests in the forward 50 were outstanding.

Hmmm...

Call me vain, but i need validation sometimes, was at the game Sun and reported that Ryan had very good leading patterns, (don't think I have ever used that term in a review before but it is what stood out), great to see in the VFL official report from Xavier Clarke that he in fact thought they were outstanding :clap.

I thought he got on the end of some nice leads too. But his kicking was Eltonesque.

Kicked 3 behinds and had a shot after the siren that didn't make the distance. Looked pretty good. Presented well.

Should fit in to our AFL team nicely kicking all those behinds like the rest of our team. Why can't he kick like the 64.10 he kicked in 2013 and 85.14 in 2014?

Give him some more adjustment time to get his goal-kickin' pants on at VFL level, then get him into the seniors against Brisvegas.

I would say his field kicking, as awkward as it looks, this season has been very effective and would be going at 80% efficiency, (stats courtesy of my own eyes, could not find anything official). Has not played forward for 2 1/2 years and has not been doing any goal kicking practice with the forwards at training which might explain the rustiness/nerves. I think he would be a good set shot IF they decided to develop him forward but was drafted as a defender.
Was Sunday a one off exercise? Hope not.

They seemed to try Garp, Broad and Batch forward at various stages. Must be trialling options for later in the season. Saints and Lions would be a good block to start with.

Interesting, TBH. That's our laboratory. We might be in the market for some 190cm tall-mids in the off season. I hope so.

I only saw the last quarter live, and bits of the second and third on the stream.

Broad is of similar height to Garp and competed well, but plays shorter than his height and is not really playing as a leading forward. Garp seemed to have some leading IQ but the set shots I saw were well wide of the mark and lacked penetration.

Might be a good idea to give him another game in the VFL as a forward, and then play him the next week in Melbourne against the Aints.

Those who've been calling for Garthwaite to be rebroken as a forward in the magoos and then played in the ones are half way there. I thought you were all nuts.

I think we'll promote him this week or next. Probably this week. You might have been right. ;D

I think you might have totally nailed this, tigerman. We'll see on Thursday. ;D

Didn't look out of place up forward - in terms of marking, leading, pressure acts and conversion. What more can you ask from a first year tall? And offers another marking defensive option.

Can he ruck?

Brisbane game is the perfect opportunity to give him a taste.

Nah. Caddy and Grigg do that, Bidda. ;D (Tolerably badly IMO.)

Was very good yesterday, seemed to work well with Rance and Co. Most are thinking either Conca or Short will replace Broad, Garth is the same height as Broad, would he be a chance to get the gig?

No not ready yet.
