Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

Played back at the Bushrangers (2 years) and carved his name as a prospective backman in the TAC. Has spent all his time at Tigers playing back. Why throw him into an AFL game as a forward? Just don't do it.

McRae played him forward for a bit in the televised VFL game v Port Melbourne.

Stop this rubbish. Key back only. Progressing nicely, low expectations.

Getting a player after 60 is a long shot and hopefully we find one here.

Yes and the VFL reports suggested he didn't have much impact when they did.
One thing to imagine him as a forward option due to good form as a junior but as others have said he got drafted due to his work as a defender.
Not sure why you'd mess with that too much.

Bottom line If he's as good a forward as a defender then very happy! I'm very bullish about him full stop!
Agree MVT . I've only seen him play back and I think there's a lot too like.

Always like a kid who has the footy nous of a forward

100% played as a forward at Corowa MVT , also has defiantly played as a forward for the Bushies . Sorry should re word that he defiantly played 'some' footy as a key forward for the Bushies

Corowa is more than 3 years ago as a young junior. Pretty much all of his footy since then is as a backman. He was recruited on his ability as a backman. We've far too many times tried to make forwards into backs and backs into forwards. We're all talking about how Garthwaite deserves a chance because of his form at VFL level as a backman. Why bring him in for his first game and play him forward?

Yep that was when he was doing quite well in the backline and he seemed totally lost when moved forward, hardly got a touch.

Agree in theory, but his spot is taken at the moment whereas in the forward line we are crying out for a tall who can have a reasonable impact at CHF. We may as well give it a go for a few games. Nothing to lose dropping Elton.

I think plenty to lose. Have seen so many times young players lose all confidence being played out of position. CHF is a really difficult position to play. I would love to see Garthwaite given a run but only as a backman. Remember as well he is only 192cm, the same as a McIntosh. I'd prefer to stick McIntosh forward and have Garthwaite play McIntosh's backman role.

Fair enough. What about a role as a defensive tall forward. Similar role but opposite end of the ground. North have killed us with their intercept marking in recent times.

Apparently kicked 64.10 in 2013 and 85.14 in 2014.

We don't want blokes that kick at 85% in the forward line. We might win by 10 goals and that buggers up the game plan.

Gaspar was a pretty good set shot for goal too when he was in the vicinity on occasion

Yep, might have something to do with the mechanical action. Consistent action, consistent result

23.10 over his career, that's 70%.

Lolol
That's not dimmas game style, like tackling wasn't the last 3 years.
