Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

So he was a junior forward then
On his junior goal kicking numbers it begs the question as to why the hell anyone would move him to defence for the under 18 comp? Maybe the elite junior development coaches didn't think his kicking action was pretty enough so it was then back line only for Garth.

Any one who ever watched Kennedy or Hogan kicking for goal would think Garth had a fairly smooth n fluid approach to kicking a footy.
Have no idea of Garth's best position, or if he'll even make the transition to regular senior AFL level. Just can't for the life of me understand why a youngster who had such an elite goal kicking accuracy wouldn't at the very least be trialed for a reasonable period as a forward. At least try for the best possible outcomes before settling for salvaging an acceptable result.

Maybe he was moved back 'cause you just don't have 192cm full forwards much anymore.

playing forward is so much harder than playing back, you need much more tricks has your facing the wrong way to goals,we have seen weitering get some big numbers early in his career, but has a defender, compare young power forwards whom nearly always or 100% of the time barely get a stat early in their forward careers.

What's to say Garth needs to be a full forward at AFL level? Bloke called Gunstan is 193cm, been fairly handy at both the Crowbaits n Hawforn over his career.
It's only a discussion point given our lack of key forward prospects at the moment, but a young Garth developing in the forward half along side Jaaack, Daniel n Shai over the next couple of years might just be bloody interesting.
I'd be happy to try exciting young talent forward rather than just tucking them away in the back half n hoping they can play safe structure from day one.

Marcus Adams the full back for the Doggies is 192cm.

Regardless of whether a move forward is right for Garthy ATM, the throw him forward argument basically evolves around him being the best bet to compete in the air and on the ground as a foil to Jack.

Probably the better move to let him consolidate his form in the twos , review after the bye and see how we tackle the second half of the year.

Hopefully Chol and Griff might be part of the conversation later this year.

Agree. Been scratching my head on this. Doesn't make a lot of sense.

I think that's what most have been saying, we have next to nothing in a second marking forward and though not ready he would have most likley the most impact of any of what's available in that role and the fact he has atleast played well as a forward means he could be as an option for the time been. I don't think a stint there would do his development any harm, however more then happy to see him developed in the VFL as a backman. Cupboard is bare

Think he needs a little attitude change, talent will only get you so far.
This! Mab's just does not compete, go hard or go home.

Could be as simple as enjoying the 2nd year of been an AFL player a little too much ?

Is a rookie though so not exactly earning a lot, but could be swimming in his own bathwater?...

Probaly a lot compared to what you get been a school kid the year before, I could be totally wrong but just the "fame" you get been a Tiger is more what I ment, Im unsure why, however as caesar said he just doesn't seem to work hard at all, could simply be the way he is. From what I've seen if he busted his balls he'd be a fair chance I've been a player, if he doesn't pull his finger out he won't be on an AFL list soon.

That's probably it. Maybe it's too cold down here. Are African players failing in the AFL? Majak Daw still hasn't come on big after how many years now? Has Aliir Aliir established himself as a true AFL player? Who knows what it is about our failures.
