Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

Step above the others tonight in the VFL. Kicking ungainly looking but very effective.
Continues to read the ball extremely well in the air and if he doesn't take the mark or make the spoil almost always kills the contest with his 2nd & 3rd efforts.
Playa.

happy days.

Would be pretty hard for him to offer less to the 22 than Elton at present I reckon. Whether its Garth, or some other bloke?

jeez we could do with a footballer at pick 72
I'm very happy with his kicking style et, if his action matched his delivery there's no way he would have got to our first pick, let alone our 3rd. Good footballer

I doubt that will happen.

ToO you seem to watch a lot of the 2nds, from memory I read a few weeks back that he was played forward and didn't offer much? although from memory that same match we got done pretty easily so the pill wasn't coming into the FL often or well..?

It's pretty clear that the club see him more as a backman & I think he will play there at some stage this year.

His kicking looks ungainly because it is a bit robotic. He holds the ball perfectly over his foot and makes sure that his body is lined up with his target, then he drops it very mechanically. All this takes a bit longer than it should and doesn't look natural. He is very accurate though.

His reading of the play is very good. His hands are safe and he scrambles hard for the ball when it hits the ground.

If Leppitsch really is responsible for Rance and Astbury, he has at least as much to work with here.

From the very little i have seen of Garth, I really believe that he is that ideal medium foward that we all wished lennon could become

Kid needs to be tried as a 3rd tall fwd

I agree. At this stage all he has to do is be competitive which it appears he can.

If he plucks the odd mark and kicks the odd goal - bonus.

agree with that from what i have seen. what i havent seen him do is kick under any pressure. what is he like on the run when he has to get ball to boot quickly?

as for calls to move him forward, i dont think it is in his benefit to be moved from the backline where he has played his best footy at higher levels to fill a gap in the ones. i reckon let him settle as a defender then in the coming years he can be tried up forward if need be. and he cant play 2nd ruck, which we need our 2nd forward to do.

Agree with that.

Please no more of this turning backs into forwards strategy. It's hard enough to carve a successful career at AFL level without being thrown to the wolves. Garthwaite is clearly a solid backman. Let him ply his trade there.

Forward as a junior

can we please start turning backs, who were forwards, back into forwards again?

So moving forward we should back ourselves into turning forwards back into forwards instead of leaving forwards as backs?
