Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

Astbury kicked three goals on debut: http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/2010/111420100418.html

That's something Griffiths has only done three times in his entire career.

And Elton has never done at all.
Interesting, that three goals is the record for goals on debut with the tigers and he shares it with two current players who also aren't playing forward in the AFL side, Short and Lloyd. FWIW it puts them equal 13th all time.

Would be odd to play him back up to this point then debut him forward.

But doubt Astbury can play forward either - not much evidence of that and he is possibly slower than Caddy.

I watched the VFL game tonight. In the 2nd qtr Macrae swapped Moore and Garthwaite around. Garthwaite played forward. Both players played better in their original spots and they were returned there after half time.

Was disappointed with Garthwaite forward but they were asking him to lead up to the wings to mark. Wish they would have used him deeper to clunk marks in fwd 50

there was an article on Garthwaite at some point where it was pointed out he was originally a forward. I suspect given we had no key forwards apart from Jack in the AFL team they wanted to have a look at him. That of course is a role of the vfl team and is perfectly understandable given our number one priority with the vfl team is to develop AFL players. Port Melbourne have a different aim as a stand alone team.

i assume they played him as a lead up forward cos we dont one. we dont have a spot for a tall forward inside 50, unless we switch Jack up the ground again, and stop using Dusty deep.

i would like to see Garthwaite allowed to continue developing as a defender in the VFL, rather than throwing a skinny 18yo around trying to plug holes.

I actually thought Moore did well as the lead up option. Suits his agility, can participate after the contest and can take a grab too. It's only his kicking that is holding him back but even that has improved from what I have seen previously

Potential match up this weekend. Garthwaite to line up on Vickery who has been named at FF for Box Hill wearing number#77. Oh how the mighty have fallen

Nobody is slower than Caddy, JB. ;D

Ty's absence from the Hawks team has coincided with their improvement.
Seems Clarko had seen enough after 3 games, shame we gave him 119 of them.
Long way back for TV methinks. Be lucky to get pick 100 for him now.

We'd drop Ty, he would do FA in the VFL and be back a week later. The Hawks drop him and let him stay until he deserves a promotion.

It will be the Hawthorn way or the highway for Vickery.

No doubt this was going to happen, McEvoy copped similar treatment. All up to Vickery to lift or finish his career (albeit, well paid).

Won't complain at all if young Garth tears Tyrone a rather large new one. Not out of any sense of maliciousness towards Tyrone. Just out of appreciation of an up coming young Tiger taking a piece out of a senior player fighting for his career spot.

Ty's in a position where he needs to stand up n start dominating a few ressies games if he ever expects to play at AFL level again, should be fighting tooth n nail for every crumb he can get.

Real shame that someone who has proven time and time again that he is not up to it, ( Batchelor ) is played in front a player that may very well be the best player we drafted in 2016 ( garthwaite )

Missed opportunity

The young bloke got chopped up last week, niko.

Bit more time with McRae. :)

He will get hi chance Niko.

Last week against Redpath he lowered his colors. Certainly Redpath is a tough player and a good mark but he can rebound and beat Ty then he will certainly be on track to play this year.
