Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

Won't complain at all if young Garth tears Tyrone a rather large new one. Not out of any sense of maliciousness towards Tyrone. Just out of appreciation of an up coming young Tiger taking a piece out of a senior player fighting for his career spot.

Ty's in a position where he needs to stand up n start dominating a few ressies games if he ever expects to play at AFL level again, should be fighting tooth n nail for every crumb he can get.

That's it, Maso. If Vickery is to resurrect his career then he really should be, based on experience, tearing Garthwaite apart in today's VFL match.
It should be a very interesting duel between these two and I have this snese that Garthwaite will be up for the challenge. Likes to compete does the young fella and hates to lose a contest, so Vickery is going to have to step up if he is to lower Garthwaite's colours. Sincerely hope Garthwaite gives Vickery a bath today. I hold quite a few hopes for Garthwaite into the future.

McRae on Garthwaite Round 4 -

Ryan Garthwaite

Five disposals, three marks, four tackles, two spoils.

Unfortunately didn’t have his best game, having played on some AFL forwards such as Jake red path and Stewart Crameri.

Garthwaite is a very fine young prospect IMO. I was a big fan of recruiting him. He got chopped up last week. (And didn't get much of it.) But it was by Crameri and Redpath. Two AFL class KPPs. Garthwaite is neither a KPP nor AFL class at this stage. He's getting tested for size. And class at the same time. It's a big ask.

But we do it to stretch him. These challenges are demonstrated compliments. We are pushing him hard at the level because we think he's going to make it. He is going to fail on the way to success.

Here's what McRae had to say about RG's Round 5 -

Ryan Garthwaite

13 disposals, four marks, two tackles, two tackles.

It’s the second week in a row he’s been beaten in a few aerial contests. It’s a focus for him as a young defender, getting his body position right and neutralising those contests. He’s a work in progress, but we’re really comfortable with his development.

Got beat in the air. But got a kick. It was a better beating.

If Macca's really comfortable, I'm really comfortable.

Never beaten in a one on one contest in his entire junior career.
Beaten two weeks in a row at senior VFL level. Welcome to the big league son

Against grown men with more than five years in the AFL system. No surprise he'll get over powered a few times this year, the only issue at this point in time is that he keeps competing and learning from his challenges.

Correct.
Was trying to make the point to those with over inflated expectations, on the pressure and demands of senior football on these juniors who suddenly enter a professional environment. You would need to be mentally strong and have a sense of self belief. For what it's worth, Matt Clarke said he rated Daryl number 1 for competitiveness in the draft so something to work with

He has started well at VFL level but AFL is a big leap. No need to rush him. Our tall backs are settled so he can continue his apprenticeship for much of the year with a taste if there's an injury or suspension.

Somebody once told me that Paul Chapman got the 3 votes in evey single junior game he played. Sounds equally likely.

Maybe we should give him a taste forward in place of Elton. Could not possibly have less impact on a game than Todd.

Step above the others tonight in the VFL. Kicking ungainly looking but very effective.
Continues to read the ball extremely well in the air and if he doesn't take the mark or make the spoil almost always kills the contest with his 2nd & 3rd efforts.
Playa.
