Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

Fly on Garthwaite -

Round One v North Ballarat

RYAN GARTHWAITE

Seven disposals, five contested possessions, three marks

Had his best game for the club. Covering fifteen kilometers is a testament to his work rate and his ability to cover for others. He looks like he's coming along well.

Ryan Ferguson on Round Two v Sandringham

Ryan Garthwaite

18 disposals, 5 marks, 5 tackles, 4 spoils

Played a breakout game. Had a huge impact with his intercept marks, and his desperation, contest work and fight was outstanding.

The Round Three report isn't up yet but we can see the trend over the first two rounds. Critically, McRae praises Garthwaite publicly from the get go for covering the lawn. Fifteen kays even though we won by thirty goals.

I'll be interested to read the VFL report on him for last week. The PRE students were very positive again. This kid is doing everything right ATM.

I saw he was named best for the Tigers in Round 2 and arguably will be so in Round 3 against top opposition.

Best Players: S. Lloyd, R. Garthwaite, C. Ellis, T. Silvestro, C. Moore, A. Miles
Goal Kickers: S. Lloyd 4, B. Lennon 2, T. Stengle, A. Miles, J. Aarts

He got 12 disposals and took 8 marks (1 contested), probably mostly when he swung back.

Could we survive against the Dogs with Rance, Grimes & Garthwaite in the key defensive posts allowing Astbury to go forward?
I'd rather Garthwaite play forward , I think it's a myth that Astbury can play well as a forward.

Astbury kicked three goals on debut: http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/2010/111420100418.html

That's something Griffiths has only done three times in his entire career.

And Elton has never done at all.

Yep kicked a beauty from the boundary line

15 Km? Big tick.

I agree. Astbury has become reliable and servicable, but hes no Justin Leppitch.

It sounds like Garthwaite is going to provide an aerial contest, which apparently he has never lost once in his entire life, and also do the f50 pressure stuff.

Seems disconcertingly logical.

I was rapt when we took him and after ready a heap on his junior days it seems he struggled a little up forward in TAC early days (maybe Bully can confirm), so they moved him down back where for 2 years he played extremely well and as every has read his last year he was rarely if ever beaten..

As much as id love him to go forward the fact his later junior years are down back and all his preseason and recent form has been down back id think they get him in down back, Dave or Grimes up forward and hopefully Soldo to replace Nankers for this week..

He had three debuts in his career?

Ah wait....gotcha. ;)

Would be odd to play him back up to this point then debut him forward.

But doubt Astbury can play forward either - not much evidence of that and he is possibly slower than Caddy.
