Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

I like him on the defensive side but will he make it with that kicking style. Can't get any penetration what so ever. Ball takes too long to get to it's destination.

I think others have said this also...but he reminds me so much if Dustin Fletcher the way he moves and kicks. He went alright.

Great reader of the play and defensive side is impressive.

I don't think you can reprogram his kicking. It takes forever to arrive to his team mate.

I am tipping that because of his unique kicking style, his commitment to the cvontest and his uncanny ability to read the play that Garthwaite is eventually going to be a fan favourite.

And the fact he is already our best tall in the VFL. It worked for McBean.

looks alot bigger than last year, i say play him and move astbury up forward or vice versa.

I think he'd offer more as our second tall forward more then others available, however I'm not sure if it would be best for his development at this point ? , Clubs still unsure what his his best position, it maybe he plays both early on his career filling the holes.

Fact or observation? Just wondering, because something looks different doesn't mean its wrong. I understood his action to be unique but certainly not flawed as his efficiency and accuracy were of the highest level.

Geez maybe we need to consider as a 2nd tall forward. Or, swing Astbury forward and play him back.

Talls are a massive issue.

Maybe we do, despite the better path would be to spend 2017-18 in the 2's.
Chol has the L plates on and is prone to going awol, but Garthwaite will always present and give a contest.
Plus he is a smart footballer, and knows how to play forward.

Surely they'd play him forward at VFL level to see how he goes rather than just crossing their fingers. He wouldn't even be the third tall forward.

When was the last time he played forward? U16 with Yarrawonga?

Don't mind this idea, however, the safer bet would be probably just to bring Elton back in to at least halve some contests and make it harder to double team Reiwoldt.

Agree. If anything I'd play him in defence where he's been good at VFL level and try Astbury up front.

Was it ryan who said we did play him forward for a bit last week, TBH? And that he struggled. Somebody reliable posted it. [Just checked - ryan.]

Strange move playing Garthwaite forward for first half after a very good game last week up back.

Moved back in second half where he looked a lot more comfortable.

Soldo should ruck more than Maric. Soldo played more as a key forward with little bursts in the ruck.

Anyway, I don't see any need to rush Garthwaite's development one way or the other just three games into his senior career. Not to say he shouldn't get a chance as a defender.

Interesting that we're stretching Soldo with more forward time. That's where I'd be looking.

Were a massive concern at the start of the year & now with Griffiths, Hampson etc injured the cupboard is fairly bare.

I'd say it's as bare as Lady Godiva's arse
