Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

Seems to have good spacial awareness and can read the flight well. Key attributes for a tall.

he was great yesterday, I think their big bloke #77 or 71 might have kicked a goal on him early , he didnt lose a contest after that

did he play on BIG forwards? does he match up ok strength wise?
and did he play on McCartin at all?
and one more while im on a roll, is he playing deep or more CHB?

certainly would be good to see another capable tall defender coming thru.

Might have got a bargain, went late in the draft because of his kicking action.
Be good if he grew another inch or two.

This.My mates lad played with him at the Bushies and said he's an absolute ripper and also said not to be put off by his kicking action as his disposal efficiency is excellent.

I didn't see him play on Faddy but the opponents he did play on (unsure) were sometimes bigger. They switch them around so often it's hard to recall who.
He's not tall at 192cms. More likely to fill a third tall role either fwd or back.

He played predominately as a forward in his junior days.

Could he be that third mobile forward we have been crying out for?

He's able to claim the SECOND tall forward spot ATM.

I query the 192cm...saw a pic of him next to Chol (who is 198cm I think) and he didn't look 6cm shorter.

certainly played majority of his junior career as a forward

And was an incredibly accurate kick at goal.

Maybe we already have our forward that we are desperately searching for?

Let's hope that we don't try and 'fix' his kicking action just because it looks ungainly.

We've had players in our history who have a beautiful kicking action but couldn't hit the side of a barn.

I'm 193, and I've stood next to Garthwaite, and he was slightly shorter. Reckon 192 is about right.

Good to see someone's noticed. Houston has had a year on PA's list and played several SANFL games in '16 post-injury. Since his début in '17 round 1, has played every game, has averaged close to 17 Ds, 7 Ms, and with a very high DE%.

He's a local boy. I watched him a lot as a junior. Very happy for him.

Plays well above his years.

Can you play CHF?

My brief stint in third division Vafa two's says no. Though the coaches make you play ruck at 193 at that level. Not great when I'm also about Garthwaite's weight. :hihi

Another good game I think we have found one here.

I agree with that. Was one of a handful who was decent.
