Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

The club finally getting the hang of this drafting business. Gathwaite could well be quite an astute pick (being as late as pick 72). Then when one thinks that Stengle (whom also shows some promise) was taken in the rookie draft. This is following from last year which I think also showed some pretty astute drafting (with the exception of Broad, whom I would have thought was more a rookie type).

His main strength that I see is that he reads the ball brilliantly in the air. Very solid mark and even if he's right out of position finds a way to halve the contest.
He's also very strong for a 1st year tall player. More than holds his own against men.
Makes good decisions with ball in hand. Footballer. Kicking awkward in style but neat. I didn't see it as a problem that's for sure.
One to watch with interest..

Always thought Harry Taylor played a bit like a retard but was still evective as a backman.

Pleased to read he was in the bests.

Massive win for our list structure if Garthwaite can develop into a top notch KPD. Would allow us to focus on drafting key forwards and mids.

Happy to hear the Garth is developing nicely at VFL. Would be fairly tidy if he develops into a quality AFL KPP at such a late draft pick,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, major bonus.

certainly played majority of his junior career as a forward

we really need a 3rd forward who can take a contested grab.

I'd give him a crack up there.

sounds like a ripper.

he was great yesterday, I think their big bloke #77 or 71 might have kicked a goal on him early , he didnt lose a contest after that

$hai was a bit quiet but first real game, still kicked 2 though & flew for a few big marks that didn't quite stick

Stengle gives me a chubby , obviously has licence to just play , he didn't really play on ball but covers lots of ground, stick him on the G & watch him explode I reckon

:partyfest

a bullseye rookie would be huge. actually with George's rise, I should say another bullseye

Might have got a bargain, went late in the draft because of his kicking action.
Be good if he grew another inch or two.

Maybe.. maybe not. I'd vouch he'd make them work hard for a kick.
Houston has been doing very well at Port.

Lots of kids are very mature these days.

Do they have a footy record or something similar at the VFL? Sounds like you'd have needed something to hide behind taz.

Damn good to hear that there's still a bunch of exciting youngsters having strong impact in our VFL games. C Ellis, Garth, Shai, Stengle, Soldo, Chol.

Good to see someone's noticed. Houston has had a year on PA's list and played several SANFL games in '16 post-injury. Since his début in '17 round 1, has played every game, has averaged close to 17 Ds, 7 Ms, and with a very high DE%. A very good kick. He played junior footy with Jack Silvagni, same team. I'm watching their progress with curious interest. Silvagni treated like football royalty at the Bluebaggers and taken as F/S pick 53, gifted No.1 and the new 'face of Carlton'.

Houston had to wait until Rookie Draft, pick 45, and much later for début, no fanfare. It was amusing to see them start on each other last match, commentators even got into it. End of the game, not that they played on each other all night, but only a handball between them. I'm predicting that Dan will be a good, reliable player who may be as much value in the long run as the much more highly-vaunted Jack.

But back to Garth, really like him, but still doubt he wouldn't be slapped around by the likes of Hogan who Dees flog supporters would claim beat Rance in '16 match. Just give him a solid VFL season; keep building body strength, few kgs of muscle and he could be a ripper.
