Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

Garthwaite's kicking style/action may come under scrutiny with the added pressure of AFL standards, but that said he appears on the highlight clips to be pretty comfortable with his action. And he does appear to be pretty accurate over differing distances. Time will tell whether he has the ability. but certainly doesn't seem to be a bust of a pick, which is great particularly given it was #72.

Plenty of examples of other clubs picking bargains late in the draft or via the rookie list. About time Richmond got lucky too. Maybe Garthwaite is the one. Seems like a decent young man & that's an important start.

Good post. At that pick expectations are low and players will come with flaws. Fingers crossed..

I watched for that handball on your direction Jack...... I'd have a hole in my TV is he did that in the seniors

Whether by luck or design at least the handball was in front of the receiving player so he was on the move and not standing still.

Geez. We'll have to drum that out of him in a hurry. At least a metre behind or around the ankles is the minimum acceptable. None of this fancy putting the ball out in front of a team mate *smile*.

Very true. At his ankles or about 5 metres in front of him or about a metre above his head...or behind him. That's the Richmond way.

Sorry, or the handball about 1 metre away to a team mate with an opponent standing next to him....

Not really sure if Garth will make it or not and the odds say they usually dont but there is the odd exception and hope Garth is that exception

*Kicking probably will get exposed in the afl and will need to improve that
*192 is slightly on the 'small 'ish' side for a KPP but there are reports that he is now 194 which is about the size to compete with the Patton,Wright,Boyd,Lynch,Danihers now which are all around the 2mtre mark.
* Kid looks extremely coachable and a kid that really looks like he wants to learn and succeed and wont leave a stone unturned

* Die Hard Dour Defender that may just become a good swingman

Ah, now that's my favorite! I just love it when they do that.

He is about the same size as the guy who I think is our most underrated defender in Grimes. Players of this size down back become extremely valuable if they can play on talls and mediums, in Grimes' case even smalls. It gives the backline a lot of flexibility when you have someone who can pick up a 3rd tall forward or a smallish forward. Hopefully he is in that mould.

Add to the fact that he has shown he is a pretty darn good shot at goal, and must be able to find it up there as well, and we could have a missing piece of the forward puzzle.

I have a really good feeling about this kid, think he will be a key player for us for years to come, and for those that say what about the big mac, i always thought he was a long shot, given his athletic traits and no one would touch him into the 70s...

This one was a weird draft, i think Bully and others would say that, to have Graham slip to the 50s is nuts..

Dimma said tonight @ AGM that Ryan is a very competitive beast & that he & Grimesy have been knocking each other heads off

Seems he's really impressing at training and Rance even mentioned him when accepting his life membership

Yes, but then went on to say they're similar types and Ryan will add to our KEY defense positions. Hmmmm Grimes and Garthwaite as key defenders?

Gawd, bloody positive training reports, wait till the Garfish tries to kick a ball or two during a game before we hail him as the next messiah ;D.

Would be worth watching at training, Garf banging heads with the Grub, got a healthy streak of niggle in him has the Grubster, Garf could learn a lot.

This kid is up and about. He can probably play football.

;D

I hope your good feelings are better than mine. I have good feelings about us every year, and we generally stink.
I once said hammer had the biggest upside in the afl, every year I said "this is Tyrones year", and I was positive that Yaz was going to save us
