Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

Yes his ball drop is inconsistent, sometimes looks right with RH guiding but sometimes keeps the left hand on for a bit too long. He might be someone who does some things RH and some LH eg. he might play tennis left handed etc. so he might not be purely a RH sportsman. Hope we don't mess up his head trying to change something that works ok since his effectiveness look quite good from those highlights.

I read an article about him ( can't recall where) and the comments under the article were from someone who knew him when he was playing junior footy. He said the 2 handed drop came from goal kicking as he was a forward at the time

Equal 2nd in the goalkicking test.

After watching his clip a few times reckon his kicking is fine in fact looks safer than a few on our list. He guides it onto the boot well and seems very steady doing so even though it looks unorthodox. Could be a blessing that he fell purely due to his kicking action even though his efficiency is good

Zips make an appointment with a health professional.
Incredibly I recall seeing a post on here recently stating that Zips is quite reasonable during the offseason. Got to be kidding me!

Might depend on which leg he's trying to kick with.

Doubt there will be major issues with him as long as he doesn't get too screwed over by expert coaches trying to fix a kicking style that looks bloody awkward but he's fairly capable with.

Kicking action kind of reminds me of James Manson (Tasmanian whom played with Collingwood & Fitzroy in the late 1980s/early 90s). Albeit, Manson was probably even more awkward looking. Funnily though, as maligned as Manson was for his kicking, he wasn't nearly as bad as he was made out to be. Just looked particularly odd.

Manson didnt have to deliver out of the backline with anything like the forward pressure applied today.

Just cant see it standing up.

Manson was a battler, D Cloke wasn't though. Yeah game is different now, but its hard to envisage Clokey not having an impact. We'll see how RG goes.

Agree. He'll have to make it as a forward or it'll be a bust

Had forgotten about Cloke. I'm too young to remember much of Cloke playing (particularly for RFC), but yes from footage I've seen, you're right, he had that weird looking two handed drop going on. Similar to Manson, played as a Ruck/fwd.

Maybe like Leysy suggests, as a backman with defensive forwards pressuring like a pack of rabid dogs (as is more the style of play today), the kicking action won't stand up. Could well be more suited to the fwd line at the elite level. Will be interesting to see.

All this talk of his poor kicking - it's ungainly but efficient.

The problem is that we now have a backline that is chockablock with ugly kicks.
Whatever Ryan does, i reckon it'll be better than that dished up by Grimes, who has no left foot and regularly misses targets.
Astbury, our designated gorilla go-to backman, is Mr Up and Under and like Grimes has little confidence in hitting a target.
Taylor Hunt is just woeful at hitting targets, let alone the other stuff.
Nathan Board was just another Francis overreach who is not a viable prospect, and ditto Elton - both will be "pursuing a new direction" in 2018.
And even Rancey is chancey.
Which is why supercoach thinks that Houli is a must have guy that seeks his own paddock to guard, for the release - despite his questionable decision making.
Not convinced CEllis has the build to play half back and compensate for all this haphazard ball use.
So expect to see Dusty spending a lot of his time across the half back line doing his dinky run to receives.

Our backline desperately needs some quality ball users.

Not only is Houlis decision making questionable his kicking accuracy is too. Up until injury he had the most turnovers for us in 2016.

We'd be nuts to play him anywhere but CHF

Ditto ! Or at least trial him there - Dermie clone

Dermot Brereton
Born: August 19, 1964 (age 52), Australia
Height: 1.86 m
Weight: 93 kg

WOW Dermie was only 186cm tall ???

I thought he would have been 193/194

Dunstall 188cm Carey 192cm and L.Mathews 178cm

Wow goes to show height is not everything

Bearing in mind he was picked up in the 70s, some might have to temper expectations of him to stop any future disappointment. Lots of big name comparisons flying about currently. Let him develop and hopefully show some signs this year at VFL level.
