Pick 12 discussion.

Apologies if this is inaccurate but it seems the afl phantom had us taking Ellis and then everyone was all over it like it was fact. And yes by the look of hid reel he is a bit ::)for a pick 12

I hope you're right but all I hear is Ellis this, Ellis that, it seems that no matter who gets mentioned as a slider we get lugged with Mr Vanilla.

Imagine if it goes like this -

1. Petracca
2. Brayshaw
3. McCartin
4. Pickett
5. Langford
6. Goddard
7. Ahern
8. Duggan
9. Moore
10. Wright
11. Cockatoo
12. Ellis (ignoring Weller, Lever, De Goey & Laverde)

That to me is of McMahon proportions, up there with Biddsicombe & JON, as short sighted as Fiora over Pavlich & Tambling over Franklin.

Just plain dumb.

Why have all these articles continually linked us to Ellis? I hope I'm wrong but I don't like the smell of it. If he gets an invite next week I'll be resigned to the fact we'll take him rain, hail or shine.
Perhaps we simply hinted in the right areas that we were strongly considering Mr. Vanilla a bit earlier in the piece and have said nothing since to alter perceptions while quietly mulling over the possible opportunities as the draft may unfold.
Clip of highlights shows a young player who plays pretty unfussed footy, gets to the right places, gets the pill n shares it with his team mates, tackles, links, reads the flow, takes good options n pretty clean with his ball handling. Wasn't it mentioned by some that he's been B.O.G. in four junior premierships? Suggests he's pretty composed n talented when the game's serious.

I'm not suggesting he's a bad player but with guys like Weller, Laverde, Lever & De Goey potentially available I would shocked if we called out his name. I've labelled him vanilla because he doesn't have one stand-out feature. He's had 1 game of 30+ possessions for the year and that was against an average NT side. His tackling numbers are average, his KE is below average, he runs hot & cold, he doesn't take the game on, he doesn't win enough clearances, he's only taken 1 contested mark in 2 years, he never kicks bags of goals and he put in some very ordinary games at the carnival. Maybe I've completely missed something here but he strikes me as a pick 20-25 not a pick 12.

SEN just tweeted B.Anderson will be on for a draft Preview at 7pm. so we'll see what that tells us.
says on the HS article about Langford and other goss is that we like Ellis's inside work. would taking Ellis at 12 lessen our chances to then get some pace/run/carry at 33 or are we better off going a Weller/Laverde etc type at 12 and then some inside grunt at 33? which would be the most likely to eventuate from a "most likely to happen" point of view? if that makes any sense...

The media don't know. They get their information from ringing up the families or the players themselves.

" who has been out to see you at home Cory ? "
" Francis Jackson has been out twice "

Next day TIGERS KEEN ON ELLIS in the HUN ....other papers and radio stations say we are linked to him

Anything could still happen

Yes it would effect our chances of getting a quality run and carry player, Garlett, Menadue & McKenzie will go early. Boekhorst is also looking like an early pick. The value will lie in the inside mids at 33, that's another reason to cross Ellis off the list.

this from a guy on BF whose sun played & trained with Weller with his view on Ellis being picked by us. it's similar to my feeling about us picking him or not and will perhaps make u feel better. he also says Weller is hot on our radar if available =

My read on Ellis from the recruiters point of view is this:

If all the mids we really rate are gone by Pick 11, AND we don't rate the KPP who slide and are available at our pick, then Ellis is 'best available'.

Go have a look at the "Pelchen takeover" of twitter.

People asked him a series of questions and he responded. You can get this off twitter, it is also on the site which shall not be named. Not sure if we're allowed to put it here, but since it's on twitter I'll retype it....(never thought I'd open a twitter account before!)

EsCargot23
@AFL Corey Ellis seems to split fans and experts about where he belongs in the top 30. What's your opinion of him? #PelchenTakeover

@EsCargot23 Corey is very unlikely to get past Richmond at pick 12. He is an outstanding kick and while cruisey, has genuine talent.

All of the recruiter types on the various websites say he's a good kick. Is it possible his KE % stats are way down because he was used to get the ball in a pack and just boot it forward?

He's one of the best kicks in the pool. Some are getting hung up on numbers.

How on earth would Pelchen know this though...?

wasn't he having a hand in recruiting/list stuff at Saints. i did see he got asked about who pick #1 will be & his reply was something like "it wouldn't be fair to the saints or the Player to answer that one"

Personally I don't get hung up on names and highlight clips of the kids. I like what little I have seen of Weller but if Frank thinks Ellis is the best kid we can take then that'll do me until he's proven right or wrong.

Very underwhelming "highlight" package
Doesnt take the game on or run on to link up play just goes for kick or handball. Also If his disposal efficiency is around the 50% mark hes no first rounder
Pass would rather Cockatoo or Weller

Yep agree. Seemed to be playing loose man in defence, never had an opponent near him. Looked solid but seems to be more in the mould of Vlaustin/Conca types.

I'm not disagreeing with anything you're saying Bullus but after reading a bit on here about the contrasting desire between Laverde and Ellis I did go to the Inside Football draft section and it was noticeable that the Western Jets coach gave a BIG wrap to Ellis and just a normal one for Laverde.

Note that they play for the same team and the coach, Baker, calls Ellis "one of the smarter and natural players I've had the pleasure of coaching".

Now it may just be that Laverde didn't need his tyres pumped up while Ellis needed a bit more of a push but I did find it interesting as I do rate their coaches comments. I may be naïve in thinking the TAC coaches are honest and not playing the draft PR game.

Chris Pelchen tweeted Corey is an "outstanding kick" and that "while he's cruisey he's a genuine talent." Also said that he's "unlikely to get past the Tigers"

Quote Disposal Efficiency all you like but we know it doesn't tell the full story. I've seen other draft gurus on other Forums rate him the 6th best mixing the whole draft. You fail to see his upside while hanging your hat on it with Cockatoo.

Show me one draft guru who rates him 6th best in the draft?
