Pick 12 discussion.

Yes great post Chimpy

The one thing I would add is probably a mix of draft camp and better junior programs across Australia have contributed to much better top 30 draft picks in the last 8 years. Compared to the 1990's odds of drafting a Banik or Lounder have decreased dramatically. Agreed there are some shockers that come out of the top 15 in the last few years:

Jack Watts
Chris Yarran
Jarrad grant
Cale Morton
Scully
JON

But compared to drafts like the 1995:
1 Clive Waterhouse
2 Matthew Primus
3 Brendon Fewster
4 Scott Bamford
5 Brendan Krummel
6 Daniel Healy
7 Ben Edwards
8 Jared Crouch
9 Allen Jakovich
10 Simon Prestigiacomo

These days thing like the draft combine help

One of the recruiting team said they pretty much rate the top 20 players in order and the highest still onboard at pick 12 is who they will pick. It'll be interesting to see if we do delay in calling out a name.

And as I've often said, how many past players wouldn't make it today because of beep tests, sprints, height, speed etc.

Kevin Bartlett: too small, not fast enough.

Yes he was small and skinny but KB was a deadset speed machine. Easily the fastest whilst at Richmond and would have been in the top few fastest in the VFL. He ran professional sprint races - Gift races - and was more than handy.

Have a feeling neither Weller or Duggan are going to be available.
Question on Ellis is he a genuine midfielder?

I think for that to happen someone else would have to slide, like De Goey, Lever or Ahern. I'd hope we take Ahern ahead of Ellis personally.

I have one and one only decent gossip source in afl footy and that source at times gets frightfully close to the inner sanctum of the Gold Coast Suns. This source has spoken directly to inner recruiting sanctum staff yesterday. That staff member has revealed, the Suns major interest for their first pick has swung to Duggan.

I think the combine is chronically overrated by fans.

The difference between the absolute elite and the very good is so small, yet it results in a large boost in a player's ranking.

I often think about how current star players would be perceived if their combine times were brought up after every AFL match to justify how well they had (or hadn't) performed. Jack Riewoldt vs Ben Griffiths for example would raise a legitimate debate on these measures, when it shouldn't even be a contest. I think it's unusual how much emphasis we place on one footballer being 0.3s faster than another footballer at draft time, yet during an AFL season we never, ever talk about such measures. All we care about is their impact on match day. Slow, fast, tall, short, fit, fat, whatever - if they perform we're happy, if they don't we rip into them.

Footskills, ball-winning, and hardness/pressure are probably the 3 most talked about factors on here after each game.

Why don't we talk about these same factors more often when discussing draft picks?

I would rate Duggan as predominantly outside with some scope to improve his inside credentials, if we want to break it down to cold hard stats then he averaged 1 clearance at the carnival, 15 possessions & had the following possession/contested breakdown - 10/2, 12/2, 17/11, 17/4, 20/5. His standout performance of 17/11 also included 5 clangers, something which backs up my initial observations that his best work is done in space.

Now I'm not one to hang my hat on combine data alone but given Duggan hasn't yet proven his midfield credentials at state level or at VFL level, one has to try and draw some conclusions based on his strengths & weaknesses. My ceiling for him would be something along the lines of Kade Simpson, whether that is how the club feels is up for debate but I personally think there are better midfield options available.

My source also says Goddard is a lock for GWS, dunno if that is out there yet or not but there it is.

Have heard the same, I expect the trio to be Laverde, Pickett & Goddard.

David Cloke: too fat, poor kick. Dale Weightman: too slow and short, Jack Dyer: too short, Kevin Bartlett: too small, not fast enough. Dermott Brereton: too short for CHF, Greg Williams: wrong body shape,

Every player mentioned played in a bygone era. The modern game is faster and harder and so physical capabilities more important.

If he gets picked be for us to bad we have told him if his there his ours if not its ellis these are only two club wants

I've heard of players been told the night before that if they are still there they'll be picked, but I've never heard a club tell a player 2 weeks out....strange considering how even this draft is , you never know who may slip

Yeah, no way they are told this far out. In fact, I doubt the clubs have finalised their list yet. Now is when they are cramming and going over all the data again to get their priorities sorted in order.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are certain on who they want ,with a couple of back ups, by now I think you would be just about 2nd guessing yourself if you haven't decided

If you've got three picks inside the first seven, you can assure one player.

No way I take Goddard ahead of Durdin.

There's a good chance Durdin will be available at 12, would you bite if Weller was on the board?
