Pick 12 discussion.

Ran a 2.94sec/20 metre, beep was below average but was coming off a knee reco.

That's a pretty quick time for a ruck/forward, pretty sure it was just outside the top 10 in his year. Blease was 2.91, so Tyrone was just behind a kid playing mid field who's mainly known for his speed.

The "TV is slow" myth is just that, he is very quick for a big man, however you would not consider him to have a big tank.

I wouldn't be averse to grabbing a quick player but I honestly believe leg speed can be overrated. It's the speed you move the ball that's the imperative. Quick hands and quality disposal, good footskills putting the ball where it needs to be negates leg speed. Fantastic having an entire team of fleet footed Usain Bolts but if their decision making is lousy and skills are poor, they will be flogged.

24.98 which was top 70%
that's critical.

it means that he has endurance and repeat speed and an elite kick.

throw in his leadership and I am sold, hope we get him

Absolutely correct, this is why we should lock in a quick, skilled & agile midfielder with our first, Lachie Weller ticks all those boxes, his inside game is also accomplished. The other likely candidates, Garlett, Menadue & McKenzie will be gone by 33. Even if they were up for grabs you wouldn't be upset with a couple of pacy options. The way I see this draft panning out is the outside runners will be picked between 20 & 30, but the quality inside mids will be available by our second selection. If we require more pace from pick 52 onwards then we can invest in a more speculative type.

Correct me if I'm wrong but top 70% could also be read as bottom 30%.

what we lack are enough players who can burst away from packs to put the opposition on the back foot. we are slow in both leg speed and ball movement which is why we chip sideways and bomb long. we don't have enough players who can make separation on their opponent with and without the ball. you don't need a team full of lightning quick players but you do need some, especially in todays congested football. a few quick players can break open zones and congestion where other players can find more space. we are very one paced, predictable and easy to negate. we also can't get a run on and hit the scoreboard with quick succession - if we are 5 goals down it's virtually game over.

What are peoples thoughts on Ahern.. Looked to have great vision on limited internet footage

Apparently looking like sliding into the late teens. Essendon keen.

Two things to bear in mind with Drummond is firstly, he's an overager and has had an extra year of physical development. The second is he's prone to butchering the ball, both from a kicking & handball perspective.

Just to give you some indication here's a snapshot of his TAC season.

vs Gippsland Power (20 kicks, 14 ineffective)
vs Eastern Ranges (18 kicks, 9 ineffective)
vs Calder Cannons (18 kicks, 8 ineffective)
vs NSW (26 kicks, 13 ineffective, 13 handballs, 8 ineffective)
vs Eastern Ranges (18 kicks, 16 ineffective, 12 handballs, 6 ineffective)
vs Bendigo Pioneers (16 kicks, 5 ineffective, 13 handballs, 5 ineffective)

To put it bluntly, his disposal can be a real liability, sure he's fast but I'd be wanting better user of the ball for pick 33. If we reach with our second rounder it will be a poor strategy, particularly if Gore, Miller or Neal-Bullen are available.
in his 3 games with RFC VFL his DE was 78% , albeit a lot smaller sample , I certainly didn't think he was that bad

He tested mid range for the Beep test so his endurance isn't great. The big test when assessing players like Duggan is how much upside can occur when he gets into the elite environment?
I think we would all agree that he is a very good player and that he uses the ball well plus he has a good defensive ethic. Athletically he is sound without being brilliant and he does have a great footy IQ.
The risk in selecting him isn't high so it all comes down to the upside potential.

yea no doubt.

He looks a classy unit, good leader, captains all the teams he is in. What's not to like

I just finished watching the Collingwood Reserves vs AIS game so I thought I'd share a few final thoughts.

Liam Duggan

Overall I didn't think he had much impact at all, his kick-outs were generally sound, he gets excellent range and generally manages to kick to a contest. There were a few times where he overcooked his long range bombs but I wouldn't mark him down given the AIS were monstered in the height department. As far as run and carry was concerned, very little, most of his effective kicks were in the defensive arc and he did get caught a lot. To me he's still very outside, he had some brief stints in the middle but was ineffectual. His tackling was also pretty shoddy giving away two free kicks but again, he was up against some powerful units so one can't be too critical. He definitely looks AFL quality but the transition to midfield will take some time, I would expect a minimum of 2 years on a back flank. As to whether he's a certainty to make it as a high production mid, it's a toss of the coin from my perspective.

Lachlan Weller

I thought he showed some great signs of being a genuine A grade talent. He exhibited some good bursts of speed, he held onto the ball until the right option materialised and he used some impressive footwork to create space. His inside work was also impressive, once he puts on weight I can see him becoming the complete midfielder. Even being 72kg wringing wet he wasn't afraid to hit the packs and win clearances. There's definitely something classy about the way he moves, I can see him being particularly damaging on the outside and with his elite kicking skills, he will bring some serious hurt factor to the table. For upside he trumps Duggan and I predict he'll be playing as early as next year.

Angus Brayshaw

The debate is over for me, if I was St Kilda I would be calling out his name at pick 1. This is contrary to 99% of the football world but I simply don't see any weaknesses in his game and feel he's way more bankable than Petracca. I'll be keenly eying off the Rising Star odds because all my money will be on Brayshaw when betting opens. He'll probably end up at Melbourne but I suspect the Saints are agonising over this decision, they should just keep it simple and go for the guy who has dominated at every level he's played.

Tom Lamb

Have sold him short due to a poor carnival but he's redeemed himself in my eyes. I think his best position will be as a third tall given that he has some sneaky tricks up the sleeve and will provide some great mobility. He made a few blues against the Magpies but overall I thought he played a top game, should go around 20 based on this performance and whoever selects him will have a fairly unique talent on their hands. Gunston is the type of player who he could emulate.

Hugh Goddard

Looked more like a top ten prospect in this match, he's very strong overhead and can clearly compete with the bigger bodies. To me he's the most bankable of all the KPD's and I wouldn't be surprised to see him picked in the top ten.

Jordan De Goey

Good strong and tough game, was consistently on the bottom of packs and was generally outstanding defensively. He plays like Luke Parker but will need to up his production levels, his upside will be significant if this does eventuate. If he lands at Collingwood I would back him in, they have a very good record of development and should be able to extract every ounce of talent.

bullus, out of all the kids "in the mix" at pick 12, who do you rate the best? And who do you think will suit our needs the most?

Lachie Weller is the one who I want, I rank him the third best mid behind Brayshaw & Petracca. He was on the ground for 3 quarters and every 30 minutes produced a piece of play that made me sit up and take notice. He's so skinny at the moment but when he fills out he could be something special. I posted my top 12 previously but here's how I see it panning out.

1. Petracca (although the Saints might regret this one)
2. Brayshaw
3. McCartin
4. Laverde
5. De Goey
6. Pickett
7. Goddard
8. Lever
9. Moore
10. Wright
11. Cockatoo
12. Weller

If Weller is off the board then I would strongly consider Ahern, I just feel its important to grab the most well rounded mid.
