Pick 12 discussion.

Slightly different Baloo, more ruck than those guys. If I was to give a comparison, it would be Paddy Ryder like. Great leap, really good at jumping at the ball, not huge on body contact in the marking contest but doesn't shy away from ruck work contact, outstanding kicking skills and very good on the ground.

Sounds a bit like Ottens

I don't ever see him being as big and powerful as Ottens but the young version is similar.

His build is bigger at the equivalent age, reckon he has the potential to get much stronger. If he does add this string to his bow then he becomes a force to be reckoned with, his upside is much higher than McCartin IMO.

That's interesting. I could never tell with Otto is he lost his leap because he got to big or it was the back problems. Not sure which came first. One probs lead to the other. I think it was the back, in fact I'm sure it was. But early Otto was a gazelle. Not many big men could move like he could.

If Two metre Peter is a chance to end up %80 the footballer Brad Ottens was destined to be before the back, we must call his name.

You can say that with any of the kids though. "Could be the next ....Chris Egan/Mitch Thorp/Beau Dowler" or any other failed top draft pick.

Of course Wright could be the next Ottens or Sandilands etc

Anyone have views on the defensive side skills of the players of interest ie Weller, Ahern, Duggan and Ellis? You don't get too many defensive side highlights so hard to tell. Weller's highlights showed a couple of great desperate tackles.

Duggan has had two games of 12 tackles at TAC level, he knows how to get his hands dirty. The other three are solid without being spectacular. Cockatoo is the other tackling machine, he averaged 5.9 tackles at the 2013 carnival, another reason behind his late bolter status.

John Meeson was a real plodder in a very weak year for junior talent, he also had very few forward capabilities. The other aspect that people are overlooking is the development left in Wright, talls don't reach their peak until 23-24.

We're obviously out managing expectations already. There's an article on the AFL website about how we're looking for mids, and are considering Duggsn, Ellis and Weller.

Can stop talking about Wright now and starting talking about Ellis. Lock it in if history is anything to go by.

Donut wound up being a bit like that Brisvegas ruck man Keating, injured all year n then just wandered back into the side n won premiership medallions. If Wright can achieve 80 % of that I'll take it.

At the bottom of the article it also states we may take Wright, which deems the headline to be misleading. I'm also of the opinion that we would favour Weller over Duggan, the extra speed makes him a necessity, the club has admitted we are deficient in this area so time to put the money where the mouth is.

What were his numbers over the remainder of his carnival. Actually all of 13' for that matter if you are across them.

This far out from the draft why would we or any other club bother to be so specific about what we are looking at?
Most of the media is speculation n hype about possible scenarios to keep the fans paying out shekels for content, so they'll twist n turn and pump out any possible situation to keep the punters looking.
It's more than likely we'll be looking for a smooth quality midfielder because that's what our list profile is obviously in urgent need of, doesn't mean that we'd advertise to all n sundry that we're hovering n praying for a talent like Wright to slip for us. Nor does it mean we'll just waltz in and grab the lowest ranked possible mid just to keep all the pessimists happy just because they're desperate for a reason to bag the recruiters.

Yes, but the article talks a lot about how the others are likely to be taken before our pick.
I'm seeing the grooming of our expectations starting now.

If Wright is taken early we pick the next best mid, Ellis would be at the bottom of the pecking order I would have thought.

13.2 possessions, 8.4 contested & 3 clearances over 5 matches.

Agree - Weller or Mr Wright.

My guess is still Wright for GCS.

Gut feel Weller is our guy. We seem to have interviewed him more than the others. Followed by Duggan and Ellis..

I would have thought if GCS were looking for a tall it would be a defensive tall, one of Lever, Goddard or Durdin rather than Wright. They are strong forward and in the ruck but probably a bit weaker down back.

I think I am in the minority here but I would prefer Duggan over Weller. To me he is a much more rounded footballer.

Pick Me for AFL Draft: Liam Duggan

LIAM Duggan remembers running Ballarat’s Eastern Oval centre square perimeter trying to keep warm as his under-16’s qualifying final was brought to a dramatic halt.
Bacchus Marsh teammate Nathan Prince had collapsed in a forward pocket and Duggan — a hot chance to land at Richmond or North Melbourne early in this month’s draft — at first thought he had fainted.

But when Prince went into cardiac arrest and required resuscitation the game was called off and the gravity of what was unfolding immediately hit Duggan, his Cobra teammates and coach, Western Bulldogs legend Doug Hawkins.
Prince, 17, lost his fight for life 11 days later.
Five days after his funeral and a tear-filled training session, Duggan, then 14, kicked two of Bacchus Marsh’s eight goals on his non-preferred right foot as Hawkins’ side beat the undefeated North Ballarat to win a premiership dedicated to Prince.

It remains Hawkins’ sporting pinnacle. He said he was more proud of that moment than breaking Ted Whitten’s games record or his six flags at Braybrook.
Hawkins said it also capped the four weeks Duggan matured from a boy to a man.
“His finals performances against all odds with young Nathan lying in hospital … I watched that kid grow,” Hawkins said.
“He reminds me so much of Robbie Flower. Duggan might be a left-footer, but he’s got this outstanding balance and he ticks every single box.
“He kicks both sides, he’s got good vertical leap, he’s strong overhead and has the tank of a marathon runner.

“One-on-one he’s hard to beat. He can outmark a smaller bloke and a taller bloke he’ll get it to ground and beat them on the run.
“When he started training I said to his dad, ‘your kid’s going to play league footy’.”
And Duggan wasn’t the only one.
Of Hawkins’ 2011 side left-footer Dillon Viojo-Rainbow will find an AFL home in the second round and gangly forward Brenton Payne — grandson of 184-game Bomber Charlie Payne — is a chance at the back end.
“Viojo-Rainbow is an absolute jet, As soon as I saw these boys they screamed AFL straight away, straight away,” Hawkins said.
“I picked the three of them. And that grand final that those boys were a part of had a lot to do with their development, don’t worry about that.”

Richmond has spoken to Duggan several times and wants to add to its growing band of classy ball users at pick 12, while draft sources believe Duggan won’t get past North Melbourne at pick 16.
Duggan said that while a few of his teammates started thinking about their mortality on the football field after Prince died, he learned not to take anything for granted.
“The ultimate was taken away from Nathan that day, so live in the now and don’t take anything for granted and just be grateful for what you’ve got,” he said.
“I actually go out with (Prince’s) younger sister.”
Duggan — who keeps his premiership medal in his room with a team photo and newspaper article — captained Western Jets this year and led St Pat’s College to its fifth-straight Herald Sun shield.
An AFL recruiter noted he was among the most impressive interviewees seen, with clubs believing he is the safest selection in this year’s pool.

I'm of the same view. Duggan is a solid prospect and I won't be disappointed if we select him.

I suspect both Weller & Wright have expressed a desire to stay in Victoria, it would seem to be the reason we are having this discussion. Collingwood are unlikely to grab Wright given they have Moore, Witts, Grundy & Cloke, they have also been linked to De Goey & Laverde. Geelong may take him but then again, they need a KP back & some speed, West Coast seem locked onto Pickett or Cockatoo and probably prefer a guy who won't get homesick. All this leads me to believe we'll have a shot at either Wright or Weller, a perfect scenario given our list status.

He's not a bad option but does he represent something we really need? His agility & speed is inferior to Weller, everything else is about on par, aside from Duggan's superior defensive pressure. At the moment we are crying out for a bit of dash and class, I think Weller has that in spades. I won't be crying a river over recruiting Duggan but I will be left wondering where & when we'll be getting another speedster.
