Pick 12 discussion.

You may as well forget about him in that scenario, Wright is also significantly faster than both Ellis & Duggan, tall athletic types like this don't fall off trees. His scope is huge.

Don't we already have one of these on our list......Hamp something?

Reading between the lines on the AFL website our preferences are Duggan, Weller & Ellis in that order, but it does suggest we'll take Wright if available (which I doubt).

I am a huge advocate of drafting midfielders in the first round
I say ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS do it!!!

And I've been kept pretty happy

Deledio
Oakley Nicholls
Riewoldt
Cotchin
Vickery
Martin
Conca
Ellis
Vlastuin
Lennon

But I'm consistently reading about the evenness and depth of mids in this draft, after the first few standouts.
Pick 12 isn't that early. The difference between a mid at pick 12 and pick 30 might not be that great.
So if we can get a top 6 ruckman/key fwd player at 12 and still get mids later, then I have to say

It's time to call peter Wright if he is available at our turn.

Does anyone know if Goddard is a chance to be drafted by us at 12 ?

Understand he is a leader and good citizen, so fits from that perspective, and if he is best available big man at 12 ?

I believe big men have more currency and it could put us in good position to trade one of our bigs out next year for low pick(s).

Anyone seriously think that the Cats would let Wright go if he's that good? We are no chance.
My thoughts as well, time will tell I suppose, sounds like we should get at least one good one anway

My bet is Ellis...

I am sure GCS will take Wright, Geelong or West Coast will take Weller and Duggan, which leaves Ellis for us.

Personally believe Cocky is a better choice, but (I hope I am wrong here) FJ & co seem to be adverse to drafting indigenous players. Does anyone else get that feeling?

Ellis for us...

No love for Miller at 33?

Love him, reckon he'll be gone by then though. Tough, ball winner, solid kick, great leadership potential.

Just heard from a Dees mate of mine in the know, that they're heavily into De Goey at 3. Roos wants to keep stock piling mids like they did with Tyson and Salem last year. They wanted to trade 3 for another young mid, but there were no takers.

Would prefer speed if we can get it, but if McKenzie or Menadue are off the board then Miller would be a good get.

Couldn't agree more, we need gamebreakers in our side, if we don't recruit speed then we may as well get the 203cm giant who can kick like Dean Cox and will monster 99% of the defenders playing today.

He barely monstered players in the TAC cup. He only had 10 contested marks across the entire season in the TAC. That's a massive knock on him that he is a big bloke but he doesn't know how to use his size. He relies on his athleticism to beat opponents and isn't physical around the ground with tackling being another big weakness.

These stats say he took 23 contested marks from 13 games? http://www.foxsportspulse.com/team_info.cgi?action=PSTATS&pID=196134360&client=1-118-10470-294691-20320230

...plus 68 uncontested marks equalling 91 marks /13 = 7 marks a game.

Jay Clark and Sam Landsberger have put up their top 20:

1. Petracca
2. Brayshaw
3. McCartin
4. De Doey
5. Laverde
6. Goddard
7. Pickett
8. Langford
9. Moore
10. Lever
11. Ahern
12. Duggan
13. Durdin
14. Wright
15. Garlett
16. Cockatoo
17. Weller
18. Heeney
19. Marchbank
20. Lamb

This makes it seem like we'll have more than just a couple of choices at pick 12, from what I can gather ... ?

That was written on the 3rd August. He played 4 more games after this was written (for an extra 13 CM)

Looking at vids out of Duggan, Weller and Ellis, have to say if it's outside run we want then Duggan and Weller looked streets ahead of Ellis. Obviously the recruiters will know a lot better but Ellis looked a bit slow and more of a target player than a carry and run. Duggan and Weller both look great.

I feel our immediate needs are midfield and improved skills across the ground. Assuming we pick the right one at 12, I am comfortable picking up 4 midfielders/"smalls" in this draft.

Caveat: I have no idea of the drafters other than the few highlight videos.

As far as Wright is concerned, the game that impressed me most was his performance against eventual champions SA. He was BOG and showcased all his abilities.

10 kicks, 6 handballs, 3 goals, 4 tackles, 29 hit outs.

He has one of the best upsides in the draft and contrary to the doomsdayers, his floor would be a solid first ruck, probably worth a late first rounder early second rounder. With Maric on his last legs it would make perfect sense to lock in a tall like Wright, we'd be set for nearly a decade.

Compared to Boyd, Cameron, Patton - how far is Wright off those first picks ?

The furthest he'll drift is pick 13, Freo would love a guy to come in a replace Sandi.

Its getting interesting re Wright. Hun has Essendon at pick 17(?) as a possibility!
