Pick 12 discussion.

Wright's kicking is elite. He would be the best kick for goal we have had since the big O (donut man Ottens). Can't see him getting to 12, however, if he does then it will be champange all round.
Thats assuming we pick him.

One thing that's certain is talls like Peter Wright don't come around too often, we baulked at Grundy and that to me was a mistake, particularly given we were scrounging around for a ruckman last year and had to settled for our third preference. Peter Wright has the potential to be a major weapon, for starters he would be the tallest CHF in the league by quite some margin. At 203cm he could also be the perfect foil for Maric, at least until he builds up and assumes number one ruck duties himself.

Midway through the year he was being talked up as the number 1 pick, this was coming on the back of some monumental performances in the TAC. Against the Eastern Ranges he had 19 touches, 8 contested marks and kicked 10 goals, 1 behind. Two weeks later against NT he had 21 touches, kicked 7.5 and took 6 contested marks. The next week another 19 possessions, 7 contested marks and 7 goals.

Do I believe he can hold down CHF? I give him a 60/40 chance of succeeding, his one on one ability isn't as impressive as say McCartin but his style is also completely different. Much like Vickery he outstretches his opponents instead of out muscling them, as he gains strength he may even develop an extra string to his bow, this will make him a nightmare match-up. The beauty with Wright is he can also play in the ruck, I prefer him as a forward but then again I preferred Ottens as a forward too. Things can change pretty quickly in football and players can adapt to the circumstances.

Wright's stocks cannot dip below a top 20 pick IMO, if he struggles at CHF then he will be an able ruckman who will demand a first round pick in the event he gets traded. He would also provide some leverage if we decide to cut Vickery loose, I say it would be too good an opportunity to pass up.

I agree if available we should take Wright and think we will, but if you think taking Grundy at 9 over Vlaustin would have been the better choice, then I am not so sure I trust your judgement.

Kicks em from everywhere on his AFL highlight video.

As a comparison

Ahern 5M 1.13 10M 1.82 20M 3.02 Agility 7.92 Beep 14 6
Ellis 5M 1.18 10M 1.91 20M 3.15 Agility 8.21 Beep 14 1

Thought Ahern would be quicker than that, had his pace talked up by all and sundry this year. His repeat sprint is probably a better indication though.

I'm really hoping Ahern slides to us if not Wright or Weller.

His agility is great though, sometimes this creates the illusion of pace.

True. How do you rate him against the other pick 12 candidates?

Our list was screaming out for a young ruck. Grundy was touted as top 3 all year. He fell for no good reason, I still don't understand why we didn't go for him. I'm with Bully, I would have taken Grundy ahead of Vlaustin. Said at the time, say it now. Not unhappy with Vlas and he'll play 200 games but I would've taken BG. And we would be silly to pass on Wright.

Yeah, he's action doesn't change. Almost on par with Griffiths. Maybe not on length but on accuracy I think he is better.

Very highly, would take him ahead of Duggan.

Same, I'd even consider taking him ahead of Weller. I'd almost written him out of calculations for our pick assuming he'd be gone but with GWS rumoured be taking Pickett instead he's not out of the question.

Hey Bully Cockatoo, Wright and Ahern all available. Who do you pick and why

Wright definitely gets the gig, talls like this come around once every 4 years, structurally he also slots into our side given he's more of a forward than ruckman.

Pleased to see that Bully. Sound judgement. Also gives me more faith in your Cockatoo love.

2014 AFL Mock Draft 3.0

Brett Anderson | 06 Nov 2014

The 2014 AFL draft is now under a month away. Below is my latest projection of how the draft will play out. As a reminder, this mock draft is not a direct representation of how I rank the prospects in this draft but instead an examination of which prospects I think will land at each club/draft spot
.1. ST KILDA – Christian Petracca | Eastern RangesIt’s a line-ball call but the Saints opt for the powerful midfielder in the hope that he can form a dynamic unit with Dunstan, Steven and Billings. In the mix: Patrick McCartin

2. MELBOURNE – Angus Brayshaw | Sandringham DragonsMelbourne coach Paul Roos is an unabashed fan of the Dragons’ ball magnet and he fits the bill perfectly as a big-bodied inside midfielder. In the mix: N/A

3. MELBOURNE – Patrick McCartin | Geelong FalconsStill in the mix for No.1, but shouldn’t fall any further than here. Teamed with Jesse Hogan, they’d form a formidable forward pairing for a decade. In the mix: Jake Lever

4. GWS GIANTS – Jayden Laverde | Western JetsIf GWS wants the dynamic Jets’ utility, they will need to nab him before the Magpies pounce with the following pick. In the mix: Jake Lever

5. COLLINGWOOD – Jordan De Goey | Oakleigh ChargersThe Pies could go any number of ways but after drafting some smaller types in recent years, De Goey’s bigger frame would be a decided asset. In the mix: Paul Ahern, Lachie Weller

6. GWS GIANTS – Jake Lever | Calder CannonsDespite missing the entire year, Lever’s stocks are still very high. He could go as high as No.3 but is a great fit as an intercept defender. In the mix: N/A

7. GWS GIANTS – Hugh Goddard | Geelong FalconsMany see Goddard as a late first-round pick, but GWS has done a mountain of work on him and can’t afford to hope he falls to its next pick at No.23. In the mix: Jarrod Pickett, Paul Ahern

8. GOLD COAST – Jarrod Pickett | South FremantleThe Suns aren’t far away from announcing themselves as genuine contenders and Pickett’s run and creativity would be a great addition. In the mix: Kyle Langford, Lachie Weller

9. COLLINGWOOD (F/S) – Darcy Moore | Oakleigh ChargersAs much as they tried to play it down, Moore was never going to be overlooked by the Magpies and is a potential star at either end of the ground. In the mix: N/A

10. GEELONG – Peter Wright | Calder CannonsThe Cats traded up from No.14 late in the trade period to improve their hopes of nabbing a player who falls down the order. Despite an abundance of talls – each with injury concerns, Wright could be that player. In the mix: Jordan De Goey, Liam Duggan

11. WEST COAST – Lachie Weller | SouthportThe Eagles have been crying out for some outside class and Weller provides that in spades – at both half forward and in the midfield. In the mix: Connor Blakely, Jarrod Pickett, Nakia Cockatoo

12. RICHMOND – Liam Duggan | Western JetsThe Tigers could be spoilt for choice with the majority of their target all still available. In the end the classy Western Jet is their pick. In the mix: Lachie Weller, Nakia Cockatoo

13. FREMANTLE – Sam Durdin | West AdelaideDurdin was rated as a top three pick early in the year and is great value for a team needing to replenish its key position stocks. In the mix: Hugh Goddard

14. ADELAIDE – Brayden Maynard | Sandringham DragonsPossibly a slight reach, but after just missing Maynard as a father-son, they take the punt and not risk waiting to their second round selection. In the mix: Sam Durdin, Caleb Marchbank

15. GOLD COAST – Kyle Langford | Northern KnightsThe needs of other clubs see Langford – a target at No.8, still being available at the Suns next selection. An easy choice for Scott Clayton! In the mix: Nakia Cockatoo, Jarrod Garlett

16. NORTH MELBOURNE – Nakia Cockatoo | NT ThunderCockatoo spent a week at North as part of the AIS AFL Academy and they loved what they saw. If his foot is OK, this pick will prove to be a steal. In the mix: Paul Ahern, Jarrod Garlett

17. ESSENDON – Paul Ahern | Calder CannonsAhern’s best is as good as any, but his inconsistency sees him drop into the grateful hands of the Bombers. A nice surprise for Adrian Dodoro and co. In the mix: Jarrod Garlett, Tom Lamb

18. SYDNEY SWANS (A/S) – Isaac Heeney | CardiffSome have Heeney as the best midfielder in the draft, so for the Swans to land him at No.18 is bordering on criminal – just ask Ed!In the mix: N/A

19. CARLTON – Caleb Marchbank | Murray BushrangersThe Blues will either go tall or for a running flanker. For now, Marchbank is the better prospect and will settle nicely into the Carlton defence. In the mix: Jarrod Garlett

20. ESSENDON – Tom Lamb | Dandenong StingraysLike Ahern, Lamb’s best is top shelf, but he has been flipped all over the field and the Bombers will hope settling into one position will allow him to flourish. In the mix: Jarrod Garlett, Corey Ellis

21. ST KILDA – Corey Ellis | Western Jets
22. ST KILDA – Reece McKenzie | Northern Knights
23. GWS GIANTS – Jarrod Garlett | South Fremantle

26. WESTERN BULLDOGS – Connor Blakely | Swan Districts
27. WESTERN BULLDOGS – Oscar McDonald | North Ballarat Rebels

Draft order correct as of November 3, 2014

No Bampton or Caleb Daniel, I would be shocked if Port overlooked these two, particularly with so many late picks.

Is he related to my original boyhood hero wearing no.2 for Richmond, Roy?

Don't think so, the more I watch him the more he reminds me of Daniel Jackson, although his disposal efficiency was 85% in the SANFL, something which Jacko struggled to achieve over his whole career. If he was available at 52 we would be mad not to consider him.

I was talking about Peter Wright.

I was in a Coterie with Roy's son in the mid 2000s , pretty sure he wouldn't have son of drafting age

On the little sneak peak I had of Duggqn looks a solid foot soldier with a nice boot, however I wouldn't get excited by him at 12 even if he dos the lawns and edging
