Pick 12 discussion.

Have any of the papers or websites done any draft previews? Am finding it hard this year to get information on the likely draftees.

SEN had their draft bloke in QLD saying the late news is WCE looking at Lennon for #11. We could have Sheeds on our lap

If that happens, hope that Brisbane take Sheed @ 7, Pies take Salem at 9 and we end up with Aish.

Love it Leysy. Knackers on the line. Let's do this.

Under - Think these guys will usurp plenty of guys taken before them.

1) Dom Sheed - Staggered why gets to 11. Would be my first picked after 5. Maybe even at 5.
2) Matt Crouch - Wins the football, uses it well. Won't win games himself but neither does Sam Mitchell.
3) James Aish- Classic second year player at the champs who gets picked apart.
4) Billy Hartung- Buzzsaw with class.
5) Dayle Garlett- Someone will take the punt.
6) Mitch Honeychurch- Footballer. Hard small man.
Overrated - & chances to bust ISO

1) Lewis Taylor- Reckon he got feed at Geelong. Lot of one, twos. Not a great two way footballer.
2) Jonathon Marsh - Overhyped to the hilt.
3)Kade Kolodjashnij - Think he will be a solid AFL footballer but I would take a few ahead of him. More suited to 10-15 for me.
4) Patrick Cripps - If Carlton take him at 13, I think it's a reach. Would take McCarthy. Screaming for a key forward.

Yeah, about that….

Your boy is very good Bully.

We need to pick up Lewis Taylor, the age says "zippy, zig zagging midfielder'
The club needs a zip ;D

;D

Zip might have had an idea after all.

Rising Star Award is a fantastic start, glad he landed at a rebuilding club and has been given the opportunity to show his wares. Reckon he might be doing the midget class a massive favour by taking out this award, I really hope FJ & Hardwick take notice, it would be an understatement to say we need a genuine rover.

But I did have my howler, rated Scharenberg well ahead of Bontempelli and that looks to be off the mark at this early stage. Can't do too much about injury though, still think Scharenberg will be a gun when given the opportunity, saw him as a great Bob Murphy replacement and couldn't believe the Dogs overlooked him. Could this be the moment the Dogs overcome their bigman hoodoo? I think so, Bontempelli has some real nous, dare I say it but James Hird like nous. Let's just hope he doesn't go down the path of his predecessors.

1. Lewis Taylor - seems to be beaten from pillar to post lately and has been a magnet for criticism, most of which I deem to be unfair. 'Too short', yet he's only 2 cm shorter than Hartung, 'Too slow', can't quite work that one out, 'Runs around like a headless chook and gets teammates into trouble', could easily be replaced with 'takes the game on, breaks lines and provides some x-factor'. Richmond supporters clearly don't like small players, maybe a by-product of FJ's template for success, but this one will come back to bite some on the backside. You don't win TAC player of the year, captain the Falcons & Vic Country, win AA honours & receive glowing endorsements from Kevin Sheehan and Emma Quayle if you're a dud.

Busts.

1. Bontempelli - wrong choice Doggies, with Aish & Scharenberg up for grabs you'll be regretting this one like you have with all your reaches over the past 10 years or so. He may well become servicable but with the elite talent up for grabs this one has me scratching my head.

1-1 draw. I reckon if Bont played all 22 games, he definitely would've won the Rising Star. I can't see anything special with Taylor. How many more RS awards do Brisbane players need to win? It's as bad as Dogs and Swans continuously winning Brownlows.

may not have won the award but Bontempelli is the Rising Star IMO.

Kid is a superstar.

Yep, and goal of the year. Brilliant and all creative.

Seems I have sold Bonts well short, but I still rate Aish & Scharenberg very highly. And I wouldn't be downplaying Taylor's achievement, particularly given he was a second round pick, reckon most recruiters now have egg on their face.

As for my other predictions -

2. James Aish - harshly judged by most in the media, don't know why to be honest. He's been the number 1 target of taggers for most of the year, yet still managed AA honours and an astonishing 84% disposal efficiency. Classy, perfect height, superb agility, the next Dal Santo.

Fantastic first season and will only get better once he bulks up.

3. Scharenberg - I have him ranked number 2 in this draft behind Boyd, if Collingwood nab him then Shaw won't be missed. A backline general and a future leader of the club. Hine will have a tough choice with Aish also up for grabs, but Scharenberg is just too good to pass up.

Unlucky with injury but would be my early favourite for next year's award.

2. Crouch - if he goes in the second round, then I retract my comments, I just can't see him vindicating a first round selection. Poor running and jumping indicates there will be an element of plodder about Crouch. He will probably play 100+ games but won't be a superstar.

12 months later and I haven't changed my opinion, 2nd round was also spot on.

3. Sheed - this will raise some eyebrows because he is currently the internet darling at the moment, but whilst I think he'll be a good player, top 5 he is not. His kicking is ok but a little bit loopy and one-sided, he simply doesn't tackle, his WAFL senior form has seen him become predominantly an outside mid and his agility testing was very poor. First round, definitely, but there will be many who outperform him over the journey.

Again, I reckon I nailed this one, has been ok but nothing that would vindicate a top ten pick.

While we're pumping our own tyres, there is a post of mine in here somewhere, posted about June last year, that simply reads:

Bontempelli Bontempelli Bontempelli

I rest my case.

Bullus, how do you feel now about our pick in Ben Lennon, given what came after? i.e your man Taylor et al.
He looks a little immature physically and mentally and as such will take a little longer; but will he be the skilled link player as hoped?

He was always going to be a slow starter, his draft camp results indicated a work in progress. As far as meeting expectations is concerned, I think he's done reasonably well at VFL level and seems to be doing all the stuff that Hardwick is insisting upon. Not overly concerned at this stage, I think we always knew he wouldn't burst onto the scene like our other recent draftees. Although highly unlikely, I wouldn't mind seeing him get a brief taste of finals footy, might be just the tonic to get him completely focused.
