Pick 12 discussion.

Obviously would not have been fantastic. HOWEVER at least it's a result that would be consistent over all clubs and free agents. The system as it is doesn't work. How does Daisy Thomas, who has hardly played for 2 years get you a pick 11 when Buddy gets pick 19?

We lost Matt White for nothing but Port got a 2nd rounder for Danyle Pearce. None of it makes any sense and all it does is disadvantage clubs through compromising the draft yet again.
We got nothing for White because Port paid peanuts for him. Where as Freo paid Pearce a small fortune.

The flaw in the system is the fact it's attached to where you finish on the ladder. The first level should be an end of first rounder. Doesn't affect anyone's first rounder that way. Then have a mid 2nd rounder (after non-finalists) so all teams are picking at the same point. And so on

1. End of First (After all teams pick)
2. Mid Second (After non-finalists)
3. End of Second (After all teams)
4. Mid THird (After non-finalists)
5. End of Third (For any spuds like White etc that don't get much)

A mate of mine bought a Jeep. (you dont have to say "he bought a jeep?"). after about 50K, it was completely stuffed. He found a dealership, he didnt care which flavour, it just had to be at the bottom of a long hill. He rolled the Jeep into the dealership and said "I need a ute, fast". They gave him $20K trade on his totally stuffed (motor, gearbox, stuffed) Jeep, he gave them $10K and drove out in a Navara as quick as he could. They actually chased him back up the hill, but of course the Navara had way too much torque.

This story reminds me of Collingwood and Daisy Thomas. I just hope they get a new freeman and not a new lennon in the trade.

I think we should take Jones. Looks a 200 game player to me.

However Lennon must be very tempting given we lack a bit of X Factor. Possibly higher risk but would bring something we need if it works.

I'm hoping for Jones as well.

A better comparision for that would be Adelaide getting nothing for losing Chris Knights. So we very rightly got nothing for Matt White. Anyone who thought we should have gotten something for White was delusional. Pearce is a much better player then White and Pearce was also a restricted free agent. White was unrestricted like Knights was.

In regards to Thomas getting the Pies a better pick then Franklin, it's the best way a compensation system in the AFL will work. You can't just decide who's a better player and which player deserves a better pick for their respective club as it will get far messier then it already is.

I'm only going on the AFL highlights but a lot of Jones' kicks missed the target. Is he better than that? And why is Freeman knocked so much? His kicks seemed to hit their targets and he seemed to be the player others gave the ball to rather than kick it themselves.

Lennon's athleticism worries me. He's a nice mark but he'll get a few fists in the ear at AFL level.

In Frank we trust.

Booms

1. Lewis Taylor - seems to be beaten from pillar to post lately and has been a magnet for criticism, most of which I deem to be unfair. 'Too short', yet he's only 2 cm shorter than Hartung, 'Too slow', can't quite work that one out, 'Runs around like a headless chook and gets teammates into trouble', could easily be replaced with 'takes the game on, breaks lines and provides some x-factor'. Richmond supporters clearly don't like small players, maybe a by-product of FJ's template for success, but this one will come back to bite some on the backside. You don't win TAC player of the year, captain the Falcons & Vic Country, win AA honours & receive glowing endorsements from Kevin Sheehan and Emma Quayle if you're a dud.

2. James Aish - harshly judged by most in the media, don't know why to be honest. He's been the number 1 target of taggers for most of the year, yet still managed AA honours and an astonishing 84% disposal efficiency. Classy, perfect height, superb agility, the next Dal Santo.

3. Scharenberg - I have him ranked number 2 in this draft behind Boyd, if Collingwood nab him then Shaw won't be missed. A backline general and a future leader of the club. Hine will have a tough choice with Aish also up for grabs, but Scharenberg is just too good to pass up.

Busts.

1. Bontempelli - wrong choice Doggies, with Aish & Scharenberg up for grabs you'll be regretting this one like you have with all your reaches over the past 10 years or so. He may well become servicable but with the elite talent up for grabs this one has me scratching my head.

2. Crouch - if he goes in the second round, then I retract my comments, I just can't see him vindicating a first round selection. Poor running and jumping indicates there will be an element of plodder about Crouch. He will probably play 100+ games but won't be a superstar.

3. Sheed - this will raise some eyebrows because he is currently the internet darling at the moment, but whilst I think he'll be a good player, top 5 he is not. His kicking is ok but a little bit loopy and one-sided, he simply doesn't tackle, his WAFL senior form has seen him become predominantly an outside mid and his agility testing was very poor. First round, definitely, but there will be many who outperform him over the journey.

Therein lies the conundrum oldy. I think its the right time to do a little boldness, and lennon seems the logical bloke to do it on. The selection will tell us something I reckon. If we take Lennon, I will interpret it as The sponge is cooked, time to start mixing the passionfruit icing. If we take Jones, then I'll be thinking the sponge is still rising, which is OK too.

Im more inclined toward icing time, but patience has never been my strong suit.

I hope Francis & co underwhelm me again with a stodgy, uninspiring type tonight; a dependable soldier, no doubt, but one-paced, with little or no upside. As next year unfolds I'll be more and more impressed by his offensive flair and ability to get hold of the footy and do something good with it. I'll start to think his pace isn't an issue. I'll hope the club develops him as a future leader. And I'll be willing to bet anything that the kid will build himself into a beast of an AFL footballer.

So bring me vanilla with meh sprinkles, and let me discover the chocolatey goodness myself. I'm running out of metaphors here, and frankly I'm uncomfortable with licking footballers as an image, so I'll put it simply, Mr Jackson;

Bring me Nandon Ellstuin.

I really like Acres as well. If Salem and Lennon are gone I'd love to see us get him, but seems it will be Jones. Bit blue-collar when we're crying out for caviar but you can never have enough lunatic hard nuts who can run.

I'd prefer a Brick Vlaullis myself.

purely based on the highlights on the AFL website, reckon freeman will be a beauty. Alot of Luke Shuey about him. Also a much better version of White. Like the way he runs past and around opponents with ease. His combine results were also very impressive - speed and endurance. He may have weaknesses which are not visible in the clips perhaps (runs into trouble and panics ??), dunno - haven't seen him enough, i'll take the word from those that have. However, his attributes - pace, explosiveness, urgency, speed etc. are what our midfield lacks. we are a bit one paced and static. wouldn't be upset if we pick him at all.

Yep, that was the very obvious way to go from the start.
Yet the highly paid geniuses (geniuii?) at head office need to justify their salaries and come up with much more clever and complex solutions.
Hence Buddy on 9 year contract worth $15m is worth pick 19 and Daisy Crock-ette is worth pick 11 and a dead set gift to *smile*'s mate Eddie.
This is a totally flawed (that's not the f word i first thought of) system which should not survive the first cursory review by new football head Mark Evans.
Chalk another flop (f word, refer above) down to head poo-bah *smile*.
Who by the way is currently campaigning hard for another term in office, after all the disasters he has presided over (tanking, drugs, you name it).
Unbelieveable.

Agree regarding Acres...looks class.

Jones looks to have shat skills tbh. I also always worry about a bloke who has had to work really hard to get up to VIC Country/Tac Cup level. We need some class we have the work horses imo.

Looking like it'll be either Jones or Lennon depending what WCE do. They take Sheed, Johnny's all ours

I join the bandwagon on this.
